How to let people know where you're registered

If you don't have a wedding website or blog and are not having an engagement party (we've been engaged forever), how do you let people know where you're registered? Is it proper to send an e-mail?

No, wait for people to ask.  You can let people close to you know (i.e. your mom, best friend, other people that a guest might ask where you're registered).  Most people also know to check the common stores in the area or Google it.
  • I out the info on our wedding website and let people know what the website was on our reply cards with our invitations.
  • Most people will use google to check all of the common registry stores.  Try it yourself and see if your registries come up.

People who aren't internet-savvy might ask you, or your family/WP.  If asked, then you can tell them where you are registered:-)

  • You only tell people where you are registered when they ask.  Otherwise, keep your mouth closed.  Before internet, this was the way to properly handle registry information and now with Google/store websites it's even less necessary to ask anyone directly.  So much information is available on the internet.
  • If you are having a shower, you can let people know on your shower invites, but you cannot put the information on the wedding invites.

I totally didn't realize it was "allowed" to be on the shower invitation and I got nervous when I saw that it was!

Me too! Our first shower that we had I was mortified that it was on there! And then I wisened up.
  • Wait until you are asked, then you can tell them.  Younger people or those internet savvy will google it first, older guests will do what they've always done and ask you or your family.

It's ok to put it on your shower invitations if you have one, too.
  • I'm fairly Internet savvy myself, but I don't understand how people will know to Google: Jones/Smith wedding 2012 registry?

Just google "bridefirstname bridelastname groomfirstname groomlastname."  I guarantee you every registry you have will come up.
  • As a general rule of thumb, it is not ok to start a conversation with anyone about getting you a gift.  You don't tell people what you want for Christmas/Birthday without being asked, and the same goes for weddings.  If people can't find it on their own (and they can) they will ask.

Honestly, if you don't think people will know to google Jane Smith registry, then you really aren't internet savvy.
  • Maybe do a simple website?  I didn't really plan on having one, but once I started putting it together I was having such fun I did more than I intended.  Our registry into is on the site, albeit discretly.  And contact info for me, my fiance, my parents (who are hosting the wedding) and my FSIL who is hosing the reception are also on the site.  I think it will be helpful.
