bat found in salad bag

So I *do* get my salad bags from walmart.  I don't think I ever bought the spring mix.  And I don't live in FL.  My coworker told me this, and my first reaction (before reading the article) was this:

Re: bat found in salad bag

  • I guess my question is, "When they opened the bag, didn't they think the smell was a little... off?"  Because I'm sure any "creature in a “deteriorated condition,”" would smell... kinda funky.

"And when they use our atoms to make new lives, they won’t just be able to take one, they’ll have to take two, one of you and one of me..."

  • That - yes, and when I buy the salad bags, I usually throw it in a big bowl and toss everything together, so hopefully, I'd SEE the bat if there was no weird scent to give it away.

  • I was also wondering why they didn't notice the bag of salad had a bit more heft to it than it should have for just a bag of lettuce...

Also totally creeped me out that "The deteriorated condition of the bat did not allow for CDC to definitively rule out whether this bat had rabies." (according to the article I read on CNN)
  • What I always wonder when I see these kinds of articles is how does anyone know if this is even real?  It would be easy for someone to throw a dead animal into a bag/box of whatever and claim it had already been there.  Try and get a payout and/or some weird claim to fame.

I am suspicious.  There have been quite a few instances where someone claimed to have found nasty things in food products, and investigation found that it was all faked.
