Recipes

how do you store/print/organize recipes?  I'm getting annoyed with the million sheets of paper in 30 locations or the chicken scratch on the back of a return to school slip (true story that's my cilantro Kim chicken recipe). I'd like to be more organized than my mother, but hate to write!

Re: Recipes

  • I take pics of paper recipes that I want to try and then upload them to Pinterest. Once I make the recipe, I have a "Successful Recipes" board that I move them to and I add comments and notes about what I would change, how much food I made, timing, etc. I do have binders that I have recipes in as well, and I'll print my favorites just to have in one place in case Pinterest goes rogue and deletes every thing. Lastly, I made a Word document and wrote down all my personal and secret family recipes. I uploaded it to google docs and emailed myself a copy because I'm paranoid. Lol. Those are also printed out and in a binder. The binder is separated into breakfast, apps, salads, entrees and desserts. I probably should divvy it up into "poultry" and "beef" or whatever, but I haven't yet.

  • Google is my recipe holder. I google more often than I pull out a book or binder to look for a recipe.  ;) In your case, a binder with clear divider pockets?  Or if you have a tablet, create a recipe file and type (ugh, I know) them all in?
  • A lot of pinterest but I print a lot. If it's good, I save and likely I'll put in a book/binder situation later but I don't bother organizing until I know it's worth it.

Also following this thread to get ideas ;)
  • Oh, I like the picture idea, even if you just keep them on your phone/tablet (I don't do Pinterest...hate it, can't work it. ;) ).  That's much easier.  But I'd still keep the paper copies, and do the binder thing.
  • I have a word doc that I keep. Once I like it enough to keep it, I type it in as the original and then put my changes at the bottom if there are any.  I try not to let more than 3 pile up at a time.
  • I have a bunch of bookmarks to recipes on my phone. For things I have printed out and for recipes I have gotten as hard copies from friends and family members I have a three-ring binder with clear dividers to hold the recipes and tabs to divide the binder into sections (bread, cookies, apps, etc)

curious on your pinterest issue. Maybe I can help! :)
  • I have binders for everything.  I don't print any recipes out until I have tried it at least once and we've decided it's good enough to warrant keeping.  Once I find something, I'll copy and paste it into Word, add whatever tweaks I made (there's ALWAYS a handful), print it out, put it in a sheet protector, and put it into the binder.

I can't keep anything else straight, and trying to use Pinterest for anything more than "Hm, that sounds good," is my NIGHTMARE.

I haven't used it in a long time, but it was not intuitive to me and I found it very confusing.

They've done a lot of updates recently to make it easier. Most recipes you can just tap the image and it says basic info right underneath - anything more detailed you have to follow to the website, but majority of the time it's right there now.
  • I printed the ones I like a lot and I keep them in a binder.

I have a Google Keep list for my Christmas cookie recipes.

What I like about the printed paper is that I don't care if oil splatters on my binder paper but on my phone it's a PITA.
  • There's an ap I've used called Pepperplate. I had to type my recipes in, but I've found it very useful.

I have a lot of recipes on paper but ones friends have sent me are in picture form that I favorite in my iPhone album so they are easily accessible.

I really don't want things on the computer.  I don't want to have to worry about spills or internet outages.  I guess I was hoping for something that would print on a pretty recipe card.

I could probably just format something huh.

I have them printed in a binder although in reality I haven't used them in a while since I rarely bake and a good portion of them were baking. Ok and I rarely cook any more too or it is the same easy thing over and over
  • I tried the recipe cards, but hated them.  They were never as well protected as I wanted them to be, my handwriting is terrible and it was a total PITA for me to write all my recipes out, and I was so unhappy with their durability and longevity that I didn't even want to be bothered with trying to digitally format something.

I prefer hard copies to digital, but technology and I don't really get along well, and I tend to lose all of my digital files about once every 6 months, so it's more that I'm just tired of losing my favorite pumpkin chocolate chip cookie recipe that has now been bookmarked/saved on 5 different devices.  And lost all 5 times.

  • I use an app called Paprika. It has a browser in it so that I can go to websites and clip recipes. I can also manually enter recipes. I really love using it. I've been trying new recipes ever since I started with it. It makes it much easier to find recipes.
  • I'm reading these great ideas on storing recipes.

Then my mind flits to my house.  Where the coffee table has a drawer.  With all the local take-out menus.  Places that offer delivery also...on top!

  • I keep them on Pinterest, taste of home recipe box and in word docs on my computer. I'd really like to get better organized and have them either in a book of some sort or on cards in a recipe box. I like the idea of a binder, but haven't figured out a good organization strategy so the recipes aren't huge (I don't need each one taking up a whole standard sheet of paper) but it's still easy to move stuff around and add more recipes in when I find new ones without throwing the organization off.
  • I use Pinterest and a binder. Pinterest is for ideas. Binder is for things that will happen or have happened.

If I like something once I make it, I take the magazine clipping or print out and format it myself into a word document with my own picture. That is more of an OCD thing. Only tried and re-formatted recipes get into the sections of my binder. I have sections for breakfast, appetizers, soups, salads, mains, pastas, bread/buns, desserts, drinks and other.

If I tried something and hate it, the magazine clipping/print out goes in the garbage. If the recipe needs refining before I make it my own, it goes back into the pocket of the binder.

  • I was just thinking about this the other day.

I use Pinterest for ideas, but probably only one or two have really turned into something I make on a regular basis. A lot of stuff during the week is just off the top of my head.

What I'd really like is a little recipe box with nutritional information; calories and macro ingredients per serving. We don't eat meat, and DH doesn't eat fish, so I'm trying to keep better track of how much protein we have during dinner.
  • MIL gave me a little 4x6 picture album with recipes at my wedding shower. (she sent cards to the guests before the shower and asked them to share a favorite recipe) - i haven't used most of what people gave me (TBH, a lot of it sounded pretty awful, and i know most of those people don't cook...). i still use that little album to stre printed copies of stuff i've found online. my mom printed hers and pasted them on the recipe card that MIL sent, so if i ever get ambitious, i can do that.

i will also add stuff to try to pinterest or save in my e-mail so i can look ingredients up at the grocery store if i decide to make something on a whim.

most of the family recipes are in my head, or are things that i've come up with on my own so, unwritten.
  • Can I also say I hate Pinterest. Maybe I don't get it, but there have been so many times I've wanted to purchase something I liked on there, and getting to the source link is bullshit.

I treat Pinterest as an idea board (minus maybe the recipes because most of the time I find the source directly from Pinterest). But clothes and other stuff? I treat those like inspiration pins. So if I see a really cute outfit I just keep the style in my mind and casually look for pieces when I'm out shopping that will complete the look. I bought one thing from Pinterest and the quality turned out to be poor. So unless it's from j. Crew, Banana, etc I don't try to track down outfits.

I use Pinterest pretty much solely to find new books.  So far, I have been reasonably happy with the suggestions.

Exactly. I've never tried and probably never will to buy something I see on there. Or I'll pin something, like clothes patterns from Joanns, and then actually go and buy them from Joanns.
