You've GOT to be kidding me...

So my venue event coordinator calls my mom today to tell her that they are remodeling and they won't be done in time for the wedding. It went something along the lines of, "Oh by the way, we're remodeling. You knew that right?"

NO ONE has said ANYTHING about a remodel and we've been in constant contact with the venue since we booked!

The best part, they are remodeling our reception ballroom right this very moment. It was supposed to be done already but got delayed but they PROMISE it will be ready by this Saturday, and we are getting married NEXT Saturday. So if it's already delayed what is the guarantee that it won't be further delayed???

When I talked to the lady she assured me it would be done in time for the wedding, and the only thing that WOULDN'T be finished is the lobby and foyer area. So, even if the ballroom is done my guests will still be navigating through construction to get where they need to go.

My mom talked to her first and the lady made it sound like we might have to look at back-up options. The only backup option is a considerably smaller room that I hate. So needless to say I am freaking out a little bit.

But, the lady did sound AWFUL on the phone like she was having the worst day of her life. So that's a little bit of a consolation. She wants to know if there's anything she can do to set my mind at ease. I told her I'd think about it. My mom and I are going to check it out on Monday and see what the damage is/if the room is done. I might have to throw a hissy fit and demand a discount. We'll see...

  • omg this is terrible! well good luck! positive vibes are being sent your way!  Try to be as nice as possible, this will make the lady want to work with you more and do everything she can for you.  save the hissy fit for the very last moment, only if you realy need it...that way it will have a bigger impact lol and try not to stress. if your guests have to walk thru construction in the lobby, that sucks. but once they get into the beautiful ballroom and see the beautiful bride with her new hubby they will forget all about it!

  • DISCOUNT.. go for the discount.  That is just wrong that know one told you about a reno...Good luck, I hope you can work through it and your day is a great one.
  • That's awful! I am sure she is freaking out herself an telling a bride who is getting married this weekend "guess what? you don't have a reception room." How terrible for her, and out of her control. As someone who is in the contruction business, i can understand delays. As a bride, I would be pissed! I would caution against a hissy fit. I would calmly discuss your options and ask for some compensation. I wouldn't demand. I would be less inclined to help someone when they demand something. But I get what you're saying.

    Good luck!
  • I agree ask for a discount, also the ballroom should have emergency exit doors on it, maybe those could be opened and could be the main entrance for guests instead of walking through the lobby? Just make some signs to direct people.

Do you have it in writing where your venue coordinator said that the venue's renovations would be complete? Maybe in an email somewhere? I would take that and your contract to her and demand a refund.

Sorry to hear...I'd definitely ask for a discount!  I'd be pissed if I heard this from my venue weeks before the wedding.

  • Can the reception hall rent dividers? like the kind of temporary ones that subdivide rooms? I think we're using those at the back of the church - our sanctuary is all window at hte back, so I will have no where to hide from FI's eyes without dividers... could you use those to create a "hallway" through the construction so that guests don't see it and have to worry about where they're oging?
