Wednesday

What's up?!

Worked, Dropped the kids at Bible school and went for a run, cleaned the bathrooms, and now I'm sitting here waiting for Max to get dropped off. It's rainy and dreary here.

Soccer got cancelled last night which bummed 6let out.  EXCEPT, we have footskill dvds and all kinds of skills he can practice at home.  He never does it.  I really don't want to harp on him to practice, but I also don't want to drive 20 mins and pay $5 for shit he can do at home but chooses not to.

I come from a music background not sports.  I had weekly lessons, daily band, but I also practiced on my own a ton.  Rarely did my parents have to ask about it.  I go back and forth with

"he needs to want to do it" vs "I'm going to be the tiger mom."

"He's 9" vs "He plays on a pretty darn high level team that costs $$$"

"He's better today than last year" vs "He'd be even better if he put in more effort"

"He's going to be pissed when little sister and brother out play him.  Serves him right"  There is no vs on that one.  It will serve him right.

lol at "no vs on that one" @6fsn...could you maybe engage him to use the dvds?  Make it sound like something fun?  "hey why don't we put on ....." and then put it on?

Darn Omaha Steak sale! On the weekend I went to the shop, signed up for the reward points and spent $90 on food.  Mostly chicken. Then today I get an email about a great "create your own combo" package and realize I should buy some steaks since H loves steaks, and I can't be making stuff only *I* like (but why not?)....so I bought a combo package as well.  I don't even know if i have room in my tiny freezer for all of this! But the prices WERE good!

Yesterday I read that article about the 31 year old man who drowned in Florida, and 4 teens witnessed it (while filming it no less) and taunted him instead of helping.  Anyway, they're not getting charged because there's no law stating you have to help.  WTF is wrong with people? Also, Change that damn law. I literally cried at my desk as I read it just envisioning that.  I can't with people anymore....

  • I LOLed at that last one too, 6. Do your kids have chores and little rewards or anything? Could you make the soccer videos like a chore?

Holy shit, Pam, that's so sad. I cannot even imagine. Also, H and I have a giant stand-up freezer we're looking to get rid of! :)

I have a meeting this afternoon and I really wanted to wear a new shirt I got. Except H ironed and steamed it the other night, and it left a stain where a wet spot dried. So I washed it last night and intended to iron it this morning without steaming. H ironed it, it wasn't getting the wrinkles out so he steamed it again and got big wet mark stains on it again. Cue morning panic of nothing nice enough to wear to a meeting and trying not to be mad at H. I love the shirt and it looks really nice with a pair of skinny pants but FFS I hate how high maintenance it is.

My stepdad, who I haven't spoken to in probably a year or so, tagged my brother and sister and I on facebook. It was a timehop video taken of my niece who was around one at the time meeting my dog. It was right after my mom's diagnosis and he said something like, "the start of a hard time in our lives". I wonder if this is his way of trying to reach out to us for a relationship.

If so, it's like, the worst timing ever because he's a heating and AC guy and my sister and I both replaced our A/C units this month. LOL.

  • I have a bunch of shirts like that @ShesSoCold and I always debate throwing them out because they’re such a PITA. But then I end up buying more of the same type, so I must like it.

    That is so sad/awful@CharmedPam.

I think you’re okay to bug a little @6fsn. Not all kids are self-starters and he might need a little push. I think Tiger Mom status would be forcing him to practice for 3-4 hours every night. I also did piano (for almost 15 years), and while I’m generally pretty good at self-motivating, there were periods of time where my mom had to push me to practice and stick with it, and I’m glad she did.

Another midterm today. Cue panic. Dinner tomorrow with my parents and a lot of homework. I bought a bunch of swimsuits online from Nordstrom and they’ve been slowly arriving. I’m still overweight and there’s nothing I can do about that at the moment, but a lot of them look better than I thought they would, so I’m glad I at least have options for San Diego instead of being desperate to find something.

    That is effed up Pam.

SSCold- High maintenance clothes and I do not mix. I'm curious what it looks like though.

6let is just a kid that wants to get things right the first time.  He doesn't want to get it wrong so he just won't do it.  M2 had no problem failing.  She even wrote a story about going over the monkey bars and not quite getting to the end so she skinner her knew.  She ended the story with "It's ok.  I can try again.  I am strong and will get to the end."  First grade story.

I really don't want to make it a chore.  There will be plenty of times later that something is going to feel like a chore and I don't want to burn the kid out before he hits double digits.

My husband offered $5 for 5 juggles, $10 for 10, and so on.  I'm the only one that's been practicing:)  He's going to really feel like an ass when MOM beats him.

  • Too much cheap wine after dinner...my head hurts!
  • Good luck on your midterm @levloosa!

So....i don't even own an ironing board.  Haven't since I moved out of my house.  I don't buy "dry clean only" tops and thankfully I don't need to wear blouses or shirts for work that can't get unwrinkled in the dryer :)

@6fsn, I'm kinda like 6let....I have like 30+ workout dvd's, and keep buying more....the only one I really liked is turbo jam (the original) but haven't touched it in years.  I would rather sign up for an aerobic class and be with people....and that's saying a lot because I really don't like aerobic classes.

  • Went off on my own for lu ch today. People are really nice but just needed some out of the office time. Today was good. Still learning culture/doing Onboarding stuff, but getting to start some data work this afternoon.

My pay stuff is getting all figured out. The HR guy (who was kind of mansplain-y to me during negotiations made the mistake and I feel a little bit good that he had to apologize to me.
  • @CharmedPam, I hate to say it, but I doubt I would have helped a drowning man either.  And I would have tackled my H if he tried to jump in and save that person.  Unless you're a strong swimmer yourself, you'll get in big trouble and potentially drown also trying to save someone else in an ocean situation.

HOWEVER, I obviously wouldn't have been laughing and taunting like a sick psychopath.  I'd be frantically dialing the Coast Guard, 911...running down the beach to kid with a floatie/big blow up toy...whatever I could think of to try and help.  But without putting myself in a lot of danger.

I read a sad story where a guy jumped in the ocean to help his dog, who looked like he was in trouble.  The dog eventually made it back to shore okay.  But his owner drowned trying to save him.  The moral of the story was "don't swim out to help your dog".  Because dogs are substantially better swimmers with better endurance than most humans.

It fostered a discussion between my H and I.  While that makes absolutely perfect and logical sense, would we be able to stand idly by if our Izzy was being swept out to sea?  Our little fur girl who loves us and trusts us implicitly to keep her safe.  We couldn't do it y'all.  We'd have to at least try.  Even if it is a poor and possibly fatal decision.

Okay...moving on to other subjects...sorry its long...

My effing, effing car.  It broke down again on Monday.  Third time in less than one month!  I don't even know what to do.  Technically, the "grace period" of my after market warranty is up on July 6th.  But I almost feel like I need to wait longer than that.  They have a thousand pieces of fine print that give them loopholes, to deny claims and/or make me jump through a lot of hoops.  And I just don't want them to give me a hard time if I'm contractually in the timeframe, but they don't like how soon it is.

At this point, my H and I are wondering if it is a problem with the main computer or an electrical problem.  Because it's like the car has "lost its mind".  Even my mechanic said that various warning lights are coming off and on.   But "he's checked everything and everything is fine".

My H and had been toying with the idea for a long time to buy a second vehicle.  Like a truck or van we can use in our real estate endeavors.  We've found a few contenders.  One of them is a 2013 Ford van with only 23K miles for $3500.  I put my H "on the hunt" to find out this particular year/make/model's reliability.  It is so utilitarian and blah looking.  But at least it would give me some wheels to give a longer wait to my extended warranty and is a great value for the price/year/mileage.

Technically, I am fortunate to fairly easily be able to take the bus to work.  And that is what I have been doing.  But I have to wake up 30 minutes earlier.  My bus stop and workplace are .4 miles apart.  And that's each way morning and evening.  In 90+ heat and high humidity.  I could do it if I have to, but I'm feeling despondent at the thought of doing it for weeks.

    And a little more stress...

I was introduced to a new employee in Doc Control this morning.  It kind of made me feel bad.  I'm supposed to be helping with DC, so I felt a little bit like it was saying I wasn't doing a good enough job helping them.  Maybe it's just me.  Maybe no one feels that way.  Nobody has necessarily said anything like that, though I know the DC manager...who is the coworker I don't care for...has been a little frustrated at times in how slow I'm finishing "this or that" task.  But DC isn't my core job.  Though I know I could have been more efficient with things.

Quite frankly, I don't even know what they need help with.  For the most part, I was keeping up with everything they needed.  The leftovers are not a full-time job.  But, whatever.

Plus, it was a little more job security.  Which is always a concern in this place!

On the plus side, I don't like a lot of the work in DC.  So it is also nice to no longer worry about it.

Pam, I've actually never ironed in my life. H's grandma totally judges me. Generally I iron by throwing it in the dryer with a handful of ice cubes. Years ago when I was watching a ton of QVC I got this bug up my ass and bought like a $90 iron. H has used it like maybe 4 times and I've never touched it. The ironing board came with the house, thankfully. This morning I was thinking that it can't be that hard, but apparently it is! LOL

I never heard of ice cubes, but it's brilliant!  I was ironing curtains one day.  The kids were very confused about why I was using "Daddy's iron."  DH used to iron daily- even t-shirts on our honeymoon!  Now he wears a uniform and it's awesome.  They clean and press everything.

I am horrible like this also.  Workout videos and self-help books.

It's like some illogical tiny part of me actually thinks if I buy enough "easy and effective" workout videos,  I'll magically start losing weight and getting in better shape by osmosis.

Very true.  It would depend on the safety level.  the article I read said "pond near his family's home in Cocoa".  Now, coming from Illinois, I probably would have jumped into a pond....but I know in Florida, you'd have to worry about gators and other water creatures.  I was more disgusted about them NOT calling for help, and making fun of the  whole situation, but I don't know....I may have tried depending on how deep he was in it.

I'm so sorry about your car! That sucks and public transportation is great and all, but yeah sounds inconvenient.  :(

  • @short+sassy omg. Your car. I would want to roll it off a bridge at this point.

Today was kind of a waste, I just couldn’t get going. The dressers were delivered though and look great. They look bigger in our house than in the store but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I think DH is a little envious, lol.
We went out with our friend tonight since my class was cancelled. She wants to watch the dog when we go out of town. We are going to let her but I hope it works out okay.
DH and I were able to talk a little about his mom and we quickly agreed we are on the same page. He assured me that he is happy with how we are doing things, which is all I care about.
  • Ugh Justice Kennedy whyyyyyy. I mean, because old, but still.
@starmoon44 - we are in serious trouble.

I hope people get their IUD's soon.
  • Most days I feel like I'm living a bad dream, hoping to wake up and I can't.  Damn Kennedy.  Mueller better hurry the hell up.  We are already the laughing stock of the world, our closest allies don't trust us anymore, we are locking up children away from their parents and soon we will all be speaking Russian.  I'm just waiting for another world leader to say that we are apart of the Axis of Evil.  Oh and the looks of a recession are coming.

Other than that, I'm doing good!  Work is keeping me busy.  I had a business lunch with a new vendor, so that was a nice bonus for today.  Yoga after work today.

  • Ugh Justice Kennedy whyyyyyy. I mean, because old, but still.

It is like my worst nightmare.  I was hoping to just make it through the Trump nightmare and that this would "all be over" in another few years and we could start repairing the damage.  But a Supreme Court Justice allows a POTUS to put his lean on our laws for years to come.  Now I'm waiting for his first choice to be some personal injury attorney that has commercials on all the time while Trump watches his daytime soaps.  (Disclaimer:  I'm joking.  At least I hope.  And I have no idea if Trump watches daytime soaps.)

Yeaahhh.  I was just reading an article about his retirement with an overview of the role he plays on SCOTUS.

A conservative, but a moderate one.  Was usually true to his conservative leanings on cases regarding business.  But was more liberal on social issues.

He was appointed by Reagan, whose first choice was a more conservative justice, but that wasn't going to fly with Congress.  So Kennedy was appointed as a compromise.

Of course, the concern is that with a Republican president and Congress, any new choices will be hardcore conservative.

I may have yelled at the news today. And I’m now depressed about the future of the country. Even more than I already was.

It’s like all of my worst projections and nightmares are coming true. Every single fucking worst case scenario I thought that people told me “I was being dramatic about” are becoming reality.  RBG can’t go anywhere. Stay strong!
