Ball Gown at a Beach Destination wedding - thoughts?

Hello fellow destination brides,

I have a dilemma. I have a ball gown that I absolutely loved and bought 5 years ago when I was engaged. Of course, the groom then was not my soulmate and I called off the wedding (thankfully!). But now here we are 5 years later and I am about to be married in on the beaches of Belize.

I never sold the dress becuase I guess subconsciously I loved the dress and thought that I would get married someday in it. The previous wedding was to be in a ballroom....but now with a destination beach wedding, is this dress still appropriate to wear or should I sell it and get a new one.

Will it drag the sand, will it be too hot, will it look right in pictures? these are the thoughts I am having.

Also is there anyway I can alter it to make it look more "beach" appropriate?

Here is the link to pictures of the dress. This is not my site (I am not selling it but all the photos are there).

Re: Ball Gown at a Beach Destination wedding - thoughts?

  • first: Have you told FI that you are planning on wearing a dress from your broken engagement? I was in a similar situation, and when FI knew I still had the dress (before we were even engaged) he ask that I not wear the dress because when I picked it out I envisioned myself spending my life with someone else.

Second: I think the dress would look lovely for a beach wedding, if you were to put a flower in your hair instead if a veil it might play into the beach look more.

  • I think there's nothing wrong with wearing a ball gown at a beach wedding - esp. that one b/c it doesn't have a lot of the frilly details that would make it more formal looking.

But silk satin will be REALLY HOT, esp. when you have lots of layers of it (which that one looks like it does).  I noticed a distinct difference when trying on the satin ball gowns (besides the fact that they're heavy as hayull) and the dresses made from other materials like taffeta and chiffon - satin is way hotter.  I sweat a lot as it is, so I didn't want to add to the issue by wearing a heavy hot dress.  Mine is somewhat formal-looking, but it's tafetta, and it feels lots cooler than the satin dresses I tried on.
  • Just to add to the other girl's posts, I agree that you could totally wear a ball gown if thats what you love. However, like Milky gal suggested you should think about/ask how FI would feel about it considering you bought it to wear at a wedding to someone else.

    Its a beautiful dress!
  • He knows about the dress, and is totally cool with it because he knew I bought the dress for me and I envisioned myself marrying the love of my life in it. The dress was right, the guy wasn't.

But Carrieoz you make a good point about the heaviness of the dress...it is duchess silk, which is heavy and I worry I will be hot in it.

I was thinking of wearing the dress for the ceremony through dinner and then changing into a more casual white knee or tea length dress for the rest of the reception.

well you girls have given me alot to think about.

    Thanks for your thoughts,
    Vyshiva
  • Welcome-and it IS beautiful.  :)

  • I think you should wear whatever you like!! It's YOUR day!

But you will probably be hot!
My dress was all lace and I was pretty hot.
My dress as a whole was pretty light weight and I didn't think it would be too bad, but my legs were really really sweaty all during my wedding & reception. Especially dancing. There are pics of me airing out my legs on the dance floor! Hahaha!
I loved my dress and I am still glad that I bought it (I wore that sucker til the end! There was no way I was changing! LOL), but just be aware you may sacrifice being comfortable.
  • My dress is a lot more formal than I thought I would wear, but I loved it and I am looking forward to marrying my best friend in it.  I think, on the beach, you can get away with anything.  flowers, jewelry (or lack of) can really help dress up/down a dress.  It will look wonderful...  But you will be hot.  Is the reception outdoors?  Or just the ceremony?
  • I think a ballgown is fine - I did it!
