I'm not motivated at work right now - anyone else?

Not even a little bit.

My car died. Wouldn't start yesterday when I was trying to leave work. H came to jump it and that didn't work either so we have to get it towed today.

We just dumped like $1,200 into it and I need it to run cheaply for another year. Get it together, Jeep.

I'm just happy it didn't happen Sunday night, though. That was the first time I'd ever driven to a Bears game and to be in a parking garage downtown an hour and a half from my house at 11:30 at night would have been scary.

I'm not motivated at all. To make matters works, H is going up to VT today to go skiing for a few days, and I'm insanely jealous.

That really sucks @ShesSoCold. Fingers crossed it’s something cheap and dumb to fix.

Work is slow and I'm just thinking about the rest of my week.

Tonight, my mom is coming to get DefConn for dinner and to see my foster nephew's Christmas thing at his preschool. DH and I are going to Christmas power shop.

Tomorrow, office day for me because it's the Christmas party and I miss my office peeps. Plus, games, prizes, fun, etc.

Thursday, my day off. More Christmas shopping and then lunch with mom. DH leaves that night to go get his grandma from NC with BIL.

And then, and then, and then...

Work is in the way of all that.

I'm motivated!

Speaking of things dying, our shower crapped out when DH was showering this morning. So his list of things to do tonight just grew. I think the solution is relatively simple but it's still more work than he anticipated for a Tuesday.

My sleepy town awoke to find out that a woman was stabbed to death in a local motel and the suspect is at large.

Flash to 9 AM and a local dad posts on the FB page for our school, "Why hasn't the school superintendent issued a statement??"

How about: Because the police said that there isn't a threat to the public at large? Because the superintendent doesn't comment on police matters that aren't a threat to the public at large anymore than the police report on SAT results? That the reality is that the motels in our town in winter are frequented by people who probably did not seek the lives they're leading, that this is probably an isolated incident motivated by one or more illicit and illegal things and someone who is going to stab a woman in a motel at 10 PM is probably not hanging around local bus stops or school playgrounds 12 hours later.

And if there was a local threat to schools there would also be a posted threat to the houses and other businesses NEAR the schools.

You know your town is sleepy with people who need their hand held when they aren't sure what to do when they aren't told that everything is fine.

I'm so close to a 10 day break (starting next Friday through NYD) and I was just sick for 2 days last week, this week feel infinite. I have plenty of work to do, so I'm plugging through.

I get to see my sister on Friday though!!! She lives overseas and usually only comes home around Christmas, so I haven't seen her for about a year. I'm so crazy excited and that's helping to get me through a little.

Sorry about your car SSC, that really stinks - hoping for a quick fix!

We always get an extra week off at Christmas or New Years (well usually 3 days, since holidays round out the week). I feel like they should have announced it by now although I feel confident we will get it because that would be a really tough thing to take away after doing it for 10+ years.

I usually take Christmas week off but now I'm thinking I might do New Years instead. I'm fairly certain my H is off both weeks burning vacation time which cramps my style. I like days off by myself haha

@ShesSoCold, hope things get figured out with your car and it's nothing too expensive. Though it does seem like "expensive", in regards to car repairs, is merely a relative term. You are correct, though. Having it break down at your house was substantially better than breaking down so much further from home.

I am more motivated than I usually am at work today. But that is also a relative term, lol. As in "more motivated than usual", but still not very motivated. For once, I got a good night's sleep last night.

I need to go shopping today after work for a White Elephant gift at an upcoming Christmas lunch. It's a bit weird/awkward because I am going with the Doc Control group at my company. We work in two different buildings. So I will know 2-3 of the people pretty well...at least I hope they're going (eek!)...but don't really know or work with anybody else who will be there. I went last year and only knew one person, lol. But it was still fun, so I'm going again.

I think I'm going to take the idea I gave to @Casadena the other day. Get a $1-$2 Christmas/winter mug or tumbler from somewhere like Family Dollar and then fill it with $1 scratch-off lottery tickets. It's a $20 gift limit. But I'm open to other ideas if anyone has suggestions.

Ya’ll with your time off! Makes me jealous. We used to only get Christmas day and NYD off but we got sold and now we get the Eve’s so I’m not complaining!!

Banana - that’s so sad. And unfortunately, like you said, she probably got caught up in something she shouldn't have been doing.

i have to finish my christmas shopping today. Which is just press “purchase” since I filled up my amazon cart the last few days. I decided H is getting jeans. Not very romantic but he NEEDS them.

DH is taking off the week of Christmas. I'm not excited unless he uses that time to actually take the kids away for a bit. It usually just means more house work and more people around me while I try to work.

Nothing much today. I've been at the computer since 6 doing shit. My neck is really stiff and is bothering me so I think I'm calling it a morning.

I have a bunch of thank you notes to write- my religion class was incredibly generous and I feel a little bad I didn't do as much for my kids' teachers. Oh well, they got buckeyes. There's only so much money in my account.

Max and I are going to COSI this afternoon.

The touchpad on my laptop kept getting turned off. I couldn't figure out why or how to turn it back on so I kept restarting. It's a double click in the corner. My thumb pad was hitting it to turn it off.

@CharmedPam, yep. I only get Christmas and New Year's off at my job. But I do tend to hoard my vacation time. So I'm using vacation days for the Eves and am also going to take the day after Christmas off. Because 30% off Hickory Farms at Target and 50% off gift sets everywhere, lol.

We only get off Christmas day, and New Year's day. We're also "advised" to not take off during December. It sucks. We'll probably leave early on Christmas Eve, which I'm hosting at my house so STRESS PRESSURE AHHHHHHHH.

We get Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off. We only started getting Christmas Eve off a few years ago. They played with being closed the day after Thanksgiving instead, but we run with a skeleton crew that day and then get the two days off for Christmas. We are only closed New Year's Day, but I think we close early NYE.

A few years ago, I started taking Christmas week off. I'm with you, 6...I hate trying to work with everyone home and holiday shit going on. I'm not looking forward to the 4 work days I'll have after New Year's where the kids will be home. I'm hoping DH will take a day off that week besides New Year's Day.

They gave us Christmas Eve and NYE this year since they're Mondays, which is nice.

We're also not supposed to take PTO in December but we only get to carry over 3 days to the next year. They should move the PTO year to end in like October to avoid the annual issues of people either taking PTO when they're super busy or losing days.

H and I decided to host his family Christmas Eve. There's usually a party with H's dad's extended family but nobody heard from this year yet. So that makes it easier to see them because we have to see my dad and my mom's side of the family on Christmas day.

When we hosted Thanksgiving (Saturday after), H's stepmom asked if she could invite her parents because she didn't invite them to her house because it's such a mess and she's embarrassed. So that's my problem, I guess. NBD, but yesterday H's stepmom asked if she could invite like 5 more of her extended family to my house. WTF. I've never even heard of these people, let alone met them, and she's wants me to have to host them? The 15 people already coming is going to be a PITA with my one oven and lack of dining room. Pretty ballsy to ask to invite so many people to someone else's house and then make us feel like the assholes because we can't accommodate.

SSC that is ridiculous on not being able to use PTO in Dec yet it expires at the end of the year. We run on a 7/1 cycle which helps since people can't take much time off at the end of the year due to work volume.

I was going to take some time around Christmas off again, but i want to hoard up my vacation time for a bit. K doesn't have classes this summer and it'd be awful nice to have a real vacation for once.

I hit a wall yesterday at work of no motivation. I think I was hangry, sleepy, and just depressed all at once. I ate and felt some better, took a long bath and went to bed early, so I conquered 2 of those things. I'm still feeling a bit blue about things, but that will start to lift. There was drama surrounding my resignation, b/c of course there was. But I realized I no longer have five email accounts to keep up with. And, out of curiosity, I went back and counted up all FB events related to community service that i had hosted, meaning I did anywhere from one hour of work upwards to take care of that event. I had 250 events in 5 years. That's basically an event per week. So, the comedown from this is going to be hard.

Today is also a weird day in Varuna history. 2 years ago, K was winning their first state drag title. 3 years ago, I made an announcement about my divorce and was signing on my first apartment by myself ever. It's just been a helluva past 5 years, TBH. I keep thinking about a new project, but really I'm enjoying just sitting on my butt at home too.

It is!! It's nice that they get a lot of vacation over there, so she's usually able to come home for 2-3 weeks. But stinks that it's only once a year.

I hoarded vacation days this year so i'm able to take a bunch of time off around the holidays and still roll over 4 days. They're only giving us Xmas eve/day and NYD - I'm using vacation for everything in between. But I work in finance and it's a super slow time for us so taking vacation around holidays is never really an issue.

S&S - I think the mug and lottery tix is a winner, especially if it's for people you don't know well. In the ones I've been to recently, interesting beer/wine have been popular, board games (maybe hardd for $20) have been popular, and coffee stuff (some combo of nice bag of beans, Sbux gift card, mug, etc)

Casadena, time with your sister will be awesome. I feel like Canadian and European companies ALL get more Holiday and vacation time compared to the average American.

christmas shopping is done! well, I have to find something small for my coworkers. Usually do something edible. It’s a great feeling to be done.

Holy cow- smil has been tired, short of breath, and generally feeling bad since thanksgiving. She even ended up cancelling because she was in the Ed.

She had a heart catheter this morning. They found a 99% blockage in the widow maker artery! Doctors said she was very, very lucky. My brother said it doesn’t usually end like this.

My grandma is actually going for an appointment today for similar feelings. Not sure if she is going just to a family doc or specialist

I have to say as a total stranger to you I get so excited every time you post about actually taking time for yourself and giving yourself downtime! You were so burned out I think and in a few years I bet you’ll be surprised by how useful this time was big picture.

Ugh sorry to everyone who’s discouraged from taking time off this time of year. I’m at a school- we’re discouraged from taking personal days but bc were off a lot. Like for Christmas we’re off 12/24-1/2. So lots of time off, but we’re told exactly when it is.
I’m so drained my son’s teacher called me back in at dismissal and totally unleashed like 13 different things he has to work on. I stood there nodding and listening bc it’s important for teachers to know parents are on their side and not automatically the kid’s. In hindsight I wish I’d slowed her down a bit. He clearly had a bad day today and he’s a huge handful...he’s by far the most annoying of my kids day in and day out. But it was a lot all at once and I wasn’t prepared with questions and the “what steps should we take going forward”. I’ll have to schedule a meeting. Anyone ever feel like laying down and doing nothing instead of their evening routine?

I knew the day after a vacation day would be busy and I definitely wasn’t wrong.

But it I had a great day yesterday so I’ll take a long day today.
