Airbrush makeup vs the good old fashioned stuff?

Hey everyone,

I've never had airbrush makeup done but I've saw several people say on here that for a wedding it is the way to go.

What are the differences in airbrush and traditional makeup?

I want something that doesn't look too terribly fake (cakey) but that will stay put all day and half the night (we are starting our "photo tour" at 1pm, getting married at sunset and then the reception following so it will be a long day).  The makeup artist I'm hiring does both but I thought I'd ask you guys for "the truth" before I decided on anything.

My face tends to get a little greasy and shiny after a while, I usually use an oil mattifier under my makeup, don't know if this matters with airbrush makeup or not.

So any advice/suggestions/details anyone wants to share will be greatly appreciated.

    I had my makeup/hair preview yesterday and it's airbrush makeup and I am OBSESSED. Downright OBSESSED!! lol..  I honestly have never looked so good in my life. My skin was literally flawless and my makeup artist said it would last all day and night. I decided to put it to the test and went to bed with my makeup on (I know, I know) and in the morning my makeup was still perfect. I also rubbed a shirt against my face and nothing came off on the shirt. It looked amazing yet not cakey at all.

    I've heard wonderful things about airbrush and that it doesn't look cakey or fake at all. If my MUA had either one I'd go for the airbrush! Can you get a trial to see if you like it on you?

    I'm using Dior Airflash because I'm doing my own makeup, and not willing to invest in a whole airbrush system.  If I was getting my makeup done I would do airbrush, I've heard nothing but amazing things from people who have had it done correctly.

    I know Stephie is a big advocate of it, she should chime in with her experience.

    I have done airbrush makeup and also own my own Dinair airbrush machine.  As I have said in one of the other posts, airbrush makeup sound nice, but it has not been around long enough to be perfected.  There are two types of airbrush, silicone and waterbased.  The waterbased one is the problem because you cannot apply it after using moisturizer (not sure about a matifier).  So for those with dry skin, it will not turn out as beautiful.  Airbrushing also isn't ideal for people who want full coverage.  It goes on lightly. 

    However, since you mentioned your skin is oily and you want a light coverage it seems, that it will be ideal for you. 

    Keep in mind though that traditional makeup can still look natural and beautiful.  You just need the right foundation that photographs well.  Traditional makeup has been around for so long and there many new and inventative foundations now that are made for HD cameras.  They will look like natural skin.

    I did airbrush makeup at my trial, and it was awesome. Very lightweight, not cakey at all, and looked fantastic.   However, I have fairly normal skin (not dry, not oily), so it might work differently on different skin.   Also, my sister used regular liquid make-up (applied by a makeup artist) for her wedding and it also looked amazing, so there are definitely options for you if airbrush doesn't work.

    My bridesmaids and I all had airbrush done for my wedding.  We all LOVED it.  It was probably one of the best decisions we made.  The make up looked flawless and stayed on throughout the whole entire day/night.  It did not look cakey or fake or over the top what so ever.

    I vote airbrush!

    I was airbrushed for both my E-pics and wedding.  Since I loved it for my E-pics, I had my trial with regular just to compare and it was then I knew that airbrush was the way to go.  My skin looked flawless, it lasted all night both times I had it and I looked great in every photograph.  All I did at my wedding was powder my nose once after dinner and reapply my lipstick.  My siggy pic is one of the very last ones of the night and it still looked great.

    That being said, the key to good airbrush makeup is an experienced artist so make sure you hire someone with experience and I also recommend a trial first--there are a few brides out there who have tried it and didn't care for it, so you never know until you try it.

    ETA:  I have to somewhat disagree with the PP--I have dry skin and my airbrush looked wonderful both times.  The complaints I have heard on this board are mostly from those with oily skin.  I also never felt that it didn't provide full coverage, in fact I  insisted to my MUA that I wanted my freckles covered (although she was somewhat hesitant to cover them fully).

    I think you can find people on these boards to support both types of makeup.  I had a Sephora associate use the Temptu airbrush machine on me.  I didn't like the finish and the color match was pretty bad too. 

    I used Make Up For Ever HD foundation on my wedding day.  I used primer, finishing powder, and setting spray.  I didn't have any problems with it lasting all day.  My skin looked great in both the video and photos.  

    I was in a wedding were the bride and bridal party went to MAC to have makeup applied.  Everyone looked good using traditional foundation then.  So I think you can have great results when using traditional foundation.  However, if I were you, I would definitely try the airbrushed makeup during the trial and see how you like it.

    I used an awesome MAC artist, since I wanted someone who would do something a bit funky and not the traditional "bride" makeup.  She airbrushes and has a system, but she prefers to do traditional on brides because she says she can do more stuff and has more control over different areas of the face to perfect it.  She was pretty kickass and my makeup lasted from 10am until after midnight. 

    The key to either looking good and lasting is a really great MUA and great product.

    I tried it at my trial and decided to not use it.  My skin is pretty clear and I am very fair, I found it made me look a bit orange and I had make up streaks on my neck.  It may have just been the make up she used and my coloring but I wasn't impressed.  I felt prettier in my CVS covergirl stuff.
