New publishing schedule? Glitch? Idk but here’s a question for a Monday morning (sorry if someone posted already and I missed it):

Dear Prudence,
As a recreational cross-dresser, I’m increasingly feeling like I want to transition, which would make me trans and a lesbian. However, I have serious doubts about some “LGBT rights.” I am firmly against allowing trans women to compete in women’s sports. I am against forcing bakers to participate in celebrations that they don’t agree with. I am even sympathetic to concerns about an “LGBT agenda” being pushed on children and parents. On the other hand, I have used the ladies’ restroom while en femme and am grateful for LGBT protections that may make my life easier going forward. I used to think that a middle ground was often good, but now I’m not sure whether such middle grounds are really viable. Would it be wrong to transition while holding lukewarm views on LGBT rights?

    My view is that transitioning is about who you are and how you want to live, and you get to do that no matter what beliefs you hold. But also seems like a good time to do some more thinking about those beliefs.

    Well, LW is not alone in that sort of journey.  Kaitlyn Jenner is perhaps most famous transwoman for starting out in a similar thought path and seems to be finally understanding that it was never about the damn cake.

    I guess the answer is No, it's not wrong to transition, everyone deserves the right to live their authentic selves.  And they'll have to go into therapy for that anyway, so it might be time to explore why LW thinks the way they do and start exploring dismantling their own inner...well, bigotry and patriarchal thinking.  Transwomen live a very difficult life and LW is going to need a lot of support that they aren't going to find easily.

    I suppose LW can pursue this but LW also needs to understand that in doing this, they have to acknowledge that in their own views that may not be supportive of themselves.

    I'd highly recommend talking to a therapist specializing with therapy for trans patients.

    LW would hardly be the first person to hold beliefs that were against their own self interest (of the collective interests of similarly situated persons).  I don't think it means they shouldn't transition.
