Wednesday!

I signed up for a digital subscription for NY Mag because I love Vulture's content (especially their TV recaps), but I found "Dear Polly" on The Cut and yeeesh. I'll post the letter here in a sec.  Warning, it's long AF.

It's cloudy and going to rain later. DH is leaving at the crack of dawn tomorrow to go to Nashville.  He gets preferred seating for the Tim McGraw concert on Thursday night at the Draft since they were invited by the Colts.  I'm jealous.

Other than that, SSDD.  Whee.

Re: Wednesday!

  • That’s awesome for your H @mrsconn23!

My leg is feeling a bit better this morning. I was able to run two slow miles and do tons of stretching. I’m hoping this is a good sign for Sunday!

I went to bed at like 9pm last night and it was glorious!
  • @mrsconn23, I appreciate the bonus "Prudie" content for Wed...even if it is a totally different advice column, Polly, lol.

@charlotte989875, I'm glad your leg is feeling better.  I also hope you'll be fully recovered for the big run on Sun.

I have been feeling so unmotivated at work.  I never have enough energy and sometimes it is hard to trudge through.  And then I feel spoiled and ungrateful, because it's a good job that isn't too demanding and with a great company.  It could be so much worse and I've had it so much worse, lol.  But the malaise lingers on anyway.  "Malaise", lol.  Sometime it make me laugh when the first word that pops in my head is a hoity toity, 50-center.  Like, "where did that come from?"

After work today, I have a mystery shop.  For once, it's not a dinner shop.  But there is a "build your burrito" Chipolte type place (but not Chipolte) next to it and I have a BOGO coupon.  Yum!

  • Glad your leg is better, @charlotte989875!

Well, my day started with computer issues. Someone sent a phishing email yesterday, and a few people tried to open the attachment, which prompted people for their passwords. Everyone had to reset their passwords.

I also found out that our crazy neighbor also put a camera in the laundry room. DW talked to the landlord, and he’s making the guy get rid of the cameras.

    Is it Friday yet?
  • MrsConn - Awesome for H!

Charlotte - Glad your knee is holding up well!

OWK - What a weirdo!  I would be skeeved out about him and all his cameras!  Good thing the landlord is making him get rid of them!

Yesterday was so crazy!  I lurked for a hot second, but didn't even get through the full Tuesday post!

I still have a bunch to do, but not as urgently!  DD has been adjusting well to her new bed.  Still doesn't realize she can get out of it though!  I had to wake her up this morning, it was so cute.  She just starts stretching her tiny body and its really funny.  It was a full 5 minutes before I got the normal "Hi Mommy".

Not much going on tonight.  We are trying to get more siding quotes, but no one is calling H back.  We are moving money around and trying to think about when we can get this done.  But with only one quote so far, we don't know if they are really high, low or average!  I do like the company who gave us a quote, but still want to figure out where they usually are in terms of everything.

I got the weirdest phishing e-mail in my work account yesterday.

I guess it was supposed to look like it was coming from a business that does lab work.  And said something like, "This e-mail is to confirm your April 23rd, 11:00AM appointment for a drug test."  With instructions to click "here" to confirm.

As if anyone would ever say to themselves, "Oh no, golly gee, I have no memory of ever setting an appointment for my company's DRUG TEST.  And, huh, they've always been random.  Whelp, guess I better click the link."  Come on, scammers!  Can't you even halfway try?  With at least a kernel of believability?  They obviously need a training session with the scammers that spammed @OurWildKingdom's workplace.

What was even more fun is I got the e-mail over 30 minutes after my "appointment" started.  Poor scammers.  They would have no way to know the client's e-mail servers live in the Pacific time zone and I'm in Central.  Oh yeah!  And I'm a contractor, not an employee, of this company.

    So cute!

It's often some persistence along with some "luck".  Like, happening to catch the person when they can answer the phone.  Do not ask me why it is often difficult to be literally trying to hand someone money for work.  But it is, lol.  With that said, I strongly recommend getting quotes.  They can sometimes be vastly different.  And always use a company with a good reputation even if they are a bit more expensive (and they may not be) for this kind of big, expensive job.

We replaced almost all the siding on our house a few years ago with Hardie board siding.  The portion we replaced was for about 1500 sq. ft. of the property size.  Just the labor was in the $4K-$5K range, but we didn't use a general contractor.  We bought all the materials ourselves.  Around another $2K.  However, none of that included painting the siding.  We DIY'ed that.  There are also types of siding that don't need to be painted.

  • I’m jealous of your hubby too @mrsconn23.
Glad your on the mend @charlotte989875!
you’d be surprised at how many people click those phishing links. We get warnings from time to time and I always wonder... who fell for that in 2019?

today is admin professional day so I brought in some pastries from our local bakery that was getting some good reviews on nextdoor.  They talked me into buying some monkey bread that JUST came out of the oven.  Never had it before.  I took less than 1/4 of the bun - let me tell you, I could probably pass that up again.  WAY to sweet for me.  Aside from 1/4 of the bun I resisted the temptation though!  Reward was a mini milkyway.

S+S - The one company who has provided the quote said this is a busy time of year for siding companies.  So that partly explains the lack of response.  We are going with a mid-grade vinyl product, so no painting needed for life!  We want as minimal of maintenance as possible!  And the company who did give us the quote said after waiting until the siding arrives from the order and their scheduling, we probably wouldn't get it done until mid-summer!

Pam - We got our Admin's flowers and a gift card to a local restaurant.  The firm is having a catered lunch that was so very yummy!  They usually have a catered breakfast and I was at first disappointment there was no breakfast, but the lunch more than satisfied!  LOL!

    6 - Happy belated Anniversary!

Vinyl makes me sad because I can't really use it, lol.  It's a great, much cheaper product for most of the country.  The material is cheaper and so is the labor, because it's a lot faster to install than Hardie or wood.  But it is a horrible material to use down here.  The sun and harsh heat of the summer deteriorates it and turns it brittle.

Oh!  I also wanted to mention a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) if you all don't already have one, since the repairs might be more than you all were planning.  I think that type of product is the best thing since sliced bread.  In a nutshell, you can borrow money against the equity in your house for an interest rate that isn't much higher than a traditional mortgage loan.  But, similar to a credit card, there isn't any interest to pay if you don't take money out and incur a balance.  It's also really flexible.  There's a minimum monthly payment, which is usually pretty low compared to the balance, but other than that, you can pay it off as fast or slow as you want.

Most banks don't charge any/minimal fees for having one.  Though they'll need to do an appraisal on the house.  They might charge you for that, but I've seen that charge waived also.  Most banks will allow a HELOC of up to 80% of the value of the equity...the equity, not the home value (darn it, lol).

  • My former crazy tenants, lol (crazy meant as a positive endearment).  I just checked my business checking balance and they still haven't cashed the security deposit check I sent them.  I send those certified, return receipt.  So I know they picked up the letter about 3 weeks ago.  A decent chunk of change...$850!  The only thing I can think of is maybe they haven't opened a bank account yet.  They moved out of state, so couldn't cash it directly at my bank.  But still, a bit surprising.

  • Glad you are feeling better Charlotte. FX that you are 100% for your race.

Varuna- sounds like a fantastic weekend!

Welp. I worked out, met with my friend, and then rode (and jumped)  tonight. So today is the most productive day I have had in months. I can already tell my legs are going to be so sore tomorrow, lol.

MrsConn- do you listen to Sword and Scale?? I am catching up on the last few weeks episodes. There was all this drama with the host and all of a sudden, New Host, with no explanation. I don't care enough to google it but just wondering if you noticed, lol.

My VVVVVVVVIP client may or may not be coming tomorrow. I can not get an answer out of anyone on whether or not I need to a) have childcare or b) go to work tomorrow. It is so annoying.

Do you know who the VIP client is (and can you share with us??). I’m betting it’s Clooney.
  • @charlotte989875 lol... No, they are the daughters of someone locally important. I have not even been told directly who, though I am 99% sure who it is. Let's just say, there is a guy who brings them and then there are guys who watch the guy who brings them, lol. They are very sweet girls and I enjoy them very much. I just have to roll my eyes at how difficult communication is.

OMG, so ridic!!! It boils down to that Mike Boudet is an asshole and has attacked or harassed listeners (especially female...he was calling them fat or asking for nudes on DMs) and finally, it got so bad that Rabia Chaudry and the LPOTL guys along with a horde of twitter people basically called for a boycott of Wondery unless he was fired/taken off the show.  They lost all their sponsors. So S+S's production company (which Boudet started) decided to yank him so a bunch of people didn't get fired and the show could go on.  They replaced him with the new host.  I tried to listen to her first ep the other night and I'm not sold.  I did know Boudet was problematic and started dropping off on making it something I had to listen to, but I still kept up.  I'm not sure if I will now.  The whole thing is gross.

Also, after he got fired...he went on a rampage against all the podcasters who did 'gang up' on him on twitter and went on all these third rate radio shows and maybe some other podcasts to just go off on how he was being persecuted and his 'free speech' was being attacked.  LOLxforever.
  • Shocking conversation my H and I had a few days ago.  Over a phrase that I thought was simple, plain English.  But apparently it isn't, lol.

I was watching a commercial for the new season of Swamp People...my H was in the room, but not looking at the tv...and I exclaimed, "Oh look!  That's fun.  They have sliding boards set up to drop people right into the bayou."

He didn't look fast enough to see what I was describing and asked me to repeat what I said.  He seemed really confused.  I repeated myself a couple times.  And then he asked, "What do you mean by sliding board?"  WTF?  What do I mean by sliding board?  What is wrong with him?  I say, "A SLIDING BOARD.  Like at a little kid's playground.  Sometimes people set them up to dump into a swimming pool.  These people had set one up to dump into the bayou.  Just a regular slide.  Like you'd see at a playground, except it drops people into the water and I thought that was fun."

Him:  "Oh, you mean a slide.  I have never heard of a sliding board."  (scrunches his face), "You call that a sliding board?"

I looked at him incredulously, "Yes.  Because it is.  Sometimes I'll say slide.  They're the same thing."

He goes on to explain he has only ever heard that piece of playground equipment called a "slide".  He thought maybe I was talking about if someone flattens out a piece of cardboard and uses it to slide down a hill...because that was the only board he could think of that slides...but that hadn't made sense in my context.

We Googled it.  And found similar debates, lol.  Turns out, there are lots of people who have never heard the term "sliding board".  I thought it would be a really regional thing.  Like "pop" vs. "soda".  But it didn't seem to be and was more random than that.

We say both here in Ohio. I think the earliest reference I remember was to a sliding board.

Edited to add: My dad was in the Army and my mom’s first language isn’t English, so one of them may have picked up “sliding board” elsewhere.
  • Soooooo I’m with your husband on this one, @short+sassy

  • Happy belated anniversary, @6fsn
  • Soooooo I’m with your husband on this one, @short+sassy
Same! I’ve only ever heard slide.
  • S+S.. I have never heard that term, lol.
In a similar vein, my friends and I meet most weeks for coffee at a coffee shop near where several of them live. This week my friend asked if we would rather have coffee at her place. I told her I have invited a new person and thought we should keep it at the coffee shop. Then I said "Otherwise, I would be totally down." English is not her first language so after a minute or so she responds "googling "to be down" ::laughy face::".
  • MrsConn- I really liked the few couple seasons of s&s but the quality of the writing has been declining and Mike was getting annoying with his flare for dramatics but I kept listening. But after that temper tantrum post about them cancelling him for free speech!, When will people learn that free speech does not mean free from judgement! I never thought twice about Boudet but seriously, what a tool!
And I thought the next host came on without explaination but I was listening Most recent first instead of in order. Their introduction was so inappropriate. Idk who wrote it, (the team, Mike, or the new host) but they seriously think they are victims. It is insane. Then the case they chose to do... It is bizarre. I enjoyed the podcast but they should have stayed off their soapbox.
  • I've never heard the term sliding board either! I wouldn't have know what you were talking about lol!

Yeah, her 'intro' was awful.  It pretty much put me off immediately.

Another criticism of the show was how he used 911 calls, A LOT and let them play for too long.  And I think one of the victims, who was a child at the time his 911 call was placed, came for him on FB or Twitter and Boudet was a dick about it (per his usual).

While he might have gotten into it to tell stories and/or explore true crime, by the end of his time on the show, it definitely seemed more exploitative and seeing how grisly it could get without adding to the narrative of the story they were telling, plus he was adding his own personal narrative into the story and it was never positive or kind.  I'm OK with podcasters doing a whole story and drawing their conclusions about a case after researching (which quite a few reporters turned podcasters have talked about how hard it is for them to do since they had to be objective in their jobs for so long), but nasty quips is quite another.

Exactly. It was like he was trying to get an award for the most shocking, grotesque story. Which, as a fan of horror movies and stuff, I am not against but his taste level is questionable and the writing was just getting bad. Everyone talks about how gory his new show is but I couldn't get into it because they try too hard to be edgy, it is too obvious. It would be one thing if his commentary was interesting or insightful but mostly it is biased and uninformed.

The more I learn about him, the more I am like good riddance. I might have kept listening to the show with the new host but it is apparent the bad writing wasn't just his own doing.
