September 2012 Weddings

Sales people are *interesting*

Originally I was a March 2012 bride.  So last April I had gone dress shopping, fell in love, and bought.  Part of why I bought the same day I tried it on was because the sales person told me that the dress was a "last year" style and the sale ended that day.  Over the summer we moved the wedding to September and I already had my dress in my possession and it was still appropriate.  So, why I wanted to post was because for sh*ts and giggles I went to David's website to see if they still had my dress.  They do!  And, it's on sale for the exact price my mom bought it for.  I have no regrets about the dress I chose so I can find this comical but that sales woman (who I haven't seen again in that store despite going in there 3 or so times since the purchase) really used a scare-tactic.  It is 10 months later and the dress, even on sale isn't cheaper than the sales price last year let alone discontinued haha.

If any one IS having anxiety about purchasing right away use this as a lesson....at least at David's.  A high-end salon with a sample sale obviously would be a little different.  The wedding industry is just so silly sometimes.

  • That's ridiculous! I can't believe she blatantly lied to you! I had a similar experience though not quite as bad. I bought my dress at a trunk show, so basically all of that designer's dresses were discounted for two days. I loved my dress as did my mom and my sister, and I knew I wouldn't be able to afford it without the discount. So even though I didn't feel quite ready to commit to a dress yet, I decided to buy it because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to later. My salesperson conveniently never mentioned that my designer would be having at least three or four more trunk shows at their store with plenty of time for me to buy before my wedding, so I could have waited until one of the later ones! I love my dress, but I still feel a little annoyed about that...

  • They really are interesting.  Do David's employees make commission on their sales?  I've just started looking at bridesmaids dresses and they've told me all the dresses should be purchased together so that the fabric is all from the same lot.  Meh, I don't believe it will make that much of a difference.  I told my girls to buy their dresses when they can and don't let the sales people pressure you into making a rash decision.

That is smart advice, I wish I'd told myself that!

  • Maybe she knew she wouldn't be working there anymore and wanted commission that day?

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • I definitely think DB works off of commission. I have to say though, I bought my dress from there and my consultant couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. But I've heard about this kind of thing before, how consultants will pretty much lie to you in order to get the sale. It sucks, but I'm sure a lot of industries where the sales people work off of commission do the same thing.
