Are your parents your entire support system?

Dear Prudence,

I have fibromyalgia, a chronic and unpredictable illness that causes severe pain and fatigue. I’m doing my best to manage it but have had to give up a lot, including my job. Using a wheelchair on days when I need to travel long distances and be out of the house would really improve my quality of life. I haven’t been able to broach the topic of getting a wheelchair with my parents because they are quite ableist and have made it clear they think people who can walk and use wheelchairs are lazy. My parents still don’t accept that I am really unwell and constantly struggling just to get out of bed. How do I convince them that getting a wheelchair is the best thing for me moving forward?

  • How old is the LW?

Dear LW, if you are not able to work then I recommend that perhaps through your physician you seek an attorney who can help you file the proper paperwork for disability and the medical equipment that you need.

It's unknown if you are young and on your parents insurance or if you are living with them but you will need to continue to talk to them about what is necessary for your status.   Perhaps you can also bring paperwork to them to illustrate what you are intending to file.

Also, if the wheelchair is going to help then consider the additional steps of having handicapped parking passes.   Again, a lot of this is going to be done with the help of a professional with expertise in your situation.

I agree with pp.  Discuss the need with your health care provider.  You will most likely need a prescription for the wheelchair from your provider in order for insurance to cover all or part of the cost.

It sounds as though your parents may be some denial about the true nature of your condition.  You may need to seek a therapist for you to deal with your illness AND your parents.
