Formal invites didn't specify and guest?

We sent out invitations that listed just the single person and did not include and guest. The RSVP says M__________ for filling out for the guest. We didn't specify and guest, how do we make sure our guests know they are welcome to bring a guest. Invitations have been sent. Should we send a note sayings two seats have been saved in their honor?

    I agree with @MobKaz. However, depending on how far out you are from the wedding you could send a note. If you just now sent out the invitations and realized your mistake, a note that would arrive a day or so after the invitation would work. If more than a few days has passed, I agree you need to call the guests.
