Name Change / Buying a Car

Hello! I'm in the market to buy a car soon and I'm getting married on November 14. Should I wait to buy the car after I change my name or would I be okay to do it before?

I guess my question revolves around the headache of change. Another "fun" fact, my birthday is December 4 and my license expires this year, so I want to change my name before so I don't have to pay for a new license twice.

Re: Name Change / Buying a Car

  • I don’t think it will matter for the car but I would wait to do your license. Depending on what state you’re in it’s usually easiest to do your social security card first then wait for that to arrive and do car/ license/ everything else. Given your timing that should actually work out well.
  • I agree with @charlotte989875.  I don't see why it would matter for the car.  The loan and registration would be in your maiden name.  You could probably update both of those things after you got married if you wanted to, but I wouldn't bother.

I also agree on waiting to renew your driver's license until after the wedding.  The OMV in my state (Louisiana) requires the name change is done with social security first.  But they said it only takes about one business day for that change to go into effect with SS and they can see it in their system.

I'd call (or look it up online) your DMV/OMV ahead of time, to see what they require and hopefully get an idea of timelines.

  • At this point, if you don't mind holding off until after the wedding and getting your Social Security changed, and license, that sounds like the fiduciary responsible way to go in the overall.  The PITA part may be getting your official marriage license back in time for the name change on your Driver's License...
