Wedding Woes

This Is Us? (there may be spoilers)

Did anyone watch?

I got to the end and went, "NO! Stop it!"

Re: This Is Us? (there may be spoilers)

  • I think I missed all of last year.   I NEED to watch that season and then be current.   I saw the teasers for this year and now I want to dive back in.
  • Fuck, I forgot it was on!
  • I forgot too until someone mentioned it on FB last night.  I watched it this morning.
  • Posting so I remind myself to come back after watching it. I PVR'd it
  • I didn't know it was on!

Why didn't it record?  Oh yeah.  I probably set it to stop recording some time after the series finale, lol.  Dang it!

I just finished watching. Had to watch so I could check out the thread.

The question becomes how does Randall’s mom intertwine

    edit: maybe his new therapist?!

OH shit! I didn't even think of that twist!  But I would not put it past the show.

I *do* hope they move the present day story along quickly.  The simmering tension between the three makes the show hard to watch for me.  I'd rather see them all hash it out and have the fights.
  • Agreed, I don't like the fighting. My therapist thing may be way off but since he said he was searching for a black therapist I thought it might be possible. Definitely think there is going to be some connection that he's either interacted with her in the past or will soon
  • I have a theory! I think that Randall's mom is not alive in present day. I think we will learn her story more through flashbacks but she does end up dying at a young(er) age. However, I think she goes on to have another child before she dies and that is who Randall will connect with in the present day.

    HIS NEW THERAPIST!  LOL

I am living for all these TIU theories.

I think that might be it too. I'm convinced the new therapist is involved

    Great theory!

  • Finally watched and avoided this page before I did.
THAT FUCKING ENDED OMG! Audible gasp and "omg noooo"

Therapist HAS to be the intertwine!

Now, do we wonder if potential other child is male or female?

Also I like how they addressed Kate with Randall - him telling her to tone it down on it all, without being rude or condescending.

Maybe UO I like Kevin with Madison.
  • I think it would be interesting if it was a half-brother. Randall already has so many females in his life. Plus with the contentious relationship between him and Kevin it would be an interesting contrast. He will be able to bond with him too over lif-experience of being a black man vs. his other siblings.

    Kinda like how he bonded with Marik {sp?}

    Malik. :)

Also, I distinctly remember that the show creator/runner said they had a plan for the whole arc of the series and that it's likely to end after season 6 or 7.  It makes me wonder, since they're clearly taking Randall in a direction based on the events of the summer of 2020, if this was part of the outline due to previous events in the recent past and this just accelerated it because of the current situation.  I mean, Randall was starting to question his place in the family and identity, but the fight with Kevin was more about mom and Randall being a pushy know-it-all, his panic disorder, and need to control everything.

This is season 5, so it could still be wrapped up in 2 more seasons.  But I feel like going this direction is going to be a tightrope because it could really create plot holes from the story we know so far.  That's the danger with a series like this where there's all this timeline jumping and trying to bring in current day and current issues.

Oops! I never even heard the L lmao!

I feel they're able to examine Randall's questioning his place in a different way because of the protests, and being born to a white family - he was able to talk and relate to Malik because of the other black guy who was killed and how he felt and ended up dealing with it solo.

Side note, I really like Malik :) I feel like he'd be a more mature dude even if he didn't have a daughter. Just seems like who he'd be as a person.
  • Also, while I don't mind that they're exploring this with Randall because I think it's important, Sterling K. Brown is brilliant actor who can pull it off, and it does make sense for the character, I hope it doesn't go too far in the 'after school special' direction.  The mythology of the show is Jack, the man he was, and how his shadow and loss of him looms large over the family and their interpersonal dynamics to this day.

Side note have you seen Sterling K Brown in Brooklyn 99? His character was so good!

Last year, one of my channels was regularly showing the old/original Law and Order show.  Sterling was on an occasional episode as a defense attorney.  I was like, "OMG, it's Randall!  YEA!" lol.  Law and Order had so many actors in bit parts that later had major parts in other shows.

He also does the voice in Frozen 2 of one of the soldiers. It's really good and they did his character pretty close to what he'd look like as a cartoon - I was pretty impressed.
  • We watched and enjoyed the episode, though I will say we both hated the scene with Randall's Mom at the end, though I wasn't surprised when he had hinted earlier in the episode about not even knowing if it really was his birthday.  DH said it felt like  soap opera cop out

your H isn't wrong. They've dropped hints and ended up being obvious plot points, but I like how they write it out though.

Did he see last season's first ep "Strangers" ? I did not see half of that playing out as it did.
  • I finally watched last night, and then fell asleep for the last 10ish minutes...haha. So I missed the therapist scene you guys are all referencing. I'll have to go back tonight!

I still cringe at what Kevin said to Randall at the end of last season. To me, that's unforgivable and I sort of hope Randall doesn't forgive him, if that makes any sense. I also love how he handled what Kate was saying to him.

Does anyone remember when they had showed this scene of Rebecca getting lost last season? They led us first to believe it was happening during the Thanksgiving episode, but then we realize it's in the future. I remember there being a scene where Kevin says something to her like "Randall and I don't speak". I remember it quite clearly, but obviously that was not shown in this episode.

Ok wait. NOW I REMEMBER. Rebecca asks Kevin where Randall is, and he says they don't speak. So why did they not show that in this episode? I'm so bothered by this...haha.
  • anyone watch the most recent one yet?

Was there a new one this week? I watch on the PVR on the weekend because I cannot stay up lol
  • Yep, I think they skipped last week bc of election
  • Yup.  Finally something new to watch.  I'm curious to see more about Randall's Mom and her story.  Is she in Vietnam, the US, somewhere else?  How is she related to the kid, etc.

The actress who plays young Kate were has grown up in the last year.  She certainly doesn't look grade 8 anymore, but I guess that's going to happen with kids.

  • Same - very curious as to how the Vietnamese guy works into the story and the same thing as young Kate. She looks so much older now!

The stories about EDs with Madison and Kevin hit so close to home for me. I almost forgot that when we first met her, she was in an group with Kate and she got shit on for being thin.
