Wedding Woes

Recommendation Wednesday

Two questions.

Anyone know what to get my Dad for his 70th at the end of this month? Like, maybe a _____ of the month.  He doesn’t like beer, wine or beef jerky lol. I looked at man crates and I don’t think it’s in his age category.

Anyone have a work chair they love? Mine is either to low. To high. The arms swivel out. The back brake goes out., etc.  We bought all the chairs in unison when the office opened 500 years ago (giv or take) so everyone in here has the same chair. yet,I think I’m the only one who hates them with a fiery passion of a thousand suns.  I’m going to quietly bring in my own, even though they should pay for it. Amazon prime would be ideal.

I have a Herman Miller chair. Full disclosure it was paid for by my work and they let me bring in home for remote work. It’s pricey but it’s nice!

Thanks!  Searching now....Or maybe wait until March 2022, my new boss would approve it...
i should also add that a part of my problem is my low desk (nailed in at the cubicle wall). If my chair is to low, it hurts ALL my joints to get up. If it’s to high, i have to hunch over to type...also doesn’t help that I’m 5’11 1/2.. (fine, 6’0!)

  • Does your dad golf?  My dad got a golf-themed man crate for Christmas and he seemed to love it (he's mid 60's).

FWP, I have too many TV shows and podcasts to catch up on today. LOLLL

Otherwise, SSDD.  Just more bitching from me about how it's Not. Warm. Enough. Yet.  However, I will complain when it's 85+ and I'm sweating my ass off all summer.  Hee.

I have a Steelcase Leap v2 chair.  I was able to take it home from work.  Very pricy but comfortable.  I wish the seat was more padded.  No idea what happens if it needs repair or something now that I'm WFH.

Ah, yes.  My workplace had a similar strategy.  I've been working here for 8 years and they FINALLY bought some new chairs this last year.  It's still the same chair model.  But at least the dozens of broken down ones were replaced.

In the time I've worked here, I have twice had to go scrounging around vacant offices/cubes to find another chair because mine broke.  I would inform the admin. for our floor and that's what she told me to do, because they weren't going to order more chairs, lol.

Unfortunately, the only office chairs I've bought are for my H's computer desk at home.  He hasn't particularly cared for any of them.  And we have even bought them all in person.  But it's hard to say from sitting for a few minutes if a chair is going to be a good choice or not.  Alas, I don't have a recommendation for either of the things you are looking to buy.

Using Amazon to see all the reviews and then picking a chair that's highly rated would be my suggestion.  Though, with that said, I've bought a few items on Amazon that had high ratings and thousands of good reviews.  Only to order the item and find out it was terrible.  I become concerned about the opinion of the masses, in general.  Then I wonder if it is my own sanity I need to question.  And descend into existential angst.  At least until an Amazon order I like, arrives.

I don't have any suggestions because my current office might have those same chairs @CharmedPam lol! Now I'm wondering what I will have at my new job, hopefully better! I started thinking about getting a present or maybe just writing a note for my current boss who has been more like a mentor to me, any thoughts? I just want to thank them for all the guidance they have given me thus far in my career,

If you and your boss don't normally exchange gifts, like at holidays, I'd stick to just the note.  That sounds like an amazing thing to do because I'd think it would be really meaningful for them.

  • At work and hoping today goes better than the last two days. Although a few big things are happening today so maybe not. I’ve been trying to get more sleep to see if that will help. Jury is still out. Otherwise SSDD.

FI and I are debating what to do this weekend. I think it will be good for us to get out of our immediate area and have the day together. We’re debating if we should do the beach or our local wine country. We’ve been talking about heading down to the beach forever, but of course this weekend it’s going to be cool and mostly cloudy. We don’t even live that far. So we really have no excuse for picking the one weekend the weather might not be optimal.

  • *accidentally posted on Tuesday - deleted and brought here lmao*

Found out government has a new quarterly payment for parents with kids under 6. It's January, April, July and October. They're sending out a payment at the end of the month for the January/April payment, so we're pretty stoked.

M & I were saying with price of wood, we're going to set the October and January aside to build BK's bed. Since we likely have to build in pieces, we'll just build what we can with the money so we don't go beyond budget.
Paint isn't expensive, especially since I'm pretty sure we'll have extra left over from another project.

M & I are also trying to figure out about delivery of rocks for our yard. Likelihood the company will just put in the garage, so we'll have to drag them to the yard  Not looking forward to that. Although we have a dolly, so maybe we can use that.

My sciatica has been driving me nuts. Nothing is helping and I'm getting cranky about it.

    Vaccine today also!
  • @CharmedPam I have an Ikea chair that I like. I like that it stays locked in its settings.

Nothing much going on here. I have a work related dear Prudie that I'm trying to work through. I changed roles about 6 weeks ago. My new role is in a different but closely related department, so I'm working daily with a few people on my former team on some projects. I'm also supporting the launch of a new system that my former team is using, so part of my role is to help my former team learn to use the new system. My backfill wasn't put into place until about two weeks after I'd gone, so in transition I'd cross-trained a few of my former team and recorded a lot of video walk-throughs for my routine processes, but I also agreed that I'd find a few hours to fill the gaps once backfill was in place. I also knew that my backfill would have to finalize the processes under the new system, and planned to provide support there.

Now backfill is in place, and she's struggling to get up to speed. (FWIW, she's an internal hire, so should be relatively familiar with how to find things.) She's constantly coming back to me to ask questions about steps that are in the recordings, always asking me to check her work, and scheduling nearly daily meetings asking for training. When I do get on the phone with her, she whines that she's stupid or so lost. I feel bad for her to be thrown into a new role in the middle of so much change, but I'm also resenting that she's wasting my limited time looking for emotional support. I did mention both to her and my former manager that I thought she would benefit from trying to trouble shoot some issues on her own before scheduling training, but she's lacking confidence to try anything. I want her to do well and I want my former team to thrive, but I don't think it's my responsibility any longer to keep coaching her along at this level.

Any tips or advice for how I can help her without hand holding? This morning I decided to start answering every question with a question to force her to try to find things herself, but she thwarted that by responding that she doesn't know.
  • That’s so frustrating @MyNameIsNot. Could you preempt the daily meetings by scheduling weekly touch points and say that you can use that time to review but that unless it’s an emergency you can’t meet daily any more.

If other people have been cross-trained or there is video recordings I’d point her there. Maybe say “I think that’s in x video located in y folder, what questions do you have about what’s in there”? Trying to force the questions to be targeted to what’s already in there?

If she’s been in the role 4ish weeks now it’s time for her to start figuring things out on her own. If she’s taking too much of your time and she’s not responding to your tips to find the answer on your own I might go to your current manager and have them work with your former manager on the time split you have agreed to. If you all had agreed to 25% of your time and she’s asking for 75% of your time (and not getting that she needs to do things on her own) you may need to communicate up that they’re asking more than the original agreement and you may need to visit that agreement. My guess is your former
manager may need to step in and course correct that she needs to come to former manager, existing team, or the video trainings.

H bought the above chair last summer and has been loving it.  He is 6'2 and has a fairly low desk, so he likes that he can adjust the arms, back support, tilt, and overall height very easily depending on what he is doing.  Seems to have a lot of the function of some of the super expensive ones without being TOO outrageous.

ETA: he is super duper picky about posture and back health in general and is very quick to complain about anything that does properly support

Yes! @mrsconn23, he loves golfing. Let me look at golf membershipy things. He has all the accessories so doesn’t need anything like that. Yay @MissKittyDanger! How does that work? I don’t have kids, but see the articles on fb about the U.S. giving child tax breaks too - and again, I don’t read the articles or anything, but I LOVE the comments. People are saying this tax break, will have to be recorded or taken back next tax year. It’s basically a loan and some parents are like “can we opt out? This is going to eff up our 2021 taxes”. Again, I don’t read actual articles, the comments are great enough.

  • My H boarded up all the broken windows for the deadbeat tenant I was talking about yesterday.  That was our first experience buying wood during this lumber shortage.

Get this.  Pieces of plywood...PLYWOOD...were 50 bucks each!  Normally those pieces are $15 each.

Despite that, our out-of-pocket expenses will be less then what I was picturing.  I'd been roughly guessing the house had 10 windows.  But it actually has 8 and one of them hadn't been broken.  At least I'm saving $150 there on the replacement windows.  The other thing that was good is, because they were fairly new double-paned windows, most of them were not broken all the way through so it doesn't look like there was an water intrusion.

This was funny.  When I first looked up my receipt for when we had the windows installed in Nov., it said there were 14 windows.  So, all day, I was bummed out that it was more then I had been thinking.  But when I talked to my H last night, he reminded me we had replaced all the windows for that duplex.  As such, 14 windows included the other unit and those windows were fine.  Oh yeah!

Other then that, just trudging along at work.  I don't have much to do, so I'm trying to fend of boredom by doing my taxes and then I want to apply for the SBA's EID loan.  I knew they had opened that back up.  They e-mailed me today that they have opened a special "targeted" advance.  If it is like the one they did last year, it's more like a grant and doesn't need to be paid back.  The main item, the actual loan, does.  Though the interest rate is only 1%.  The advance is up to $15K in additional money to the loan.

I guess I'm not really "fending off boredom", lol.  But I am using this slow boring time to complete onerous tasks, in tandem.

  • Here I am, about to go heat up my lunch, wondering why Prudie hasn't posted yet.

It's Thursday, right?  (despite the title for this post).  I look at my calendar and dejectedly say, "Oh."

  • @CharmedPam So idk how it is in the states, but we get a monthly amount and it's based on the previous year's tax return.
Once you have child, you fill out a form and the hospital, nurse, etc sending to CRA {Canada Revenue Agency}, they update it and as long as you're up to date with filing, you get the monthly amount right away.
So now I get the monthly amount, plus a quarterly amount for BK.
It's not a huge amount, but it's income based so more kids and/or low income you get more.
It's basically to help offset things for the child.

@MyNameIsNot I'm glad you had the opportunity to chat with the new-ish employee's boss about her independent work ability, that sounds really frustrating.
    @MissKittyDanger yay for the vaccine
@CharmedPam what are your father's hobbies?  I usually get my dad something kayaking or hiking-related.  I don't have any __ of the month boxes recs unfortunately.

I'm off from work tomorrow for Eid but my kids aren't.  I'm still leaving the house at my usual time to have my regularly scheduled time away from STBXH, going to head to my parents' house to spend some time with my mom...I honestly can't remember the last time I've spent one-on-one time with her.  No kids, no siblings, just us

  • @MyNameIsNot, how scary is the gas shortage in GA right now?

@CharmedPam and I are flying into Atlanta on Saturday, picking up the rental car, and then driving to Savannah for the first part of our trip.  I'm HOPING the rental car is already filled and we won't have to gas up again until we return to Atlanta on Wednesday.  But I'm not sure we can bet on that, all things considered.

Hearing about gas running out and all these long lines in the East and Southeast has me freaking out a bit!

I normally don't recommend living in a state that is filled with refineries, ***cough, Louisiana, cough**.  But at times like these it is nice to have it handy and get our gas "fresh off the vine", lol.

I got my dad a fancy pants wood jigsaw puzzle for the last gift.

I DID get cleared for my 2nd shot! And got it! And I'm past the feeling like shit part and my hives are almost better.

We still have the kiddo home because fuck if I'm sending her for high stakes testing this year.

The mr. Has hernia surgery next week, which should be inconvenient
  • @short+sassy, TBH, I have no idea. I haven't left the house since Sunday, and I haven't needed gas in a couple of weeks because I never go anywhere.

I will say I haven't seen anything in local news (although I normally only check local news once in the morning). My friends aren't talking about it.
  • I just found out about amazingclubs.com.  There’s a customizable one, seasonal, so he gets something everything 3 months. First quarter is lobster! Because you don’t turn 70 every year.  And then the other 3 pkg’s will be FAR less inexpensive lol.  I like that you can customize to your budget.

Thanks for the info!  That doesn't sound as bad as the stories I've been seeing.  Though those seemed like they were mainly in the Carolinas.

I checked out the Georgia Sun and it said yesterday there aren't shortages yet, but I saw on Gas Buddy there are a lot of stations out of gas in ATL.  But not all of them, so at least there is that.  I also read your all's governor put in an executive order that temporarily suspended taxes on gas to help mitigate the prices going up and other measures to keep price gouging from happening.

Which, imho, I'm not sure is wise.  He's telling people not to "panic buy gas".  But then lowers the gas price by about 20 cents/gallon by temporarily removing the state taxes on it.

I did another search on Gas Buddy for the ATL to Savannah route.  There was more gas availability, roughly 50% of the stations on that route have gas.  Including a Costco off the freeway about one hour outside of ATL.  I hadn't thought about warehouse clubs.  But I have both a Costco and Sam's membership, so that might be helpful if gas is still scarce when we need it.
