Italy Vow Renewal?

Hey everyone! My husband and I are planning a vow renewal for autumn of 2022. We got married in our small town’s post office in five minutes, and never had a celebration after or shared it with anyone bc we are pretty young and there was a LOT of drama. My family didn’t think I deserved a “real wedding”, as they said. Now, we have the funds and opportunity to give ourselves a real wedding, so we’re looking at a destination vow renewal in Italy. Basically a micro wedding, with the dress and the food, and photos. Husband and I are more focused on the vows and that moment, then the dinner with everyone together than we are about any dancing and traditional stuff. His family is on board, but mine has told me it’s a big inconvenience for others since we’re already married. I don’t want to be alone on this special day, but I don’t want outside opinions to ruin it either! What do I do??

I think you plan the vow renewal that you and your husband want, invite who you genuinely would want there and ignore people’s opinions about your plans (better yet- don’t tell them what you’re planning!) Your family isn’t paying and they don’t have to come if they don’t want to. It’s disappointing they’re not more supportive but focus on what matters- renewing your vows, treating your guests to a lovely dinner, & enjoying your time together.
  • Your vow renewal in Italy sounds fantastic.  And, while your family shouldn't be side-eying your choice, you also need to keep in mind that traveling abroad is a BIG ASK.  It's expensive and chews up a lot of vacation time, for people who work.  If they don't want to do it, then they don't want to do it and you all need to accept that.  It is totally understandable and you all shouldn't pressure them.

But then the next question is if you all want to plan an Italy vow renewal if none/most of your family won't be there.  Only you can answer that question for yourself.

FWIW, I would never go to a vow renewal in another country, unless that was also a vacation I really wanted to go on.
