How to host a shower for two coaches on our team for kids and families to attend

Hello! I would like to host a wedding/couples shower for a couple, both of whom are coaches for our youth swim team. Obviously, they can’t invite the entire swim team and their families to the wedding, so I was wanting to have an event where swimmers and their families can come and offer best wishes, bring a gift, etc.  But I am stuck on what to do and how to do it.  Does anyone have any thoughts on how to do this without being tacky?  I was thinking of an open house of some kind?

  • Don't overthink it - but logistically you also need to consider what rules the coaches are required to follow in regard to extracurricular gatherings and their coaching contract.  A team shower/post wedding congrats BBQ at the local park or a community center where the venue is about as public as it gets is a good idea and can be flexible for who does/doesn't attend as not all families will be able to.  Traditionally showers are for those invited, and it's a unique situation because no one expects coaches/teachers to invite their athletes, some workplaces have a work gathering/luncheon/potluck for such occasions, so it's a "how it's done" type thing in keeping it casual..  In my sport, something like a post-training meet-up for dinner is something I've also seen done the emphasis being on if anything a group gift or just having dinner together to celebrate sans gifts.
  • I think an open house or team BBQ/picnic is the way to go in this instance. I think when it is a group like a sports team or co-workers want to get together to honor the couple the etiquette about who is invited to the event is a bit different, especially where a bunch of teenagers or children are the connecting factor. My daughter and SIL worked with their church youth group when they got married. The youth group couldn't be invited to the wedding, the kids gave them a small shower anyway.
  • I would also do a team event such as a casual BBQ, picnic or open house, with the emphasis on it being a team celebration but where the team members and their family members who attend can congratulate the coaches.
