Food truck wedding- Maryland

What venues are good for food truck weddings in MD? Preferably in/close to Baltimore county or city.
Our wedding is early 2023, so we won’t book yet but it’s difficult finding even ideas for places that allow outside catering let alone would work with a food truck. TIA!

Re: Food truck wedding- Maryland

  • I'd start to look at this on FB or local boards.  There's not a lot of traffic on the international forums.

Word of advice: if you'll do a food truck wedding you'll need several and they'll need a lot of prepared options if the goal is for your guests to eat that the same time.
  • My brother had his wedding reception at Patapsco (the Hilton area) at a shelter (because COVID), and the food for their small wedding was a food truck that was able to set up onsite. They decorated and it was lovely.

I'm not sure what you mean by "early" 2023, but if it's not going to be pleasant outdoors yet, I'm not sure why you'd have people need to approach a food truck outdoors.
  • One other issue with food trucks: they normally work by having customers stand on line next to the trucks and receiving their food and drinks through a window.

That works okay at a casual wedding where guests can stand on line comfortably for some relatively short period of time, receive their food, drinks, and utensils and then carry them to the eating area.

It won't work well if guests have to stand in long lines in an uncovered area exposed to the weather while dressed up, especially if any of the guests have physical issues that make this medically unsafe for them. You and your vendors would need to plan for service directly to guests who can't stand on line and for means of minimizing line waits and providing protection from the elements for other guests.
  • It’s going to be the very end of March. We want a food truck as we’ve always wanted one, but like you said the weather may not be great so we may just have them come and do something buffet style instead!

Depending on where you are I wouldn't do a food truck wedding in March if the guests have to go outside for their food.  What I've seen successful is when the food truck shows up for extra fun things like coffees or ice cream.  Even when it was an ice cream truck there's a wait and that kind of hinders the concept of a meal time when you know some guests will be finished as others are just starting.

My in laws just went to a wedding where they had a good truck and they hated it. They had to wait in line, they had to walk from the truck to the table carrying all their food, they weren’t eating at the same time as other people. For a real small crowd it could work but for any sizable group it seems like a logistical headache.

For venues, you'll probably have more luck if you look outside he box of normal wedding venues, since most event spaces have catering or preferred caterers. Instead, look into renting out a museum space, brewery, park, or other non-traditional spaces.

But agree with others, if you're doing food truck as your primary meal, you need to have multiple trucks and work with them to ensure most dishes are pre-made. Even a smallish guest list of 50 people will quickly overwhelm the average truck, leaving long lines and staggered dining.
  • I don't mean to yuck your yum, but as hosts, you shouldn't make people work for their food. Even if you are paying for wonderful food trucks, having to stand in line to order and then schlep your cardboard container back to your table is work.

And some of the folks who are mobility-challenged will have to recruit other people to get their food for them, and those other people will then have to balance their own food, along with that of their elderly friends/family. Parents will be standing there with their indecisive kids trying to order, and it will not be fun.

I'm a huge fan of food trucks in the right setting (office buildings, fairs, festivals, breweries, the north shore of Oahu), but for a wedding? Please make this easier on your guests.
  • We've decided to have the food truck there- but have them bring it to us in a buffet style. We're looking at one that's a mobile pizza oven, so if people want to go and check it out, they're welcome to without being forced to. They're experienced in weddings (all the ones we're looking at are) and know how to make it fun and not stressful for all of us.
  • Yep, totally understandable! We've decided to have them do buffet style so nobody has to worry about those annoying things, but they'll still be there for all to see! Hopefully (fingers crossed) we will be able to get the 'mobile pizza oven' so it'll be fun but also we will have plenty of food available come meal time without the annoying waiting.
