Registering for separate items vs a set

FI and I finally registered at our first store over the weekend at BB&B. Regarding pots and pans, we are totally torn about whether we should register for the full 10 piece set of the pots we want, which totals $649 which seems crazy expensive, or registering for the items in the 10 piece set individually, where each pot comes out to around $120-ish each. The clerk who was helping us suggested that we register for BOTH the set and the individual pieces and that way if someone does end up giving us the 10 piece set we can always return the individual pieces later if people also get us those. My only concern is that when people look at our registry, it will look greedy or at least overly indulgent to have such an expensive item and then in addition so many individual pieces. What is the norm??? Thanks in advance.

Some people do group gifts and might pitch in to buy the set. I already knew that a group gift for one of my showers would be all of my fine china, so I broke the cookware up into individual pieces rather than the set.

I've never understood the point of putting both the set and individual pieces on a registry. If someone wanted to buy all your cookware, they could do so from the individual pieces. I'd either put the set on there or put the individual pieces, not both.

I'd prob do individual pieces also. Then you can return them and buy the set.

We did individual pieces for two reasons. 1. the price was really high and 2. we knew we wouldn't use a couple of those that were included in the set. We ended up registering for some nonstick and some stainless. We didn't receive all of them so we purchased what was left with our completion discount (and cash gifts we received at the reception).

Is there a smaller set of the same cookware? If so, you could register for the smaller set, plus some individual pieces. The cookware we wanted is available in an 8pc set and 12 pc set. We registered for the 8pc set, along with additional pieces from that same line not included in the 8pc set. We thought we'd be more likely to get a $200 set plus a few $50-$75 pieces than a larger $350 set.

We actually put both on our Macys registry for one reason - the completion discount. We figured the majority of guests wouldn't want to splurge for the whole set, but that if we don't get all of the individual pieces, we can return those and apply the credit towards the full set (cheaper than individual), and since it's on our registry, we can use the completion discount to get it after the wedding. I just check every once in a while; on the off chance someone does buy the set, or most of the individual pieces get bought, I'll update it.

I've heard to do individual pieces that way it is more affordable and gives your guests more gifts to choose from on your registry BUT I registered for the 12pc caphlon set which is about $500+ (my dream cookware set, hey it's a registry, why not go all out on a couple things). Well, it was fulfilled last week! I say go with your gut and don't think just because it's a set people won't get it for you. Good luck!

We didn't registry for any pot sets. I didn't know what was the norm either. But they seemed too pricey for me and I didn't want to have anything too expensive on our registry. So we got a few individual pieces. If you get the individual pieces on the registry, it'll give people a chance to get you pots without dropping too much, then you can go back and buy whatever is left to complete the piece.

You know your family though... if you put the set is there someone you know would buy it (like an aunt or your mom or both). We put a comforter set on our registry, which is the most expensive item we have on there, and I know either fmil or ffil will buy it.

Oh wanted to add that I registered for individual utensils (spoons, forks, etc) and then a set. The pieces are cheaper than the set, but wwe wanted people to have options.

For pots/pans and knives, we registered for a lot of individual pieces. I plan on returning some of the individual pieces and using the credit for the set. I think registering for individual pieces give people more flexibility and it doesn't look you into the specific pieces that come with the set.

My mom and I bought my best friend's pot set for her and it cost more or less what you said. As first poster said a group of people could chip in and buy them. And with BB&B's 20% coupon they can save over $100 on them. Only you can know if your friends and fam would buy you the set or not.
