Weekend was meh. Skipped the wine/chocolate tasting but did end up seeing Candy Man on Sunday.

I bought a Hisense TV on the 4th and was watching 9 Perfect Strangers over the weekend. I complained to my friend how they went all “artsy” and the filming was done over a dark hue filter but when they did night shots it was so hard to see, sometimes just black. She told me she didn’t get that. I tested more shows on hulu. For whatever reason my TV has a dark shaded hue in daylight scenes and almost pitch black in dark ones - ONLY ON HULU ORIGINALS!! Weird right? The adverts go back to normal color, and all the other hulu shows done on different networks are ok. All other streaming channels are OK. I changed the generic screen setting to “brighter. Bright. And Normal” and re-tried them all. All settings had that dark hue, and only on the hulu originals. I can’t see where I could change settings on the individual shows? I think I’m going to have to return the TV before my time is up (30 days I think).

What a weekend!!

Friday I ended up staying home. We're out of kibble and Angel is basically a Karen because he keeps speaking to the manager {aka me} and basically kept me up 90% of the night.
BK's last day of daycare and daycare's retirement party went well. The girls BK played with before ended up going. Older one said "oh, she talks more!" when she saw BK lmao! {who also had to give hugs}
BK was is proper form lol - aka being very 3 - so M & I had to do mad dashes to catch her because there is a pool. Daycare was saying BK never does this when it's just them

Saturday BK went to my mum's. That was good because my mum also took my granny out.
M & I went for dinner, then the mall. I got clothes, and M bought me "Ori and the blind forest" game for Nintendo Switch as a late bday gift.
We got BK's crib out and the mattress in.
Whew what a change!

She was very excited and unsurprisingly, slept well. No nap at my mum's.

Sunday she didn't nap but also didn't leave her bed, so that was good.

Today was a big day.

Andplusalso M & I decided we're going to do the kitchen reno
We're going to borrow against the house, BUT we aren't doing it until our own loans are paid, we have a new washer {and maybe dryer?} and a new couch.

We figure that since the kitchen reno can up the house value, we can justify doing loan against house. Rest we cannot justify putting a loan against house {credit card debt, couch, etc}

@CharmedPam, ugh! I hate doing returns.

I got my Costco scanning gig done over the weekend. We also bought our own generator. There was just too good of a deal to pass up. It's 7500W...which is 3x larger than the one we borrowed from our friend. It will probably run our entire house, plus the fridge and one a/c window unit for our tenant side. It can also run on multiple fuel sources...gasoline, natural gas, or propane. We wanted one that ran on natural gas...though those generators are usually twice as much, so it was a bonus to find one for only $900 that can also use gasoline. Gasoline is a much more efficient fuel source, but can be hard to come by when the power is out city-wide.

Then we vegged out, starting Saturday afternoon.

We leave for NYC on Wednesday! I need to make a tentative itinerary of what we want to do, see, and where we want to eat. I know there was bad flooding after Hurricane Ida, but I wasn't able to find anything about what it is currently like in the city. I'm hoping there aren't a bunch of places shut down.

Just trudging through today and tomorrow.

Weekend was busy.

Friday night DH took Chiquito to a meet and greet with the local pack so the kiddo could join scouts. DH is an Eagle so this is a group near and dear to him and we hope Chiquito loves it too.

Saturday we talked a bit to Chiquita about the day and what it meant. Chiquito had his first soccer practice and I hung out at home w/ a cold (it's definitely a cold and I even had a PCR test to confirm it isn't the cold symptoms of Covid). I scrubbed my shower which is not glamorous but at least it looks better. We ended the day at the marina with a boat ride and dinner. By the night I was exhausted and we geared up for yesterday.

Sunday was mass, church picnic and Chiquita's first soccer game which was a 40 minute ride to a different town. At the game DH mentioned that his mom talked to him about his brother's vaccination status and how neither he nor SIL are vaccinated. I told DH that the only way I'd potentially be OK with them visiting in that state is if they took a PCR test that was negative and isolated after testing. I'm not sure what this means for some upcoming family events but I'm going to do my best to back away and shower DH with praise and love knowing he's in a difficult position.

This week is the last week before religious class kicks in. Soon we'll have two nights of soccer practice and one night of religious ed instruction plus a soccer practice and a game on the weekends.

Especially with Covid and the restrictions it brings on activities I'm glad the kids have the sports to get them outside and I need to figure out how to balance that.

Yup @MissKittyDanger that’s what I did for my semi-reno/me reno. I borrowed on my house. Don’t regret it either!
@short+sassy yes a generator for your neck of the woods is a good investment. Here’s to hoping you have a good vaca and things are open.

returns are the worst, but it’s a roku tv so it means I have to re download everything on the new one too. I hate remembering passwords and logins and shit.

@CharmedPam Did you? My mum didn't even consider it until we mentioned we were now thinking about it. Any of their renos weren't expensive enough to consider that as a possibility. IL's were saying since ours is relatively low {like 12K} that it's worth talking to the bank.
It's on our last option of 2022 since we have some other things that we need to do first. Do I regret painting my counters? Still nope. We are holding off on paining kitchen though since we assume we're doing the reno.

That's so weird about the TV.

Had a fun weekend. Colored and cut 3 inches from my hair this weekend. It feels so short! Then drove in to Brooklyn to see my friend. Went out to dinner Saturday night. All in all, a good weekend.

I think that needs the help of the NYC knotties like @climbingsingle and @ei34. We weren't hit as bad as NYC but for our area the spots that were affected on Thursday were mostly improved by Thurs night and definitely by the weekend because the flood waters receded. That said, all the rivers around here are still high and our forecast has rain in it through Saturday so maybe avoid downtown Subway stations?

I remember a friend telling me that a friend of hers got engaged in the West 4th Subway station about 16 years ago or so and it was disgusting back then.

Morning. Long weekend was good. We actually got a lot done around the house and it's nice to have a clean-ish home.

Our kickoff party was great. Everyone seemed to have fun. We had a good crowd and a few people we haven't seen since the beginning of Covid, which was awesome.

Speaking of Covid, DefConn's PCR came back negative. But because his nurse said he was symptomatic last Tuesday, he can't go back until Friday (end of 14 day quarantine). His symptoms were related to seasonal allergies and treated with OTC meds (per normal) . I have to get him a doctor's note to allow him to go back to school, but he's never been seen for allergies. I've always alternated Zyrtec for the day and Benadryl at night (if needed) and that's worked. So IDK what to do. I'm going to call the nurse line at our doctor's office and see what they say.

We did have to tell my dad that we're not able to go to Mexico with his friends and him in March. It's a long story, but dad wanted us all to go down there because it's where he and mom vacationed, but only with their friends. Furthermore, both my BIL's got new jobs where they cannot travel in late March/early April (accounting and my other BIL works for a beverage company and their big summer shelf space planning and set up occurs over about 4 weeks in mid-March through mid-April) ANDPLUSALSO, sister hasn't adopted foster nephew and the court has been silent on her passport request. It sucks, but when we started thinking about this trip we had no idea all of our husbands were going to start new jobs in the last 3 months. Additionally, this is his thing with his friends. We were never involved or invited when mom was alive (which didn't bother any of us).

Speaking of, DH started his new job today. I've texted a few emojis with him, but I'm sure onboarding is keeping him quite busy. I cannot wait to hear about it all and get his thoughts and feelings.

I did book my other Mexico trip this weekend for the end of January. I cannot wait to go with my BFF's. Hilariously, they're both like, "I'm packing books!' LMAO But one is a SAHM and the other is getting divorced from her terrible ex, so I'm not judging how they want to spend their uninterrupted time.

I'll definitely have some books too.

SSDD. So glad work is easing off the craziness.

I know I've mentioned this many times, so pardon the repetition, lol. But I'm a huge fan of Home Equity Lines of Credit. I think everyone who has equity in their house should have one...if nothing else, for emergencies....as long as the people are fiscally responsible. Depending on the bank, they're either free or a fairly low cost to set one up. They're typically good for 10 years and don't usually have an annual fee.

If you don't have a balance, there is no interest charged. They are super flexible. If there is a balance, there is a minimum payment that is a small % of the balance. But you can also pay them down as fast as you want with no penalty. The interest rate is low. Typically a little higher than a primary mortgage, but in that ball park.

@short+sassy I'm paying it off, but I have a line of credit that was emergencies {paying off a/c company now - and was to be j.i.c for any emerg vet visits}
We never really considered a h.e.l.o.c because we always thought if we borrow from house, it goes back to the house. {but we didn't think h.e.l.o.c originally}

We wanna pay off certain debts before doing it - so we're not adding more to our plates

I'm tired of home ownership!

Got a new (to me) kitchen table and chairs yesterday - finally. Put my feet on one of the cross bars on the bottom of the chair this morning and it cracked. Tried to mow today and the mower won't work - I think the carbuerator needs cleaned from what I googled but damn if I know how to do that. My dad changed the spark plug last week and got it going and I feel bad having him to try fix this part now too but idk what else to do. Google tells me I have to take it apart. Nope. Part of the appeal of this house was it came with lots of household stuff, tools, etc but pretty much everything sucks and I'm having to replace it anyway

I'm just outside the city now but Queens was hit way harder by Ida than Manhattan. The city seems business as usual at least from my cousins'/friends' who live their social media posts. @short+sassy just have proof of your vaccine bc the city's vaccination policy begins today. My school district started their mandatory weekly Covid testing today- the only way out of it is to be fully vaccinated. Loving overhearing the 5% of anti-vaxxers on staff complain

Weekend was...nice(?) being able to treat Sept 11th the way it deserves to be treated. I don't like pushing personal things but my dad has taken years writing a book about a fallen firefighter he was working with that day, Daniel Suhr. It finally came out in August, I'll share the link in case anyone is interested.

@short+sassy which part of the city are you staying in?

I haven't heard of any areas being shut down still, or closed off. I did drive down the Westside highway on my way to Brooklyn, and on the FDR Drive on my way home, and all seemed normal. The worst of the flooding was really in the boroughs, like the Bronx and Queens. My company makes deliveries to all areas of the NY and I haven't heard of any issues getting through to anywhere.

@ei34 and @climbingsingle, thanks for the info! Our hotel is in Hell's Kitchen, so it sounds like we should be all right. Thanks for the reminder about our vaccine cards. Yeesh, I think I would have forgotten about that now that my proof of vaccination is digitally on a state-run app...that I'm guessing other states may not recognize.

Congratulations to your dad for finishing his book and having it published. I can't imagine how tough it was for him to live through and then write about. It sounds really interesting.

@MissKittyDanger We are thinking of doing the same thing next year! Our mortgage is up next June, so we'll refinance and take the money out so we can redo the kitchen. It does depend on when we can find cupboards - we've been trying to find used ones at the restore near us. Every once in a while one becomes available that fits the layout of our kitchen, but we haven't been ready for the reno when they come.

Fall events are finally happening, and a friend and I were hoping to go to a drive-through pumpkin event. I invited another friend and we found out that he isn't vaccinated. Neither I or my friend are really comfortable being in a car for three hours with someone we can't social distance from (the event is 40 minutes away, and the drive-through portion is about an hour). Now I have the joy of rescinding my invitation.

My weekend was fun - hubby really enjoyed his birthday. He likes it to be low-key and it was.

I know price of lumber was a huge issue for awhile. I haven't heard much since, but hopefully yours doesn't have issues!

We had to resign our mortgage last year and didn't even consider asking/thinking about it lmao!

Our friend who helped my H pick up the generator is vaccinated but, apparently he refused to wear a mask, so Costco (UNDERSTANDABLY) would not allow him to enter. Whatever, dude.

He waited 30+ minutes in the truck, while my H ran in to buy it and then waited in a humongous line (it went all the way to the back of the store, but did move quickly).

I asked my H how does this friend do anything? Because there is a strict mask mandate in the city and you can't walk into any store/restaurant/etc. without wearing a mask. But my H didn't know. Maybe he wears a mask when he absolutely needs to walk in somewhere, but avoids going out in public otherwise. I dunno. People are weird (and sometimes nonsensical).

This is the same guy who won't show his proof of vaccination on principle, so now he can't go to restaurants and bars anymore.

Not sure about Canada, @MissKittyDanger but my parents just re-did my wooden gate door over the weekend and said the prices were lowering on lumber in the U.S.
i wanted to get my deck done too, and they said it was a case of replacing a few boards and staining it and I have a few more years on it. Cool. Cool.

@short+sassy I might be one of those people that "refuses" to show proof of vaccination, lol. We are getting the vaccine password, which I am fine with, but apparently it's an app that you have to download on to your phone. My phone is old and does not have data, and I don't see how this is possible with it. I will buy a bracelet, I will carry a physical card with me at all times, but I am not getting a phone with data! I will drag my heels on that as long as I possibly can!

And then I'll get a phone with data and probably love it, but my phone bill is just so, so low and I love not spending tonnes of money a month on a phone.

That's okay! It doesn't have to be the app. That's an optional way that's handy for people who prefer it, especially since the digital driver's license or state ID is on the same app.

But the physical card is also fine to show proof of vaccination. Or a negative COVID test taken within the last 72 hours.

It's so weird on house stuff because I had a house on my own for 7 years (well 5 before I knew him) and did stuff on my own, though I admit I was more of "ignore it until I have no choice" but I've gotten so used to having help and someone basically to do it all the last 9 years that it's like F*&$ I don't want to have to do this stuff myself again. My poor dad is getting dragged into a bunch - well really he volunteers. Unfortunately he isnt very handy so he can't do a lot of what I need but that's OK at least there is someone for support
