Wedding Woes

Is this thing on?

*knock, knock*

Happy Thursday!!

Because I am a giant baby, I need sound machine recs.  LOL  But for real, since we had our fans off and no heat/ac running, it's way too quiet in the middle of the night.  So I need to find something, especially when DH is off days and on his new shift.

In other things, after 21 years...my work e-mail address is changing because of corporate BS.  Lame.

Prudie coming up.

Re: Is this thing on?

  • I’m here! This week has been wildly busy and I’m dragging. I’m trying not to be ungrateful about this promotion but I’m so ready to leave it feels like they’re doing this just so I stay. Which okay great but it’s not what I want. Still waiting to hear back from other interviews and meetings this week.

    The weather finally feels like fall and I’m so glad!!

  • @mrsconn23, everything off because it’s that time of the year where you don’t need anything on? Wish my house waa like that! It’s one or the other and I’m thinking tonight will be the heat.

    It's definitely the time of year.  We have everything off.  We could turn on the heat, but DH downright refuses (as do I, but I'll hold out on heat longer than him).  But during the winter I think I'm going to need something because when the heat kicks off, it will still be very quiet.

    But it's going back to the mid-80's a few days next week, so the air will be back on.  Ha.
  • We have a Google sound bar in the room and tell it to play white noise in the winter.

  • Morning!  I am back in the office today and it's still weird.  Almost too quiet and it's hard to focus and get back in the swing of staring at my computer all day.  H and I unfortunately came down with G's stomach thing and have been out of commission the last 2 days.  What a way to come back from 12 weeks away *eye roll*.  All good today, no COVID, and everyone is back at school/work.

    Now we're trying to figure how the heck to get ourselves and 2 kids ready and fed and to school/work by 8ish am.  Going to the office is really a pain in the butt.

    Loving this weather though.

    @charlotte989875 I hope you hear back about job stuff soon, definitely seems like they're throwing $$ at you to get you to stay!
    @NBSquared2017 good luck to your H!!
  • Today is my Friday also. We're going to Kentucky this weekend to see family. For a few minutes there, I thought I was going to have to end the week without Prudie, but glad the login issues are solved.

    Weather is perfect here too. It's 60 and sunny right now, but will be mid 70s later. I want to turn off the AC and open the windows, but with the construction going on I feel like I should leave at least the fan or the whole house will just be a dust cloud.

    Tentative congrats, @charlotte989875, but I hope it's a springboard to something better.

    Vibes @NBSquared2017!
  • That sounds like a fun surprise @CharmedPam
    I keep my ceiling fan on until the heat and its noise starts @mrsconn23 bc I desperately need background noise too!  Watching others recs, thanks for asking.

    My sister (due in February) didn't have the greatest 20 week ultrasound last week and she's currently having a 2-hour specialized cardiac ultrasound to rule out some serious conditions.  So I'm feeling distracted at work :/
  • BK was fine halfway through the day yesterday and hasn't had a runny nose in nearly 24hrs {with no allergy meds} and definitely feeling herself. M said she was tired still and had a good nap, but otherwise fine.
    Confirmed with prek about sending her today, and they said it's fine since nothing lasted long enough to be a worry.

    It's rainy a.f for the next few days, so I had to send BK in splash pants. We walked across parking lot splashing in the little puddles in the pavement cracks.
    My mum picked up a car seat - mostly for winter use - but it's a good thing because they're calling for thunderstorms this week now.

    Did I mention my mum likely has skin cancer?
    We aren't worried because likely caught early and having them burnt. Need confirmation with dermatologist still.
    I told her any important appts, I want to attend instead of her bf {sorry, but I get priority} but it also is good they got a carseat for BK because although it's ok to bus there, depending on timeframe driving is better.

    I slept funny last night so now I have a kink in my neck and a headache ... extra coffee day and I picked up a gatorade to help with extra hydration in case that's a slight factor.
    {I basically subsist on caffeine now ....}

    Side note, has anyone started thinking of xmas gifts?
    Need help with ideas :\ I'm definitely thinking lowkey but stuck.

    Couples gifts - help!
    I need help with 4 couples specifically
    IL's
    BIL & SIL
    Aunt & Uncle
    Cousin & GF
  • Woo hoo!  For the first time since probably March or April, we didn't need to put the a/c on when we went to bed last night.

    For anyone who would like a laugh at how inept and ridiculous CEOS of major corporations can be, there is a lot of fodder for that locally right now:

    There is a garbage crisis in NOLA right now.  It was a problem before the hurricane and now it is just exacerbated.  At my house, garbage hasn't been picked up since August 20th.  Over a month ago and over a week before the storm hit.  While we were out of town, there was a "garbage parade".  People dressed up like trash and protested at City Hall.

    There was a City Council meeting open to the public on the 17th.  The CEO for the company who has the trash contract stated that every home had been visited at least once since the storm...that's been their party line all along.  Right after he said that and in the middle of his statement, a resident stood up and called him a LIAR.  She went on to say that neither her nor anyone else on her block have had their trash picked up since the storm.  F**k yeah!  In a statement made later, CEO Trashguy said he may have been "mistaken" because he was going off reports he had received the previous Thursday.

    Their other party line is that the problem is staffing.  That is true.  But then they delve into alternate realities again and claim they can't find employees, even though they pay standard industry wages.  That's another lie.  They pay the people collecting the trash $11 (and change)/hour, when the national average is more like $18/hour.  They pay the drivers...who need to have a commercial driver's license...$17 (and change)/hour.  The national average is more like $25/hour.

    -------------------

    On other City Council gaffes by CEOs, our energy company (Entergy) has come under fire also for not properly maintaining their lines/equipment, which exacerbated the power outages and also means they are now going to charge users for their "storm recovery" costs.  The CEO left the meeting, once it was turned over to public comments.  She returned 45 minutes later because she'd been told she needed to return for the public comments.  Her excuse was she is "new" and didn't realize she was supposed to stay for public comments.  OMG, LMAO.  I'm sorry someone had to tell your elitist ass, you're supposed to pretend you care about the commoners.  But I understand it can be hard to remember that when you work for a monopoly who could care less about customers who have no choice but to use them.

    And then the plot thickens.  A City Council person (Moreno) has been calling for an audit on Entergy, in regards to the lack of maintenance that led to all the power problems.  She has also called for the regulatory agency (I think she's on it) to limit how much of the storm recovery costs they can get from customers.  She received an e-mail from them containing tons of internal communication where Entergy was talking amongst themselves about different strategies they might take if NOLA continues to be difficult and cuts into their profits.  They retracted the e-mail shortly after they sent it, but it was too late.  Some people are conjecturing they did it on purpose to be a threat.  Moreno posted all of it on Twitter and made fun of them, lol.

  • @banana468 Hmmm, BIL & SIL I could do a drink. {rest I can't do alcohol for varying reasons}
    What did you do for your kids at 3? Do I go likes? {Frozen & Bluey are pretty heavy likes - along with Mickey}
  • Fingers crossed for your H! @NBSquared2017

    Congrats on the promotion! @charlotte989875. I hope you’re able to use it to leverage to where you want to be.

    I’m sorry you and your family are going through that @ei34. Sending good vibes.

    have fun on your trip! @CharmedPam

    You all are monsters who need sound during sleep. I want absolute silence and complete darkness. And preferably no fan, although in the summer that’s impossible.

    I’m at work and happy there’s only today and tomorrow left. I woke up from a weird dream this morning. An evil witch turned me into a pillow. I have no idea what that’s supposed to mean. I guess it’s Halloweeny?

    Otherwise SSDD. We’re short staffed and that’s just how it is. *sigh* Hike tonight and trying to get the house back to normal post trip.

  • I don't have a noise machine, but I do have an app on my phone called Relax Melodies that I use sometimes. All sorts of sounds, and you can layer them too.

    SSDD. It's gross and muggy today and we're supposed to get a ton of rain today and tomorrow. Blah.
  • For Christmas this year for people outside immediate family and very close friends I actually want to buy gifts for I am either doing nothing or, if they typically give me a gift, homemade jam or cookies. For friends I’m mostly doing a Christmas ornament tailored to their interests plus a cookie plate.

    edible all the way here too ^

    I also agree with the rest that edible is the way to go.  I know too many who watch the diet but you can go with plenty of options.

    At 3 it varied but IMO I'm more inclined to go to basics: trains, blocks, dinosaurs, magnatiles are all good.
  • I'll have to run edible route depending - BIL & SIL are pescatarian {eat only seafood as meat} & cousin's gf has allergy but might still be doable {I know a few places that are safe for her}

    I'm sure worse case scenario, there are gift cards for places.

    @banana468 we did magnatiles last year :) I could do another small set. I've got a few things I'm seeing recently she likes {playdoh is slowly getting bigger}

    More magnatiles are great!  Lego are also fantastic.  For a 3yo start w/ Duplo and get a big brick plus a square base.  Additional things that are great are an easel and markers/crayons.  At that age we also liked foam bathtub letters because we practiced letters with the kids in the tub.    And at the 3 yo age first remote control cars are also fun if you have the area that they can be used.

    I'm not a big AC person, so I think we had the AC on all of maybe a week and a half altogether this year?  We're pretty lucky where we are - lots of trees, good breeze.  I try to avoid turning on the heat, but usually the first week or so of October it is heat time.  I haven't even switched up to the heavier blanket yet though, so no heat until that happens!

    For the noise though, we live close to a busy highway, so there is always the noise of cars going by.  I no longer know what quiet would sound like.  Sometimes I miss living in the country ...

  • @ei34 Oh no, that's very scary.  I hope everything ends up okay!

    @MissKittyDanger I've also started thinking about Christmas.  We only really have to buy for MIL and SIL, but SIL just recently started dating someone.  We will meet him at Thanksgiving, so .... if the relationship is still happening by Christmas we will have to buy for him.  I like edible or experiences for gifts, depending on the person.  Or practicle things - like SIL just moved into a house last year, so we bought her a snow push.

    Do love doing the wine thing.  I would love wine as a gift ... I got some alcohol last year and it was great!

  • @ei34 I hope all is OK!!

    It's funny - my mom and I were just talking about Xmas presents this morning. I thankfully have a small family so not many to buy for. But my parents are impossible to shop for. I usually get them clothes, pajamas, robe, slippers - things like that.

    My brother and SIL are having a baby next year, so I'm probably going to gift them a day trip to pamper themselves before the baby comes.

    For the rest of the family, I'll usually walk around Home Goods to find gifts.

    I've debated on remote car, but she hasn't been into toy cars much {we have a couple} but maybe? I know M was debating on lego lol he's hesitant on duplo but gets it's safer lol

    I'm debating on an easel. BK likes to colour and right now it's been at the table because it's just safest spot to contain any mess

    There was a funny commercial a few years ago.  A couple is living in their apartment in the city.  There is tons of noise outside.  They look at each other like "we gotta get out of here".  In the next scene, they are in a tent camping and looking happy.  About to go to bed.  There is total silence, except for one owl hoot.  They both have their eyes wide open and obviously can't sleep at all.  The guy opens an app on his phone that is "white noise".  It's cars driving and horns honking.  The couple falls fast asleep.

    There are some serious horn-honking people in NYC!  Lol.  My H and I were worried about sleeping, but it seemed to calm down the later it got and ended up not being a big deal.

    I hate remote control cars, they're frustrating for kids who are too young to work it. We had a Mickey one where you wave the flag and it went which was easier.  Grandparents just got him this drone which is cool - sort of like a remote control vehicle but no remote. I dont know that it is this brand but it looks like this. They got it at Walmart though also said they had them at Costco https://www.walmart.com/ip/Hover-Star-Motion-Controlled-UFO/208674550?

    Easel would concern me about mess to be honest unless you have a space where it is ok to get messier or have potential for crayons/markers to find the wrong spot.  I did just get a blow up easel so you use it outside which might be fun though also might be a pain to have to blow up and deflate.

    All of that being said I can't think of any amazing toy he loved at 3 or even now. Mine likes stuff for a while but then moves on. Other than large vehicles I can't think of anything he has liked long-term.

    I know this is random, but we got our previous cat a remote controlled car and helicopter.  She loved chasing those two things.  We also got her a small toy car that would move when it was touched.  It was kind of like a "roly poly" and would flip back up, if it was upside down.  She loved that also and didn't need our participation for it to work.

    Unfortunately, the helicopter was short-lived.  She got her revenge.  We had put it on a bookcase shelf.  When we weren't home, she apparently climbed up the bookcase.  Knocked it to the ground.  And chewed up the rotors, lol.  Thankfully, she didn't ingest anything, that wasn't her personality.  But the rotors had bite marks and small holes all over them.

    Duplo blocks are big and chunky and if you can get a square base bottom that's great for design.  One larger brick container has a ton of pieces in it that are great for exploring her creativity.
