Wedding Woes

Fri-yay

We made it.  My village's St. Patrick's Day parade is on Sunday, the kids are marching with their Brownie/Tiger Scout troops.  Otherwise the normal weekend mix of grading/errands/mass/cooking/downtime.  Hope everyone has something nice planned!

@ei34, thanks for the reminder about St. Patrick's day parades!  Have fun at yours.  I went and looked up the dates for our local ones, but they are next weekend.  It's the 50th anniversary for the one in a suburb (Metairie).  Their 50th parade was supposed to be 2020, but we all know how that went (sigh).  There is also an Irish-Italian parade the weekend after that (March 20th), which is actually bigger and in a less congested area.  I usually go to this one, instead of the St. Patrick's day ones because of that.

I have a very busy day today, even though it is my half-day Friday.  I need to go to one of my banks and transfer money.  For some reason, the "from" bank isn't letting me do the transfer online.  This is the bank I already despise with every fiber of my being for many reasons, so this latest bs is just yet another log on the fire.  The error message I've had for three days is to "try again later".

Then I need to finish my Costco weekly scanning.  I also have four gas station mystery shops to complete before 3PM.  So I might leave Costco and go back.  I'm only going to be able to do 90 minutes at Costco before having to head out to the gas, so I'm hoping my H can finish without me.  These are more traditional mystery shops and different from the gas station audits I do.  They don't pay as much, but are much faster and easier, so the "money per time" is better.  They are all close to each other, but are a bit of a drive from where I live/work.

One of them is across the street from a Sam's Club.  I got an e-mail that my Sam's Club membership is expiring on April 1st.  So I'm taking the opportunity to have a "last hurrah" and stock up on a bunch of things I can only get at Sam's.  I'll probably do another membership at some point but, since I don't go there very often, I like to wait until I have a need before renewing.  Because it could be six months before I feel like going again, so no reason to pay for all that time.

Phew!  But at least the rest of my weekend should be relaxing.

Update:  I spoke to a CSR at the "from" hated bank.  I'm trying to transfer from a HELOC and to a checking account at a different bank.  Apparently you can't do that with HELOCs.  Even though I can do it the other way around.  I wouldn't even be so mad about it, if there had been a USEFUL error message telling me what was wrong the first time I tried it.  Instead of some bullshit "try again later".  Which, like an idiot even though I know how dysfunctional this bank is, I did keep "trying again later" for three days until I finally called.

  • Fairly busy weekend.
    Saturday at 10:30 M & I have an appt with Chevy {well I have an appt but I bring M because I may be looking at getting a car - also M has questions about upcoming EV Silverado}
BK is going to MIL & SFIL while we do that just so we're not trying to contain her while we have serious talks. Plus if M & I are able to test drive, BK can't be in car obv.
They got a giant doll house/castle from MIL's coworker.
For size reference, SFIL is 6'7" and he said it's probably 2/3 compared to him. Lol

M & I have cleaning to do, that I'm hoping mostly will be done on Saturday and maybe a bit Sunday.
It's suppose to be really warm but rain, but we'll see how it is. I hope it won't be shitty weather all day and BK can get outside.

M is attempting to reglue and nail the zoo - wood glue has just not been cutting it and he got another clamp to hopefully keep it settled long enough to dry.
I may have a solution to all the crap that's building up since it's 90% M's stuff. Instead of multiple boxes, I've potentially got an old laundry bin that we can use to store everything until he goes thru it.

I've been personally trying to sort thru what I can so it's less in general. I have a bag of donation stuff to drop tomorrow.
  • Thanks for the reminder!  I need to get DH to get the corned beef.  I make my late aunt's recipe which is SO GOOD and will mean everyone wants leftovers so I think I am making 3 this year which is basically one for dinner and two split for leftovers among 3 houses.

  • We made it to Friday. I work today and then have a three day weekend so we can celebrate my birthday at brunch on Sunday. Otherwise SSDD. I have a nail appointment scheduled tomorrow. Plans to hike tonight and tomorrow if my shin splint cooperates.

  • Oh! I also had BK going through her summer shorts last night. Only 2 to toss in donation - they sat weird and because of the material, whenever she sat down her bum would show lol

    She did discover the delight that is skorts lol I was hoping she'd like them because the  elementary school has a dress code about skirts/dresses and needing shorts or tights underneath {kids play and have gym - so I kinda get it}
We're still into a girlie phase, so I may buy only 1 or 2 for next year.
Also apparently she wants to get another blanket? I think that was prompted because I got a new comforter for M & I

@short+sassy I feel you on the membership clubs. I don’t have Sam’s, haven’t for awhile, but I do know I like Costco more.  I’m with Costco 90% for the discounted Nutrisystem gift cards.  Membership is $60/yr and I probably buy 8-9 NS giftcards through them at $20 off.  People keep telling me the gas prices (and tires) are worth membership too, but I keep forgetting.
have a great bday brunch @levioosa

I got an old navy email yeaterday for some supercash.  I don’t need anymore clothes.  I just bought a shiton of them.  But I also can’t pass up a coupon (read: don’t send me any coupons!). I got some good items though.  I’m most excited about a fleece zip up.  But only because normal female fleeces never fit my super long arms, and this one is in a tall size… which to me, means the sleeves should cover my wrists at least? But the more I read up on it… the more I think they don’t sell petite, regular and tall sizes in tops & fleeces. Those petite, reg, and tall selections seem to be for bottoms only…. We’ll see I guess.

  • Still sick but the baby is doing much better! My mom and H are both negative! Work has been super busy and I’m in need of a rest.
Hope you get some sleep.  Baby parenting zaps you and sickness makes it worse.
  • Yay for baby Here’s hoping you can say that about yourself real soon @charlotte989875!

Thank you!! It just takes so much more energy when you’re sick!

Thankfully he wants to read books and snuggle so I’m leaning in to that.
  • Happy FRIDAY!!  So glad we're here.

Tonight and Sunday should be low-key.  Tomorrow is our big Scouts crossing over event.  It's not until the evening, but we're probably going to be busy in the afternoon with making sure we're ready. I'm just glad it's in the evening so I don't have to set my alarm for tomorrow.

The weather is going to be beautiful all weekend!!  I'm living for this early spring preview.  I know we're going to seesaw, but I'm just happy for a nice weather weekend when we're pretty low-key.
  • @charlotte989875 parenting a sick kid is so much easier when you're not sick :( How are you feeling?
  • Yay, glorious Friday! It's gorgeous here and is supposed to stay that way all weekend too. 70s and sunny!

Tomorrow morning I'm running a 5k. I'm super excited because it will be my first official "race," not that I'm racing anyone. I don't care if I finish last, just so long as I finish. Sunday we need to get out and do some yard work. Nothing much else going on.

@CharmedPam, I do have a fleece and a long sleeve T from ON that are tall sizes. The shirt is comically long but the fleece works. It's the kind with the thumb holes and I can wear them. (I'm 6'1 with corresponding long arms). While we're on the topic, where are you buying work pants these days? Gap/BR used to be my go-to, but everything is either cropped, too casual, or ugly. I figured out this week that 0 of my work pants fit; I should probably have at least one pair.

With my gig job, I obviously go to Costco a lot.  Plus it is vastly closer to my house than any of the Sam's Clubs.  But, unfortunately, my Costco is on the smaller side for a warehouse store and probably has about one third less items than the Sams.  So I can't quite give up Sam's club.  Though usually I let my membership lapse, wait about 6ish months until I feel like going again, and then wait for a Groupon to rejoin.

I actually almost never get gas at Costco.  At least in my area, their prices are usually only a few cents less than most gas stations.  And, even though they have a lot of pumps, their lines are LONG.  Plus I drive small vehicles with only 13 gallon tanks.  So the 30 cents (total) that I saw on a fill-up is not worth waiting in line for 5-10 minutes (sometimes longer).

The Sam's clubs in my area are a complete shit show when it comes to gas.  Similar savings of only a few cents. but their lines are sometimes as long as their huge parking lots.

To me, gas prices are one of those things that I find many people are really illogical about.  They'll get super excited because it's 5 or 10 cents cheaper at gas station X than gas station Y.  But don't actually do the math to figure out what that savings is and if it is worth driving out of their way or waiting in a long line.

Like, people in a fairly new Escalade or Lexus SUV.  Congrats on saving $1.50.  But was that really worth it to wait in a 15-25 minute Sam's gas line?  Your savings vs time is less than minimum wage.  And, considering your vehicle, I assume your salary is substantially more than that.

  • Oh that’s true. I have a 13 gal tank too. Costco is out of my way, and I get anxiety in such large crowds I really only like going when they open on the weekends!

@MyNameIsNot, I keep forgetting you’re another board tally! I’m no help on work pants because I assume you’re business casual?  We can wear jeans.  Sorry! (Old navy Tall’s are great).  On the rare (and it’s very rare) days I don’t wear jeans, I do “yoga” pants but they look like reg pants.  Love these (but size up!):

  • Reprieve!  I'm about to leave work and just checked my gas shops, to freshen my memory on what they want.

I thought they were due today, but they are actually due tomorrow.  Yeah!  I could have made it work today, but tomorrow will be so much easier.  That means I'm also pushing my Sam's Club big shopping trip until tomorrow also.  But those are the only things I have to do tomorrow.

Aaahh, all the stress for my afternoon is gone.  I have so much more time and don't need to rush.

  • @MyNameIsNot Do you have the store Ricki's?
If so, I suggest checking there for pants! All my coworkers and I are different height/body type and their pants work for all of us :)

    Enjoy the birthday brunch @levioosa
    Some good news @charlotte989875
Care to share the recipe @banana468?  My corned beef is good but curious about your aunt's technique

I have a Costco membership that I'm annually on the fence about canceling.  It's only $60 but I don't go more than 3-4 times a year.  The quantities are nice but I hate their lack of variety in the grocery aisles.
  • @ei34

I boil the corned beef as directed with the spice packet that it comes with.  Doing that needs to be on a day or evening where I'm not going anywhere because it can be done in 1-3 hours depending on the toughness and cut.

Once it's out, I either refrigerate it right away or move to the next steps:

-Drain so there is no water logged anymore.  I used the pat w/paper towels and dry rack method.

-Place cooked corned beef in aluminum foil and sprinkle with a VERY healthy amount of brown sugar.  Pat the brown sugar on top and the sides and even the bottom.

-Wrap up the corned beef in the aluminum foil and bake in a 300 degree oven for an hour or so.

This should give you a tender corned beef that now has brown sugar sweetness that is SO delicious.

I slice it about 1/2" thick and serve hot with colcannon or boiled potatoes cabbage and carrots.

Oh wow.  Yum.  Definitely trying that this year @banana468, thanks!

You're welcome!  With the baking part you do not want it to be in an oven that's too hot because the goal is for it to glaze and be tender.  I also reheat in the foil in the oven.  I recommend using a sheet pan because I usually puncture my foil and get wet brown sugar meat juice all over.

Makes a GREAT ruben for leftovers.  Get good Swiss cheese!

I am annoyed that I'm thinking about this on a Friday.

I used to love Ricki's!  Always had such nice clothes.  I love Marks - I just went there last week and bought some new jeans that are actually good quality.  The last pairs I bought at the Bay and they barely lasted two years.
