Where's Wednesday?

Yesterday felt like a lot of hassle and bad news for me.

Today is good news, lol.

My MINI is still under it's after market warranty.  It actually doesn't expire until June 2023.  So a little over one year from now.

Note to self:  Sell that car a few months before the warranty expires!  Hopefully there will be more new/used car inventory by then, because I would want to buy another convertible.  Possibly another MINI.  Possibly something else.

The tenants I was complaining about paid everything that is due, except for the longstanding overdue rent that is on a payment plan.  But part of what they paid did include the $50 payment toward that.  I have primarily always dealt with the mother, who rarely gives me straight answers when there is a problem.  She often doesn't seem to "understand" what I am texting.  I know some of it is feigned, but I also think some of it is she has limited reading skills (I suspect) and limited life experience (I know she does).

After the long back and forth texting with the mother yesterday, I sent an e-mail to the adult daughter who is also a tenant.  There just seemed to be so much confusion about a number of things, on the mom's side.  So I wanted to make sure the daughter was aware of what was going on also.  Apparently she wasn't!  The daughter called and we spoke on the phone.  It seemed like a positive conversation.  The daughter has had the money the whole time and Zelle'd it to me.  She was frustrated with her mom that the mom hadn't said anything to her.  Instead, the mom had been texting me like she didn't have the money and was trying to borrow it from other family members.  It was just surreal.  The mom was freaking out because I'd told her we're filing for an eviction next Wednesday, if we don't get the rent.  But hadn't said anything to her daughter, who did have it.

I realize there is also the possibility that the daughter wasn't entirely telling me the truth either.  But she did seem genuinely frustrated with her mom.  She and I also came to an agreement that, going forward, I would send a group text to both of them for any communication that is needed.

Re: Where's Wednesday?

  • I'm dragging today.  Slept decently last night so maybe DST catching up with me?  Maybe I'm just old.

@short+sassy - yay for the MINI being under warranty.
@CharmedPam - sorry things weren't adding up with the okcupid guy.  Take time to focus on yourself.

It's taco night at our house.  I had dinner plans with a friend, but we had to postponed because of a family situation on her end.  So tacos it is.

    1 week!!!! Ahhh @levioosa
be truthful.  But always keep in the back of your head that you could possibly come back lol

  • I just had to walk over to the other side of the office and ask the 3 main offenders of 95% of the noise in my area (I'm truly not exaggerating; right now I can clearly hear a conversation on the phone from one of the people and he's a solid 500 feet from my office, with walls and turns in between) and ask them to please keep it down.  All 3 of them have voices that carry, but they also don't have an "inside" setting.  I just don't feel good and it's wearing on already thin nerves.  But now I have to CYA with manager, b/c one of them is bullying coworker, the other two are sycophants, so waiting to let her know.  I had complained to manager before about their noise level, so it's not new news.

Mostly SSDD.  Made plans to go with a friend to see Batman on Saturday, so hopefully I don't just cancel and keep staying home.  One of my favorite taco places also has a divine sounding special, so will try to go there too.
  • @CharmedPam, sorry to hear about okcupid guy.  But sounds like it is for the best.  Regroup.  Focus on yourself and your upcoming surgery.

Attraction/chemistry can be such a weird thing!  That happened all the time, when I was single and dating.  I'd see a guy who I could acknowledge was conventionally attractive, but just didn't do anything for me.  And the opposite.  I'd have mad chemistry with someone who wasn't that good looking, but I found him appealing and was drawn to him.  And everything in between.

@levioosa, you're one of the reasons I bought the extended warranty to begin with!  You warned me they are super reliable, until they hit 70K miles.  I did more research online and saw that same info everywhere.  It was a very expensive warranty!  Over $4K, though for 5 years and bumper to bumper.  The money I've saved on repairs has already well exceeded that.

Even in a medium sized area like NOLA/suburbs, there are only a few mechanics who service the MINIs at all.  My regular mechanic for it joked to me once that, "MINIs keep our lights on!"  And this is a foreign car mechanic who also fixes Porsches, other BMWs, and Mercedes.

  • Wow one week @levioosa, that’s so soon! I forgot are you inviting family?

My  office annoyance is people in a cube environment who use their speaker phone for conversations, smh.  The woman who has the cube next to mine does this with another coworker, who she is also friends with.  A little weird because that is the only person she does a speakerphone with.  At least it isn't more than 1-2x/week.

At a previous work cube, the person in the office across from me had Zoom meetings all the time.  She'd put those on speaker also.  It was so aggravating.  Just because she was in an office, doesn't mean that everyone else in all the cubes around her couldn't hear all that constant noise.

I keep noise-blocking headphones at work.  The ugly, large kind that people wear at construction sites and on airport tarmacs, lol.  They are the best and preserve my sanity.

  • Things are good. The weather is finally warmish and our favorite ice cream place opens tonight!
Do ice cream places in your area close during the winter?

They don't where I live, at least not ice cream.  But we do have a lot of snowball stands here and most of those have some kind of season, though it varies a lot.  Some only close in the winter, some are only open in the summer, etc.

Yay @levioosa!  Ugh sorry @CharmedPam...right call though, dishonesty sucks.  That's exciting about the will @mrsconn23

I was yesterday year's old making dinner last night when I found out that mushrooms can actually be pretty nicely cooked in the microwave.  It was veggie burgers for dinner and I wanted to saute some mushrooms as a topping but didn't want to dirty another pan.  Tossed a couple handfuls with one Tbsp butter and some thyme, microwaved for two minutes, stirred, and one more minute.  They didn't get delightfully browned the way they do in a pan but the texture and flavor were perfect.  Woohoo.
  • that's good news @mrsconn23!  although I'm confused, if someone was specifically excluded from a will how can they just decide to add those people back in?
  • Getting a quote soon from a handyman about a bunch of projects that need to be done. Unfortunately it will just be the "needs" and not my "wants" since the needs keep piling up.  I really really really need some drainage work for my backyard because it is a mudpit but I think it's going to have to wait another year at least

IDK?  DH didn't really explain it because he was getting ready for a meeting.  So I'm going to ask him more about it tonight.  I have no idea on estates and all that.  Also, she was an NC resident when she died (even though she was back here because uncle was her POA and she was about to become a ward of the state...it was a damn mess)...so yeah, not sure.

Also, the original information about all this came from DH's other uncle.  So I think there was a lot of 'telephone' going on.  DH went to dinner with his uncle last month when I was in Mexico and that's when he found out about the estate almost being settled and this whole drama with our portion.  Because it was indicated DH and his siblings were going to be shut out, I really didn't ask too much about it.
  • We're nearly halfway through the week!  I have a leftover antipasti salad from Sunday so I'm eating a ton of cheese.

I HAVE to start my corned beef.  Saturday we have people over for St. Patrick's Day and Chiquito makes his first reconciliation and I have a haircut.   I need to do as much in advance as I can and I love DH but...he's not a cook of Irish food.

Locally owner (which is the majority) do close for the winter usually between November and March. The weather is so bad there’s no foot traffic and most people won’t hang around outside eating ice cream even if they drive somewhere so it’s not worth it for them to stay open.

The place makes its own ice cream and the have new flavors of the week so it’s fun, and the people are nice and know us by sight so that’s cool. The fun parts of living in a village suburb.

The warehouse DH used to work in is on fire and the smoke is traveling pretty far.  I can see the cloud in my backyard.  DH works close to the warehouse still, so he went and got a close picture of the massive plume.

It looks scary af.  I hope everyone got out.

For those of you who live by a Crumbl, the Peanut Butter Cookies and Cream cookie this week is *chef’s kiss*

@charlotte989875 we deputized my FBIL and FSIL is the witness (we’re joking she’s the witness/MOH/photographer/videographer lol). After our very short ceremony we’re having our parents meet us and we’ll tell them at dinner/it will be obvious because FI will be in a suit and I’ll be in a wedding dress. I’m a tad worried about the reactions but I’m not changing anything now.
I love it!  You get to do what YOU want to do that day! (Unless it’s killing someone.  I advise against murder)

a crumbl JUST opened by me. Well, by my laser hair removal place and my next appt isn’t until the 4th..

  • We have that situation with some restaurants and ice cream parlors here.

One place known for its lobster closes Columbus Day weekend and re-opens for weekends in late April and for the summer in late May.  The DQ by me is a walk-up only place and opens in a week.  The other local ice cream/candy/breakfast shop that's within walking distance to the beach closed on NYE and reopens Saturday.

There are other places around that are open year round but I think those that really rely on the summer crowds close.  We also have a seasonal population that factors into this too.  I think our town grows by at least 1/3 in the summer.

I just realized I've always lived in touristy places, except the latter half of college, lol.  San Clemente, CA.  NOLA.  And Miami, FL (briefly).  But, although they each have "high and low" seasons, there are steady year-round visitors to all of those places.

But I could understand for colder, Northern areas that tourists don't flock there in the winter months.  Unless it is specifically a ski area.  Then those are the boom months and the rest of the year is pretty dead, lol.

With our new interest in vacation rentals, I'm becoming hyper-aware of tourist seasons for any particular area.

For example, Branson, MO is one place we've been looking into.  Summer is the most popular time, but it is hopping all year long because of the entertainment and outdoor activities.  EXCEPT Jan. and Feb.  The shows go dark in those two months because there are less people.  But there are also less people because there aren't any shows!  So a little bit of a vicious cycle.

  • I think we need to normalize ice cream as a year round treat.

There are places here that are actually "winterized".  Some don't have the heat or insulation for winter and that's especially true for the places that have outdoor dining and you DO NOT want to hang out outside in the dead of winter when it's blustery on the coast.

Some of the restaurants also have property that doubles as storage such as the place next door to our marina that has a parking lot serving as shrink wrapped storage for the boats from Nov-April.
  • @ILoveBeachMusic, that sounds like an amazing trip!  How fun to have that big of a girls' trip and bonus that one of them owns a big, gorgeous house in a warm weather place.

Drat and curses!  Murphy's Law strikes again.  I just got a call from my mechanic.  My extended warranty is almost out of juice.  I didn't remember there is a "cap" on how much they will pay for repairs vs. how much the car is worth.

They are only going to pay $1200 for my repairs.  Which, on the bright side, will get the most crucial item fixed (oil leak in the engine).  But there are other repairs needed that, would be nice, but don't have to happen right now or possibly ever.

The a/c is still a toss up.  It's missing Freon, so they refilled that and put a dye in.  If it's a slow leak, I'll be good to go for the $200 they are charging me for the a/c recharge.  But if it runs out quickly, it could still be a minor repair to fix where it's leaking.  Or possibly a major repair.  That I wouldn't do, just for an a/c.

He was telling me about one of their customers who has a MINI from hell.  That person got hooked up with an extended warranty that was 10 years and totally unlimited.  There have been $30K in repairs over that time frame!  That warranty company is pissed and does a lot of pushback now for that car.
