Wedding Woes

You didn't do your due diligence.

Dear Prudence,

My partner recently moved in with me. Everything was great except for one thing: They were allergic to my indoor/outdoor cat, Muffins. Thankfully, I had a friend who adored Muffins and was looking for a low-maintenance pet, so we found her a new home with minimal hiccups. Or so we thought.

About a month after Muffins moved in with my friend, she unexpectedly gave birth to a litter of kittens! I had no idea she was pregnant—I adopted her as an adult from an informal rescue and mistakenly assumed she had been spayed. My friend is really angry about this. They want me to bring Muffins into my home until the kittens are old enough to adopt out and pay to replace the carpet in their closet, which was pretty much ruined. They say that they took in an adult cat precisely to avoid this kind of headache, and since the cat was in my care when she got knocked up, it’s my responsibility (for what it’s worth, they never asked me if Muffins was spayed).

I think this is ridiculous—my partner is still allergic, and when you adopt a pet you have to be ready for the unknown to happen! I offered to split the cost of caring for the kittens until they can go to new homes, but that’s as far as I want to go. Am I being a jerk?

Re: You didn't do your due diligence.

  • How do you adopt a cat and not take it to the vet to confirm this?

LW, you did not do your due diligence.  If you can't take the kittens in then you owe your friend for the carpet and kitty care.

Next time you get a pet take it for a full checkup and don't make assumptions.
  • Don’t cats make it KNOWN if they’ve never been spayed? Like they mark their territory everywhere?

  • Yup, you're being a jerk. How do you not find out if your cat is spayed?? It clearly was an outdoor cat too if it got knocked up.
  • Trash person
  • Poor Muffins.

This is on you LW, take Muffins back, pay for the carpet and if your partner can’t tolerate it with meds have them stay somewhere else (on your dime) while you figure it out.
  • Poor Muffins. LW is trash because clearly they did not ever take this cat to the vet or they would have known.

  • This also makes me think "informal rescue" is a crap place itself if they didn't get the cat checked out with a vet and spayed.
  • Okay.  I'll play this game with you, LW.  And if your friend had asked if Muffins was spayed, what would you have told her?  Yes.  Because that is what you thought.

The LW is an irresponsible pet owner who never took their cat to the vet.  Their friend did them a big favor, but now the LW wants to wash their hands of the problems.

The LW 100% caused this problem and now they need to whatever they have to, to fix it.

Not necessarily. If no other cats are around, it may look different.

For example, Angel - while I loved him, he wasn't the smartest kitten. Instead of peeing, he'd poop all over just my stuff.
It was 2 months when we realized it was an issue because he'd start and stop - he would do it when I had my period.
Vet confirmed that he was bonded to me and some cats are weird.
  • I also say poor Muffins.  This cat deserved better.  I've adopted a lot of pets, and from all over - want ads, people who just randomly gave them to me, humane society .... the first question I ask is who their current vet is and if I can get a certificate of the spay/neuter and all their files.  And if that doesn't exist, the animal isn't fixed.

  • We have a stray cat in the back yard who was there when we moved in (POS previous owners abandoned her). We were able to catch her and bring her to the low cost clinic to spay to prevent more strays. Turned out she was already spayed, which did make us feel pretty bad because catching her and transport was pretty traumatic for her. They clipped her ear so it would be obvious in the future for anyone else. We’ve since then TNR’d as many strays as we can financially and time wise afford. LW sucks and is part of the problem.

  • My bug has his ear clipped and his wee little tattoo because, before he became a cat who requires wet food 7 times a day and a human bed to sleep in, he was a rugged street cat.
  • Yup, my dog has the spayed tattoo as well.

I frequent real estate investing forums.  It's disgusting how often people do that.

They move out of their place or get evicted.  And just leave their dog or cat in the vacant house/apartment.

I remember reading one story of a guy that owns a big PM company.  Usually they take abandoned pets to the pound.  But there was one bulldog that their employee felt drawn to.  It became the beloved "office dog".

Right? We can’t even go on vacation without setting up cameras in numerous rooms and making sure we see the kitties at least once a day.

Oh, that's the worst thing about vacations, isn't it?  I spend too much time worrying about if they miss me, if they know I'm coming back ....
I should set up cameras, it's a good idea.
