Still poor Wednesday

Woke up not a millionaire. Again. But I may be a billionaire on Saturday, so don’t write me off just yet.
Tonight I’m toying with the idea of heading to the outlets either tonight or tomorrow.  I really need to go through my closet and seriously donate anything that’s too big.  Those tops are doing nothing for me.
Last night I visited an oral surgeon and need 2 teeth extracted, one being a wisdom tooth, it’s not bothering me but next to the one that needs extracted so he said doing both at once makes sense.  I was quoted 787 with insurance.  Should I get a second quote or is that seem right? Extraction only, no implant.

Re: Still poor Wednesday

  • In the thick of it at work. It’s just a lot and I’m not managing it well at all. Too many requests, too little time no one else to do it.
  • Also very mad I'm not 810 million richer today.

Covid is going around my job again. 2 people tested positive just this week and more people are out sick. But please, tell me again how we all need to be in the office every day infecting each other.
  • Still poor and also sleep deprived because I woke up at 3 and couldn’t fall back asleep. I’m so stressed. Debating taking tomorrow off regardless of what H does. I got an email back from the new job and asked all of my questions. It’s a lot.

Otherwise not too much else is changed. My foot is still bothering me. Boo. Probably should rest and trial some Motrin for a week but I hate not being able to work out. I can only do arms so many times a week. Also everyone is popping up positive at work too so I’m just closed away in my office as much as possible.

  • I am also not rich, sadly.  Work is busy, H and I are mad at each other, G is feeling like crap and N has a cold.  Frustrating week so far.

    My employer's response:

Because we don't trust you and that's not how we do things here.  Wear a mask and stay 6' away from people, if you're worried about it.  You'll be fine (dismissive hand gesture)

With a cherry on top of, "if you were exposed, but are vaccinated, you still need to come in the office if you feel fine.  Please wear a mask and avoid people."

  • Man, that doctor's appointment was looooong.  She was running late, which happens, but blerg.  She didn't get into me until almost 11 (supposed to be 10:15)  and then was finished with me around 11:30ish.  But, they have home sleep tests now, she says it definitely sounds like sleep apnea and with my asthma, they tend to go together.  I think with these allergy shots, my asthma has been far more touchy than previous summers (which makes sense, since the allergist said my asthma is 100% allergy induced).  I looked back through my night oxygen readings and the drops really start in late April, which is when I started these shots.  This had all better be worth it in the end (I think it will, but this part sucks).  Getting better sleep would be great too.

  • @CharmedPam, my dentist...not oral surgeon...charges about $225 for each tooth extraction.  But I'm not sure if wisdom teeth are the same price because I had all of mine removed by an oral surgeon when I was 19.

That doesn't include the "extras".  Like the office visit fee and ex-rays..

If a general dentist can remove that wisdom tooth, it would probably be a lot cheaper.  Most dental insurances cover 50% of procedures, until you hit your annual max.  Which, unfortunately, is usually only $1K.

  • I definitely see a paradigm shift as boomers exit management.  People are far more productive when they are given the flexibility to work in a way that is a best fit for them.  Obviously that's not possible with all jobs but for those that it is, there's a major benefit and a massive cost savings when companies realize what they can do to cut down on the business expense that is corporate real estate.

I have yet to meet someone my age who questions how or why employees are productive when not in the office.  In an environment now where companies are not retaining employees and the hiring market is white hot, management that does not embrace the paradigm shift is going to be left behind.
  • @VarunaTT, I hope they have the right solution for you and you can start getting better sleep.

Although it thankfully doesn't happen that often, if I wake up at all when I'm sleeping...even if it is just for a few seconds...I feel like I lost an hour of sleep.  If it happens a few times or I wake up for more than 10 minutes, I feel like I had an all-nighter, the next morning.

My other sleep lesson I learned the hard way.  I took a job as a co-manager for a national gas station chain.  The locations were open 24 hours and all the co-managers had the same schedule.  We worked the first shift for 4 of our days and the swing shift on 1 of them.  Tues./Wed. were our days off.  Fri. was the swing shift day.  I didn't even live that far away but, by the time I got home, I usually only had 4-5 hours of sleep before I needed to get up again and go back to work for 1st shift Saturday.

When I started the job, I figured, "NBD. I won't get enough sleep one day of the week.  I've sometimes had nights like that.  I can hang."

I could NOT!  It was very different when it's a regular occurrence every week, as opposed to once in awhile.  Even though I got plenty of sleep the rest of my workdays, I didn't feel "whole" and well again, until I had my next day off.  I think because it was a really physically demanding job, endurance-wise.

It was a great paying job and I liked it (mostly), but I finally had to quit because I just felt so miserable most of the time.

  • Popping in for a quick second.  Been a little hectic today with things popping off here and there and then trying to do 'on the fly' stuff when my boss and counterpart aren't in meetings.

I am out tomorrow because I'm doing a volunteer day through work.  Someone else needs to helm Prudie and get those problems solved.  :)

Very boomer and set in their ways.  Old-fashioned.

The bolded is already happening.  It seems like there are new people starting all the time.  But then they're gone after a few weeks/months.  When it comes to employee turnover, it feels like a fast food place.  Except we're an engineering firm, lol.

And, while I'm sure they care about that issue, they don't care enough to do something about it and listen to why people are leaving.

They own the real estate their operations are in and rent out most of it to other companies.  Though, come to think of it, that's in NOLA.  They also have offices in Houston and they rent those from other companies.

I'll manage the Prudie helm for this week.

  • What's interesting is that the owners of my company are both Gen X, and not Boomers. I have no idea why they are so set in this antiquated belief. We've had so many employees quit this year, and many of them had made note that they either found a hybrid role or a fully remote role.
  • I've only spoken to my H briefly, but it sounds like we had a good amount of people come today for our showings.  He said he's received a few applications in and also handed some out.

One potential set of tenants are moving to NOLA.on August 6th.  They did their showing with a video walk through.  So far, I like them.  I haven't seen their incomes yet.  But it's two adults and they both work f/t.  They've really been on the ball with communication.  Sent me a FB message shortly after the video showing, that talked about how much they liked the house and thought it was beautiful...I am a sucker for a compliment, lol.  And asked if I would e-mail them an application.  They even let me know they got the applications and around when they would be able to send them back today.

Someone else wants to bring us a deposit tomorrow to hold it.  But when I asked my H how her application looked he gave a bit of a mysterious response, "It's...((pause))...okay.  We'll talk about it tonight."

  • All my wisdom teeth removed were much more than what you were quoted, so I think that sounds ballpark, but .... that's Canadian dollars for me.  So hard to say, @CharmedPam.

I hope I don't have to return to the office, I do my work so well from home.  And things be crazy - it's insane how productive my department is for what we do, so we are not slacking with this work from home.  We have, however, had more employees that work two jobs while doing what they do for us, and that's a downside.  They usually don't last, they think they can get away with it and they can't.

Kitchen reno in less than two weeks!  I'm going to stain my cabinets this weekend now that they are mostly all sanded.  There are just doors I have to do, but I can do them whenever, that can wait.

I think a big difference with that is, when people get all their wisdom teeth out, it's usually before the teeth have broken the gum skin or close to it.  It's trying to stave off people having their mouth too crowded and possibly needing braces later on.

I assume that is a more complicated procedure than extracting a tooth that has already totally grown out.

I know when I got my wisdom teeth removed, I was given some kind of anesthesia and was totally out for the procedure.

I WISH they did that for other dental procedures.  I get there is a risk to anesthesia and it adds a lot of cost.  But I used to get my gums scaled every 2-3 years, which is spread out over two visits each time.  Because that's how painful it is.  They don't want to do your whole mouth, all at once.  I probably should have done it more often, but it was so painful, it was hard to bring myself to do it.  It is constantly poking your under gum line with a sharp object for about 45 minutes.  They numb your gums, but that only makes it bearable enough to not wince with each poke.

  • I had two of my wisdom teeth pulled as a teenager by my pediatric dentist. They had fully broken through but my orthodontist was afraid they would make my teeth move and ruin 2+ years of orthodontic work. My other two, I had removed about 5 or so years ago. I can't remember why because they had erupted through at the same time as the first two and weren't impacted at all. The oral surgeon's fee was a lot more than a normal dentist's fee would have been because of the anesthesia.

We have company coming tomorrow for the weekend - Brickyard racing. I need to fix a fruit salad tomorrow. H smoked a pork shoulder today so we will have pulled pork tomorrow night for dinner. We are also hitting the farmer's market up for fresh sweet corn and green beans. I also need to make a peach cobbler. We bought fresh peaches when we were in Virginia over the weekend.
