Anyone familiar with traveling times on Rt. 3 and Rt. 17 in the Passaic/East Rutherford area?

Hi everyone,

Anyone familiar with how bad traffic is in the area on a holdiay weekend? I figured I would ask someone from the area instead of guessing.

Thanks!!

What part of the holiday weekend?

A Friday afternoon?   there is always traffic on those roads.
A saturday morning/afternoon...sunday....it really depends on what part of the weekend you are talking about.

    Friday afternoon, Labor Day weekend......ouch

3 is always a mess, especially by the Pkwy / 46 mergers.... 17 is hit or miss.
I would plan for the worst case scenario Friday of a holiday weekend,
Is that when your wedding is?

Since it's a Friday afternoon there shouldn't be Meadowlands traffic.  But you never know, especially with the lights on rt 17.  That being said, I travel that way a lot and unless there's been an accident, the traffic hasn't been too bad, just a lot of congestion and stop-and-go on 17 due to the lights.

I used to travel that way for work everyday.  It's brutal during rush hour on a regular weekday if you're heading on 3 west.  On a Friday before a long holiday weekend, fuggedaboutit.

My venue is on Rt. 17 in Carlstadt. I'm trying to keep the church and hotel very close to our venue. However, we were thinking of having pictures done at Lambert Castle in Patterson but I'm concerned that the turn around time to travel there would be out of the question. I saw another church in Passaic.  It's like right in between my venue and the castle. 12-15 minutes in either direction but Lambert Castle is like 20 minutes from my venue. Would 20 minutes be like an hour in holiday driving time?

You'll be coming back eastbound, right?  Might not be that bad, but it's hard to tell.  It's probably the 2nd biggest traveling holiday weekend.

I could take 80 east to 17south from the castle to my venue or take 80 east to 21 south and cut through Wallington. The one church I like in Rutherford, I can either take Rt. 3 west (which would be around 4pm ish or later) or possibly take Rt. 21 north which eventually would dump us onto Rt 80 W right near patterson where the catle is. I using google maps right now. lol

How much time do you have between you ceremony and cocktail hour?  If you are going to have enough time to do this I would assume you have a LARGE gap because on a holiday weekend traffic is going to be a mess around here on a Friday afternoon around that time!

Still working on deciding which church to use so I haven't locked down specific times. I wanted everyone's feedback to see how much time would be needed for traveling purposes and if the traffic will just not allow it to even be doable. We were hoping for some outside pictures since our venue doesn't have any real outdoor space.

Well, I would say that if you want to get from the East Rutherford area over to Lambert Castle and back to Carlstadt, and have your pictures done, you are going to need quite a gap of time, at least a couple of hours.    That time of day on 80 West..there is ALWAYS traffic in the Paterson area.     Then coming back there could be traffic and I always find traffic on 21.    I dont' know I just feel like you are going to be stressed about the traffic on your wedding day and I wouldn't chance it.

I don't know of any, but maybe somebody more familiar with that area can think of a nice place to take pictures closer to your venue.   Good Luck!

Thanks goaliegirl. You're probably right about the stress. It's a bummer about the traffic in that area being such a preventative. I just wanted something nice planned for my lady and it's frustrating when you can't get those check marks. Grrrr

Let's put it this way.. I've never driven on those roads without traffic! I feel your pain though.. the trip to our reception will involve taking the exit for 280 off the parkway, that's always a fun exit! lol

And then you throw in the possiblity of an accident or disabled vehicle and it's all over.  I simply wouldn't risk a ride to the Castle and find somewhere closer/simpler for pictures, even if it's inside your venue.

Currently there is a LOT of construction going on Rt 3 e and w bound. Not sure if that will also impact the traffic @ the times you are looking @.

Ugh Im getting married at same place and also on a Fri but not holiday weekend and Im still stressing about the same thing you are. FI was suppose to get ready at his moms but I said no way, you need to get ready at the hotel bc his mom's is an hour away and the anxiety of a possible accident/traffic etc before the ceremony freaks me out. Id say do a dry run and check it out - its not a definite bc you cant predict but itll give you an idea.

I was thinking of doing a dry run as well. I'm making sure everyone is up there early and everyone is getting ready at the hotel near the venue. I don't want anybody on Rt 3 for more time than they need to be. Thank god Rt. 17 is the first exit off of Rt. 3 when I get off the Turnpike North.

3 and 17 are a disaster most of the time. Just allow lots of extra travel time just in case of construction or an accident.
