Classic Prudie: Tell your grandfather to pay for it, to get it back

Dear Prudence,

My grandmother once had a diamond necklace that was a family heirloom. My grandfather, who didn’t know how to keep things in his pants, ended up giving it to one of his mistresses. My grandmother mourned the loss of the necklace until the day she died. Recently, I happened to stumble across the necklace, or what I think is the necklace, on eBay. I questioned my grandfather and contacted the seller, and both parties think it’s possible this necklace belonged to my grandmother. I wanted it back, but when I tried to discuss it with the seller, she said she was selling it for a reason and that, if I really wanted it back, I would pay her either the asking price or more. I am not sure what to do next. She has thankfully taken it down, but I feel like I am being blackmailed. Any thoughts?

  • What’s confusing. If you want it. Buy it from the person who owns it.

This.  Buying a necklace won't bring back grandma and doesn't solve grandpa's issue.  It's not yours and you aren't owed it.

I understand why the LW is upset, but they are upset with the wrong person.  Grandpa was the one who stole the necklace from his wife and gave it to this woman.

That necklace is now hers and she wants money for it.  It sounds like there is even a question that it may not be the same necklace.

I think the LW should hit up grandpa to pay for it.  But, if grandpa won't, then the LW will need to offer a fair price for it.

  • I get why you're pissed at grandpa, but this seller doesn't owe you shit. If you want the necklace, you need to pay for it. Or ask grandpa to buy it for you. I'm guessing the seller is not the girlfriend that he originally gave the necklace to.
