Wedding Woes

Bad brothers, what's a mom to do?

Dear Prudence, Two months ago, my older son “Carl” was supposed to get married to his fiancé “Lisa.” Unfortunately, the night before, Carl discovered Lisa having sex in her hotel room with his older brother “Brad.” This was not out of character for Brad, who I have been estranged from for several years but who Carl remained in touch with. Of course, I was supportive of Carl immediately ending things with Lisa, and I managed the logistics of the canceled wedding.

However, Carl decided to go a step further and set Brad’s car on fire. (It was not occupied at the time.) While I understand the impulse, I really wish he hadn’t done it, and I’ve told him as much. There’s now a whole legal issue going on between them and Carl is broke because of it (and because Lisa moved out so he’s paying all of the mortgage). I’m certainly going to continue being someone Carl can talk to, but how involved should I be in supporting him financially throughout this?

Re: Bad brothers, what's a mom to do?

  • If Lisa moved out, can he get a roommate to defray the mortgage costs?

I mean, I'd probably help my adult child avoid foreclosure if I could, but it doesn't seem like this is really the biggest issue here.
  • I really want to know why she's estranged from Brad but is ok supporting Carl through this?
  • Well, neither brother seems exceptionally stable.

Do not support him financially.  By doing it you're implying that you're OK with illegal vengeance.

Carl has a major anger management issue.  It may be acute due to the circumstance or it may be a larger problem.  But if Carl has previously shown that he was a grown adult fully capable of being a married man then Carl is also going to need to figure this out without cash.

While Brad's done something awful, if anyone should get financial support it's the guy who needs to buy a new car.
  • The LW shouldn't offer any financial support to Carl.  What happened to him was devastating, but his retaliation was unconscionable.  He's lucky he's not facing criminal charges and I'm guessing he can thank BRAD for that.

Thankfully, it was only Brad's car that was destroyed.  But when a fire starts, there is no telling what can happen.  Those embers could have drifted and set houses and other cars on fire.  People could have been killed.

Carl sounds lucky his financial situation isn't worse than what it is and it's only the value of Brad's car he is responsible for.  It also sounds like Carl owns this house himself and it wasn't purchased with Lisa.  If so, he qualified for the loan with only his own income, so unless something changed with that income, he should be able to pay the mortgage.

But I'm sure it's easier to call mommy and pump her for money.

Also, unless Brad's car was parked alone, Carl should be really glad the fire didn't spread.

One of DH's friends got a phone call from the parking security one day at their employer.  He was told that his relatively new BMW was likely totaled because the car next to it caught fire after it was parked (an old Volvo that likely caught fire when the exhaust/engine set fallen autumn leaves on fire) and well, he needed to get a ride home from work that day.
  • Yeah LW I imagine you wish he would t have done it. I suspect most everyone involved here wishes the same thing.

These are adults, you’re not responsible for their actions, and your especially not obligated to help finance his poor decisions. Support him (not financially) the best you can but stand firm about paying for anything. These are the consequences of his actions and he needs to work it out.
  • Love the way LW adds that the car wasn't occupied. "My son has insane anger issues, but, no one died!"  Jeez...stay out of this except for help researching therapists that take his insurance/don't have a six month waitlist (waaay easier said than done, unfortunately).

The other part to all of this is that now everyone is likely thinking that the FI dodged a bullet by going with the other brother.
I'm sure Lisa is still the true villain in LW's tainted narrative.
  • Revenge, to me is renting a billboard and exposing Brad and Lisa.  Or leave her shit out on the yard, with a sign that says what she did. Fire seems extreme to me.

But likely only hers.  My point was more that the LW is going to have a hard time getting other people to think "Sure burning his car seems to be a reasonable response."  It's destruction of property and she should be thanking her lucky stars he's not incarcerated.

    totally agree!
  • Carl should be in jail, and you're worried about his mortgage?
