I'm going to see From Russia, With Love, with some friends tonight.  I ended up missing Mother! last night.  One of my close friends had to send his 73 year old father to the hospital b/c dad couldn't move his legs.  The plan is for him to be discharged to a skilled nursing facility.  The man has slipped into dementia, frighteningly fast.  My friend is understandably upset and asked to hang out, so I did (along with my friend I was supposed to see the movie with.  A perk of having community).  Another friend is going through an intense medical scare with her child, who has had 2 episodes of passing out and being non-responsive now.  They have appointments with a pediatric cardiologist and neurologist this week.  She is also understandably struggling and I want to smack the people who when she posted, "I can't do this," told her she could b/c she was a mother and that meant she had to.  Like, WTF?!?!  The woman is reaching out to her support system, fall in around her, not pull some patriarchy super hero mother BS on her.

Then BFF called last night in a panic attack.  BFF is dating a transman, who will be fleeing the state.  BFF is understandably upset and angry.  So, fuck the MO legislature and the people here who are so transphobic and homophobic.  I hate them and they can go to whatever hell they believe in.  There was a Tiktok posted from an advocate who explained the stages of genocide.  We are at Stage 8 for queer folx and Florida sure AF is trying to move to actual extermination.

So basically, yesterday was heavy and I'm feeling it in my bones today.  Otherwise, SSDD at work.

Re: Tuesday, blah

  • We share everything in our family.  And now both Chiquita and I are feeling the results of Chiquito and DH sharing their cold.

Class 3 of 4 for safe boating tonight and I need to keep studying.

@VarunaTT, a very heavy day for you!  I’m so sorry on so many levels.
@banana468 oh no! Hope it goes quickly

my aunt and cousin come from in from Canada today. We’re just hanging out for the three days since I’m still wfh.  But hopefully we get the boat in the water to tool-around for a bit. And have a drink or two on the marina. I actually got my labwork done on Sunday before getting here knowing I’d probably eat and drink like crap when they got here.

  • @VarunaTT Oh man, that's all really heavy and sad. And f those bullshit responses to that mother. She's struggling and needs help. Help her!

Mostly SSDD today. We're having a very annoying issue with our TV after the power went out for all of 3 seconds the other night. Multiple calls to Spectrum, then to Vizio only to be told it's a very specific issue with this model of the TV and Spectrum cable and that there should be an update coming soon to fix it. When we try to watch cable, there's no sound. We only have sound when watching streaming. The TV is not even 2 years old yet.

    So that's mostly it.

All the vibes @VarunaTT that's some real bs
Ugh so frustrating @climbingsingle!  Our power (and internet) kept going on and off Sat night into Sunday due to thunderstorms and heavy wind, but there wasn't a lasting impact, hope your issues resolve soon.

A PD I'm doing tonight just got moved to remote which is amazing.  I chose a career that's very has-to-be-done-in-person, which is fine, but whenever meetings or some aspect of work can be done from home, that's a great feeling.  Otherwise pretty ssdd.
  • It has been a week.

Tuesday night I got a mild gastro bug. Typically they warrant a hospital visit but this wasn't as bad.
Wednesday morning I felt like hell so M got up with BK and I came down briefly to say bye and drink water. Razor blades in my throat.
Assumed it was from dehydration and being sick.

Couldn't stay awake, assumed it was just from being sick for a few hours and body recouping.
Didn't feel any level of better and couldn't physically sit up - M checked and I had a fever.
    Went to bed early.

Thursday went to work for a couple hours. Still razor blade throat so I called clinic and made appt.
Ended up leaving work and went home and slept.

    GUESS WHO HAD STREP ALSO!
    No white spots. Blisters.
Likely gastro skipped contagion period and made it worse.

I'm on like 4 pills a day for at least another 5 days. Damn strong meds lol
Back at work today and I have a lot to do.
  • I’m so sorry @VarunaTT. What a heavy day.

I am worried I’m getting sick. I had a patient on Friday who was mad they still had to wear a mask in our facility (a lot of facilities have stopped and with the exception of some cities/counties it’s no longer a mandate). They were also actively sick and while I was doing their exam they coughed in my face which really pissed me off. And now I’m feeling run down and my throat is a little scratchy and I can’t tell if I’m actually getting sick or if it’s just the result of having a little too much fun this weekend and sleeping with the fan on.

Otherwise SSDD. I’m already ready for Friday, and I have plans to cuddle my favorite cat, sleep in, and then spend the rest of the day spudding on the couch. I have a feeling my ankle will need until Friday or Saturday to start to feel back to normal too.

@VarunaTT, that's a lot to handle!  My best wishes go out to each of your friends facing a tough time.

For your friend with the child, it sounds like they haven't been diagnosed yet.  If that's the case, I'm just throwing this out there.  I had a childhood friend who would zone out for 5-30 seconds many times a day.  Sometimes he would pass out.  It took some time for him to be properly diagnosed, but it turns out he had developed a severe allergy to corn.  It's shocking how many foods have a corn ingredient, like corn syrup, once you start paying attention.  I hope it's figured out soon and turns out to be something easily managed.

@banana468, I hope you and Chiquita start feeling better!  Edited to add: And @levioosa!

I got a little petty at work yesterday and am feeling smug, even though I know that feeling is always brief in this place.  I've mentioned about how two of the engineers have been trying to "streamline" my steel work and make it more automated.  They ask me questions and such.  But have never included me in any bigger picture discussions.  Despite the fact that neither of them have ever done a steel package, while I've done hundreds over the last 9 years.

But I had an inkling about one of the things they are doing from screenshots where they were showing me other things.  They've probably spent a lot of time on what they have done so far.  But it's not going to work and is dumb AF.

Which I would have told them sooner, if they had ever bothered to ask me.  But since they don't think I'm worthy of being in their meetings or asking for my opinion, even though I'm the expert on this process, then I'm going to be a petty, good little non-engineer girl and only answer the questions they ask.

It finally came up yesterday on a phone call with one of them.  I did maintain a pleasant, polite, and helpful tone throughout.  I told him why they wouldn't be able to automate the data that goes in the columns.

It was also an opening for me to tell him, "I'm always open to ideas on how to do things even better.  But the fact of the matter is, I have this process down to a science and as streamlined as possible.  If automation was possible and the best choice, I would have already done that a long time ago."

He agreed with me or at least said he did.  But that Other Guy wants everything automated.  He said they are having a meeting this morning and he will talk to him about it.

Me (thinking): Oh, another meeting I'm not invited to, but should be?  Of course.  Me (said): Okay, let me know if you all have any more questions.

  • @banana468 damn! I hadn't heard that. I knew strep was going around for kids.
Still no idea where I got it though
  • When I tested positive to strep they asked about gastrointestinal issues too and said it was a common symptom. I was also surprised.

Day is fine. My team has some weird dynamics and I really try and mind my own business but it’s so unlike any place I’ve ever worked. People expect their work colleagues to be like we’re on Ted Lasso or something. We don’t need to be everything for everyone here and that’s okay.
  • @charlotte989875 I've never heard of it. So crazy. I'll have to look it up.

Tbh the dr was more confused/concerned about my getting gastro every 2 ish yrs lol So I have meds for that too!
  • Ugh, sorry for everyone feeling sick - hope you all get better soon.

Tuesday is the worst. We should start posting the Monday afternoon Prudie on Tuesday to liven it up.
  • Dad's sugar is still wonky today which is frustrating after a few years of it staying in check.  Today it was over 400 but he's also walked close to 20 feet which is progress.

I'm concerned that the update is that they want to discharge him on 5/7 and I want to figure out what they anticipate for his arrival home because I think my parents need work done in the house for his arrival home.    Off the bat I'm curious if they need to update the bathroom with bars in the shower and I want to know how he's currently cleaning because my parents have tubs and no walk-in showers.  Dad also likes to sit in his "man chair" but I'm thinking he may need one that raises and lowers for him.
  • Tuesdays suck. MIL is here and we're going out tonight, so at least there's that to look forward to. To make things more fun, my internet has been lagging in and out all day, so all of my meetings have been a giant pain in the ass. I should probably go into the office tomorrow, but I really don't want to.
  • @banana468 that’s tough. Does their house have a lot of steps/floors?

  • I'm sorry that people are feeling sick.  @MissKittyDanger That sounds really really rough!  I had strep last year, but it wasn't nearly as bad as what you are describing.  I did not have gastro issues, just the sore throat.  And I get headaches with strep.  I remember the first time I had it as a kid and my first symptom was an awful headache.  And my brother was being annoying to me, but that's not really a symptom, just a typical memory, lol.

Work is good today.  Day 2 of a 2 day training.  Less computer issues today which is a plus.

A little cold and dreary here.  The tulips want to bloom, but the weather keeps getting cold again.

  • @banana468 that’s tough. Does their house have a lot of steps/floors?
They could make it work for my dad once he's in but there are steps to get inside.  If entering from the garage or driveway there are a dozen or so steps.  If the next door neighbor grants my mom the option of using their driveway then it's four steps into the front door.  And it also means that Dad can't go up or down stairs or then outside once inside without assistance.  Their bedroom, den, bathroom, kitchen and living room are on one floor and there's one step down from the kitchen to go outside if they want to get fresh air on the deck.

Be careful with the facility that they are giving him enough insulin.  He certainly needs to take more than he usually does, if he's been at good levels, but is now continually running super high.

There are rampant stories in the diabetic community about how poorly hospitals/nursing homes/medical facilities take care of diabetic patients.  You'd think they'd be all over it, but they are sometimes clueless and suck.  Even for as rarely as I've been in the hospital...and not even overnight in the last 25 years...I also had a bad experience.

It feels super crappy and to be at 400+.  If he or your mother are comfortable checking his blood sugars and adjusting his insulin doses themselves, they should.  If they aren't, they should speak to his doctor if they haven't already and be EMPHATIC he needs more insulin and that situation needs to be monitored more closely.

I'm sorry because I know I'm speaking out of turn.  But it's this kind of stuff that angers me about places that should know better.  He's not getting the proper amount of insulin.  They need to give him more in incremental steps and monitor.  And continue that until he gets to better levels. I hope I'm mistaken and they are doing that.  I know it's a delicate balance and they don't want to drop someone too low.  But ffs, we're also not talking about "it's a bit too high at 180".

H's parents had walk-in tubs installed and bars in the bathroom along with raised seats. It helped them stay in their home. They also had the left recliners which helped a lot. Years ago H also had a chair lift installed on the stairs or they would've had to move long ago. All that being said, FIL stayed in that place at least a year too long! I hope your Dad's blood sugar gets under control and his cognition improves. Prayers for your family.

I will ask!  The way I've interpreted it they insisted that he will be on insulin and because he was years without needing it they are monitoring it very closely.

Mom spends nearly all day there so I'll check in tomorrow.
  • @banana468 my nana had the lift chair. My mum has it now, and she loves it - definitely worth looking into

@kerbohl I never had such bad strep so idk if the massive headache was related to that or dehydration - my body didn't even register I was dehydrated for a few days, then it was like "INGEST ALL THE LIQUIDS" to which I had to stop drinking water because it made me nauseaus. M ended up getting gatorade for me so it would help also.

Gatorade can be a godsend when it comes to situations like that.  I've never been a gatorade drinker, but had to get it a few times for health stuff.  Never for sports reasons!

    Yes!

I've relied on Gatorade every time I've been hungover or with an upset stomach and really needed it postpartum.  I'd dilute it with a lot of water and would have it throughout the day because my doula reminded me I didn't just need to be hydrated but I needed to replace electrolytes.

Gatorade now makes "Gator-lyte" and we've been buying it for post-hiking.  We love it better than regular Gatorade.

The orange version tastes exactly like orange Hi-C, which my grandma kept stocked when we were kids (it was orange and grape Hi-C and it was the best 'treat' since we only had it at their house <3 ).

We always grab gatorade more in the summer because M & I are both sweaty. Great to have on hand - we also like to bring at least one bottle to the beach.
BK likes water but sometimes near the end we'll have her drink some gatorade to just give that extra boost since she's in heat and sun.
