Wheezy Wednesday

The residual smoke from the wildfires is still really bad here- my district and the kids' at least moved all recess and phys ed to indoors, but sending vibes to anyone in its path who has to work outdoors or has respiratory issues!
Wishing everyone an uneventful and smooth humpday!

Re: Wheezy Wednesday

  • Ugh - Chiquita has an entire outside day today so I hope that they don't overdo it.  The class is going to a ropes course and she is SO excited to go.  I feel for the kids who have asthma and breathing issues because it's not so great.

MIL and FIL have an official new location but it comes with with what's going to be a lot of drama - some of which is not surprising DH at all.
  • My throat hurts and I have a mild headache, which I'm assuming is related to the smoke. Driving through some parts of NY last night was crazy. And when I got home, the "campfire" smell was incredibly strong. Hope everyone else is feeling Ok!
  • Wheezy indeed.

We had some rain yesterday but it didn't clear up enough smoke.
Then we lost power. A tree hit a powerline near us. Luckily we got it back overnight.

Had it not been so smokey out, we would have just made something on the BBQ but alas ....

Went to IL's for dinner. BK was disappointed it wasn't a sleepover - she wants a redo on the sleepover she had to cut short.
We get in the car to go home, and she says in a small voice
    "I thought it was a sleepover :( "

We confirmed she'd sleepover again soon but things are a bit busy and she's going to grandma's this weekend.

Again, I'm glad power came back. I very much needed a shower today.
I had to wake up super early to shower and make BK's lunch and make coffee - couldn't do much of that last night without power and I was so tired when it came on.

I'm very much looking forward to this weekend of BK at my mum's. I'm so tired.
  • Hope everyone in the NE handles the smoke well and things die down soon.

I'm exhausted today. Lingering effects of a high steroid dose, my period, and 2 kids who all of a sudden hate sleeping are really getting to me. N has been an amazing sleeper for almost 2 years and all of a sudden will not stay in his bed, cries if we leave, and is waking up multiple times a night. He'll be 2 in 2 weeks and i'm losing my mind. G has not been a good sleeper since he got sick. Partly meds, partly just got used to us being around all the time. We dont' know how to get it back on track and would welcome any ideas.
  • I forgot to work from home today.  I could do it tomorrow, but honestly, I have so much to do, I kind of need to be in the office.

No big news.  Finally got my groceries delivered last night and will be cooking tonight.  Trying to get back on schedule.  I didn't sleep well and was very restless.  This morning I realized I started my period in the middle of the night, so that explains that.  Otherwise, SSDD.

My friend from Rochester is sending pics, where the air quality is like 150 and it looks so creepy! Nothing here though, we’re at a 54.

speaking of creepy, found a really good horror/sci fi series to get into. Prime’s “From”.  Not horribly scary, I think most people can handle it unless maybe your own shadow scares you? I dunno, I can’t be one to gage these things.

@ei34, I remember occasionally having days in elementary school where the air quality was too poor to let us out for recess.  Sometimes wildfires, but usually smog.

@banana468, good luck to Chiquita.  Hopefully the air quality isn't too bad and doesn't put a damper on their outside festivities.  I'm glad your ILs have found a place to settle after their sale.  Though sorry to hear it will be a lot of drama (curious what that is if you are ever able to tell us, lol).  Hopefully it's still more good than bad.

@climbingsingle, I hope the smoke and smell start dissipating and you start feeling better.  I've always found it amazing just how FAR smoke and ash travels.

Volcanoes are exponentially even bigger than fires for that effect.  I just went down a rabbit hole.  Fun volcano facts.  The largest volcano eruption in recorded history was in Indonesia, in 1815.  It caused worldwide temperatures to drop by up to 6 degrees F (3 degrees C) for a year.  Especially in the Northern hemisphere.

Krakatoa erupted in 1883.  It darkened skies and lowered temps worldwide.  The eruption was so loud, it could be heard 2800 miles away.

This is a long history story that I've always found really interesting:  How a volcano and some chicanery changed the course of world history.

The French started building a canal in Panama before the US.  Things were not going well and the project was soon abandoned.  There was all kinds of equipment and (I think) land leases that were left behind.  Investors lost millions.

Fast forward to the very early 1900s.  The US has decided to build a canal to make traveling across the two oceans easier.  They had two potential spots in mind.  One of them in Panama and one in Nicaragua.  A vote in Congress was coming up for which site would be chosen.

One of the French investors (Philippe-Jean Bunau-Varilla) was really, really, really hoping they would choose Panama.  Because then he and the other investors would be able to recoup some of their money by selling those assets to the US.

But it looked pretty hopeless.  Nicaragua was CLEARLY the better choice for a canal and it was the favorite.  It was about 100 miles longer.  But the land was mostly flat, dry, and easy to work with.  Whereas in Panama, it was across mountains and swamps.

Before the vote, disaster struck!  In 1902, a volcano erupted on the Caribbean island of Martinique.  There had been a lot of US business and investment on this island, most of which was lost.

The savvy Phillippe saw his chance.  From his time in Central America, he remembered an Nicaraguan stamp.  It was an artist's drawing of a real beach town, near where the canal site would be.  This town had some small mountains in the background.  One of which was a dormant volcano.  It hadn't erupted in 800 years.  But with artistic license for the stamp, the artist had drawn some tendrils of smoke coming out of the volcano.

He acquired a bunch of these stamps and sent to two to each Congressperson.  Along with a letter that said (massively paraphrasing), "Gee, I'd sure to hate to see something like what happened in Martinique, happen in Nicaragua.  Would be a real shame to build a canal there and then have it destroyed by a volcano."

His smear campaign against Nicaragua worked.  Congress voted on Panama.  Hence why we have the Panama Canal still going strong, to this day!

In fact, they added a second set of locks in 2016.  I worked for the engineering company who won that contract.  We all crowded into the manager's office to watch the official announcement that our bid had won.  Champagne corks popped!  It was an exciting time.

Edited:  Because my geography knowledge is lousy and I always confuse these two countries for reasons I can't explain.  The other canal choice country was Nicaragua.  Not Ecuador.  Ecuador is in South America.  Not helpful at all to have a canal there, lol.

    I bet Rochester looks nasty.

Our air is so bad. People are suggested to mask while outside to help reduce issues.

  • The air quality at my job right now is 161, and it's supposed to get worse later.

And it's actually higher at my house right now (163). Ugh. My nose is so stuffed up too.
  • I’m sorry for everyone who is dealing with the fires and smoke. I am bracing myself for our so called “fire season.” The air quality here isn’t great to begin with and it’s miserable when there’s fires.

Work the next two days and then I’m off for a nice five days. I already made plans for a facial on Friday. Otherwise SSDD.

One of my coworkers learned from the pandemic how much wearing a mask helps her allergies.  She takes walks at lunch and now she always wears one.

Ugh, I'm sorry you all in the NE are having such a bad time.  Is there any word on the status of the wildfires and when they will get under control?

So much for my WFH day.  The company sent another e-mail yesterday afternoon that the power outage was only affecting one part of the building, so only those people could WFH today.  Most of us, including me, are not in that part of the building.

To add insult to injury, our power is fine.  But the "remote session" network has been down for a lot of the morning.  Don't let "remote session" fool you.  It's a new system our client set up a few months ago because most of their employees WFH.  But that's the system we are also under at the office.

Here's the weird part.  If I'm logged into the "remote session", the internet is down along with not be able to do anything else in network folders.

But if I log out of the "remote session", I'm still on the clients network except now I'm on my "local computer".  I can access my work e-mail and files saved to my desktop, but not any of the network drives or my databases.  But I can get on the internet just fine, lol.

I'm sure an IT person could explain how all of that works.  But in the meantime, I can't do any real work and it's only 30 minutes until lunch.  So I'm glad I can at least get to the internet and play around, by logging out of the remote session thing.

    No real answer.
The one near me in Calabogie area they said is close to control
    Not sure about QC

Yesterday was bad - they couldn't send water bombers because skies unsafe to fly.
  • Today is draaaaaaging.
i went to my favorite sub place for lunch, but they were closed so then I drove to subway and noticed a new (to me) pho place right next to it.  I saw they had banh mi’s, and got excited.  I don’t think I had one after we found that gem in Savannah @short+sassy.  Anyway, that was a GOOD banh mi.  I’m disappointed in this one.  Now I want to go back to Savannah!

4 hours in a car is a cakewalk for me.  Lol.  5 to my P’s and 5.5 to my brothers, so anyone who says less than 5, you got it easy!

My H and I are planning, sometime next year after we have settled in, to do a 7-10 day vacation and visit Savannah and Charleston.  Charleston is only about another 2 hours north of Savannah.

My H has never been to either place.  He also likes historical places with great architecture, so I'd think he'd like both cities.  I've only been to Charleston once, but that was 25+ years ago and I was only there for one day/night.  I remember liking it and wishing I had scheduled more time for that city.

Charleston is a beautiful city and has great restaurants. We go to that area every year - headed back in just a few weeks.
