Wedding Woes

Head to the bathroom without making a scene.

Dear Prudence,

I recently got my first full-time job and am trying to figure out how to manage my periods at work. I don’t want to give into societal stigma around menstruation by hiding my pads or bringing my purse to the bathroom with me, but I want to keep my personal health private at the same time. Being in an open office space with no privacy as a 24-year-old woman, how do I manage this at work around overly curious coworkers who watch my every move?

Re: Head to the bathroom without making a scene.

  • Most will not be watching your every move.  Wear clothing with pockets.
  • How have you been doing this your whole life at school/interships/jobs? Do it the same way. Nothing to be embarrassed about or hide necessarily, but also not appropriate (imo) to "flaunt" bodily functions, no matter how normal they are, for the sake of fighting some social stigma.
  • Tampons and pads fit in a pocket.  If you're that worried, you could see if a menstrual cup or whatever works for you.  Those should last through a workday, correct?

But I really think is your chance to practice going about your business and not worrying about anyone else in a professional setting.  This isn't the lunch table in HS or having to ask a teacher for a bathroom pass.
  • You're overthinking this. Get some clothes with pockets in them or keep your period products in a small makeup bag you can discreetly tuck under your arm when you need it. Nobody needs to know you're on your period unless you choose to tell them or make a big deal about it. This isn't about social stigma - it's about being professional and getting on with your day.

  • When you need to change your pad now while you’re out at a restaurant of something do you wave it in the air yelling “no time for free bleeding!” No? Then why would work be different? No one is watching you or cares that much. Just discretely carry it in a pocket or in your hand. You are way overthinking this.
