Wedding Woes

Wednesday

First day in our new office. Need to unpack some things and get settled. I actually like the setup, it feels fairly private even for small cubicles but not a lot of space to put things. I think they're also running some sort of white noise or something - it feels so LOUD. I'm sure i'll get used to it all ,but it's a big change!

Re: Wednesday

  • @Casadena, I'm glad you are overall liking the new office, even if there are some hiccups.  One of the unexpected perks on my WFH days is how much more quiet my house is vs. the office.  We're in an old building that my company owns and there are often construction projects going on.

It's kind of funny considering they are an engineering firm, but they also have commercial real estate that they have invested in over the years.  Most of the of the two buildings we are in are rented out to other commercial tenants.  And they have at least 1, though I think 2, other small office buildings they own.  They also own parking lots near their buildings.

For one of their lots, they used to have an interesting arrangement with the restaurant in front of it.  It was an employee lot during the weekday, but any employees assigned to that lot had to be out of it by 5PM.  Because weekdays after 5 and weekends was when the restaurant was renting that lot for their valet drivers to put cars.  Alas, that restaurant did not survive COVID.  I don't think it ever reopened after the shutdown.  It was a 4-star restaurant that had awesome deals for Happy Hour (including food) and a $20 lunch special on Fridays.  Those were the days!

Still fighting my cold and didn't get enough sleep last night because of it, but I'm being a trooper and still trudging along through my work day.  I'm home today and am going to use my lunch hour for a nap.  Another unexpected perk for WFH, lol.

  • @levioosa, where are you?
After my annual/pap in Sept, they saw something abnormal so my doctor told me I’d revisit it next near.  I tried to make an appt a year and a day later but her books weren’t open online yet.  I tried a week later. Nope.  Not yet. I forgot to keep trying and it’s only Dec 6th but i was reminded to make that appt yesterday. I logged in, and her annual exam workload is one day in Feb.  Then it goes to Nov 20th then Dec 5th. Her folow up/office visits are fine, openings in January.  Can they only book so many annuals per year? And people already have Sept and October booked? Of course I don’t want to wait 12 months for the next one, let alone 14. I can’t change doctors to see if someone in her office can take me (nor do I want to) and I’ve been on hold for like 1 hour already.  Was hoping someone could squeeze me in if i tried calling but usually what I see online is what they can offer me. Why is it like this?

  • @CharmedPam that stuff is so incredibly annoying. I hope you get it soon.

I got ahold of their answering service and she saw the same openings I did. She also thought it was weird, so the actual office will call me back. Who would have thought I’d have trouble booking a physical 10 months ahead?

  • Ugh that’s annoying @CharmedPam “you need to come in but we can’t give you an appointment”

I totally in sad mode, a mom I worked with on pta stuff last year and this year passed away last night after a brief battle with cancer (it was caught late, just a coupe months ago).  She was older than me (in her 50s), her older children are in their 20s but she had a 9-yr-old too.  I’m completely broken hearted at the suddenness as well as the news itself and literally keep crying at work.

Dipping out of work a bit early, I have my kids’ P/T conferences.  I’m happy with the school years they’re having so they should go well.  I have had some great talks with oldest’s school SW, particularly about a new student group starting next week that she thinks will be a good fit for DD.
Was going to make individual chicken pot pies for dinner tonight but defaulting to the pound of pasta I make every Sunday for when there’s a day where I’m having “a day”. Which crying headaches fall under.
  • @ei34, I am so sorry to hear about your friend!  It's especially awful when it's someone relatively young.  And fairly sudden and unexpected.

  • I'm dragging today. It's so cold and I only have 10 work days left in 2023 and I just don't want to do anything. On the upside, I get to have tacos with a friend tonight, so at least it's breaking out of SSDD.

I'm so sorry about that mom, @ei34. It's so awful how quickly things can completely change for a family.
  • That's so terrible, @ei34, I'm sorry.

I also do not want to work, but I'm forcing myself to.  I've got some biggish projects right now and I like those better than the little bitty things that take up time, but don't really move the needle on things.

I worked from home today b/c they were supposed to be testing the fire alarms and having the Fire Department inspect them.  I didn't want Harley by herself when they went off b/c they're so loud and the strobing lights are headache inducing.  They went off once at 9:00 am and IDK whose apartment the FD looked in, but it wasn't mine.  Oh well, Bossman was out of the office today too, so it was a good day to work from home.  Also, my router is apparently going out, so I'll have to be here for a bit tomorrow so they can come in and replace it (it's a contracted company).  It is nice to work and just be able to reach out and pet my cat though.

An old good friend has come into town and we're going out tomorrow.  Friday I get my shots, have an appointment with our family financial advisor, and see the new Studio Ghibli movie.  I'm also planning a group event of my friends to go see/pet reindeer.  It just sounds light, silly, and fun and everyone really seems to be looking forward to it.
  • Horrible news @ei34, so sorry to hear that.

  • Oh how horrible @ei34. That is so hard. I just found out a friend from college past away last month - she was 59 and died from Type 1 diabetes complications. She didn't have children but shocking to all her knew her.

I had some appointments earlier today then ran some errands - had to return some shoes to Zappos. I had ordered two pairs of navy booties with the plan to keep the one I liked the best. Of course I liked the most expensive one. When I got home from everything I started wrapping presents. I'm just about done but have taken a break for dinner a putting my feet up. I was up way too early - H was coughing so am dragging. The last few presents might have to wait until tomorrow. I need to make some spiced nuts also. Luckily they don't take very long!
  • @ei34 that’s awful. I’m so sorry.

@CharmedPam depending on what the pap says you definitely don’t want to wait. There’s a lot of different changes than can happen from “eh, no HPV and some cells that just aren’t quite normal (ASC-US)” to “patient has HPV confirmed and there’s some high grade changes happening and we need to do more management right now (HPV with HSIL).” If you’re really concerned and you really can’t get in with your PCP you could always go to Planned Parenthood and bring a copy of your results and they can help too. I hate healthcare and I work in it. I’m fighting with my mom’s providers right now to manage her care correctly and I hate telling my patients “you just have to call every day for a last minute cancellation.” To be fair to providers, sometimes we’ll send a message with results to schedule asap and then the people scheduling put the patient super far out. But once something is out of our inbox it’s hard to keep track of. So the provider might be okay squeezing you in but people scheduling won’t or need express permission to do so.

  • Someone at the docs office called back and got me in a year and a week later.  Way better than 14 months later. My doctor didnt order one right away, said we’d revisit in a year. Should I be more worried?  It’s most definitely an insurance coverage thing.

  • @CharmedPam maybe you could schedule a telehealth appointment to go over results? It’s more comforting to know details than “it wasn’t normal but come back later.”

  • Moving to a new office space can definitely take some adjustment! I remember feeling really overwhelmed on my first day in a cubicle too - it seemed so small and crammed compared to my previous setup. But you're right, in time you learn how to organize the space efficiently. As for the noise, some white noise or soft music played throughout may take getting used to if you're used to a quieter environment. Hopefully your coworkers are understanding that it's an adjustment period. Bringing in a small plant or some photos can help make the cubicle feel more personal. Wishing you the best as you settle into your new surroundings - I'm sure within a week it will start feeling normal!
