Wedding Woes

Thursday

It's Friday eve!  Whoot!

Woke up to the news that Lewis Hamilton might be going to drive for Ferrari in 2025!!  I'm somewhat shocked, but can also see how it's a good move for him.

I'm going with a group of friends to see Jawbreaker at the movies tonight.  I haven't seen it in forever and I love the movie, so I'm really excited.  I barely remember anything, TBH.

I also decided to just host a party at my place for my birthday.  I'm going to do a big mocktail bar, b/c a lot of my friends have become sober-curious, just want to see what I'm drinking, etc.  My other friend is going to DJ for me, which I'm super excited about, b/c he's awesome.  I did ask him to do some live spinning too, so hopefully he will.  Just having a good old fashioned Gen X houseparty!

Otherwise, SSDD.

Re: Thursday

  • @VarunaTT the birthday party sounds lovely!

I'm in a MOOD the last few days. I know AF is coming this week but it feels extra bad this month. Just very crabby and angry at everyone for no real reason. My boss asked me to do something very quick and minor this morning and my brain immediately went "The AUDACITY, are you seriously asking me to do my JOB right now? WTF". So I'm a PMS-y mess today.

On a positive note, i get free lunch today and we got to put in our own orders - so i'll be sleeping with my eyes open for the afternoon after I eat my giant cheeseburger and waffle fries with spicy feta dip for lunch today. Another positive is that my boys have been extremely sweet the last few days. It's a nice break from the extreme toddler-ness that's been happening lately.
  • @VarunaTT, your birthday party sounds great!  Since you are a mocktail connoisseur, are there any/many sugar-free options in that world?

@Casadena, I hope you start feeling in a better mood.  But yay happy kids and a free lunch.

I'm in a 90-minute town-hall virtual meeting.  Almost 60 minutes of nothing but org charts, so far.  Good times.  It's being led by someone I really dislike, so that is not helping.  I'm not even sure why I have such negative strong feelings for him.  He's arrogant and dismissive of "underlings", but I rarely interact with him and he hasn't done anything horrible to me.

Long story short, we ran out of food for Izzy yesterday.  We made do mixing up rice, pumpkin puree, and chicken breast.

Normally, Izzy is a self feeder which is great and makes life easier.  But apparently not so much a self feeder when she especially loves the food!  She voraciously gobbled it up.  While she was in the living room, my H decided to put the leftover rice in her bowl.  Just in case she got hungry because she is used to always having food in her bowl.  She plowed through that also as soon as she saw it, lol.

At any rate, I will need to swing by Walmart after work to pick up food for her and a few other necessities.

  • @CharmedPam, I would love to see Madonna in concert!  That sounds awesome.  I'm glad you were able to get a reasonable-ish car ride rate and double-checked the pick-up spot to change it.

My H and I came very close to having an Uber nightmare when we were on a Lake Tahoe trip.  We took an Uber out to a company that had a sledding hill on its property.  It's about 30 minutes before the place is going to close and people are starting to amble back to the entrance.

My H and I call for an Uber.  There is NO cell phone service!  I didn't think it was that remote, but apparently it was.  The facility didn't have a landline.  Employees verified there isn't usually cell phone service there.  Cue panic!  We're asking other patrons if their phone is working.  One of those people offered to give us a ride back to Tahoe.  Angels!  I am still so grateful to that couple!

We tried to give them $40 when we got back, as a thank-you.  But they refused to take it.

  • I would love to see her in concert too but I have such a hard time with some of the recent backlash against phones (from years ago if I remember) and now the tardiness.

I'm not a normal night owl.  Showing up hours late is so disrespectful.  I get that shows don't start 'on time' but some of the recent antics seem like she's not getting her ish together.    That said, I hear these are great shows!  Just not for me when I would need to essentially plan a full half day to be out of commission if she's as late as she was for some of her recent ones.

Something like that happened to me too. I was at a hotel in a suburb.  A SUBURB with fine cell service but this place didnt use uber or lyft.  Just taxi’s and I couldn’t get one. I was trying to surprise my parents for their retirement party. For a quick second I thought my only option was to call and tell them I was in town and let the cat out of the bag.  But the lovely manager said she’d drive me! Also wouldn’t accept money.
    Tennessee hospitality!

oh I agree @banana468.  It’s so frustrating that she doesn’t start on time and it is disrespectful.  Yet, it hasn’t hurt her ticket sales.  She’s been doing it for years. I knew this when I bought the ticket and that’s why we moved it from Thursday to Friday. What sucks IS determining the transportation! Like people have to plan and no one wants to sit 2 extra hours either.  I heard she has a DJ from 8:30-9:30 but still doesn’t get on right after that.  And also - most her fans are 40+, like myself.  We don’t want to stay up that late.  We’d love a matinee concert, AARP discount dinner at 5, and then home for Bonanza.  In bed by 9. Lol.

  • The birthday plan sounds fun and festive @VarunaTT and lol at the pissed at everyone mode @Casadena
Leaving fans waiting awhile is beyond rude. I’m not really a Madonna fan (I just don’t know many songs) but if I was I’d be left with a bad taste in my mouth.

Pretty SSDD over here, very happy it’s Friday Eve.
  • @VarunaTT that sounds like a great party!

I have a huge problem with performers being late. I get it, sometimes there are small delays. I won’t hold technical difficulties against anyone.  But habitually being late and having an ego about it? No. You are not that special and it’s disrespectful. People took time off of work, they arranged child care and rides, and they may have to be up early in the morning. Your fans are your pay. So get off your high horse and be respectful.

Years ago we saw Lana Del Rey and she was almost TWO HOURS late. When she got up on the stage there was zero apology, she looked bored and like it was a chore to perform, and she seemed really drunk and/or high. She sounded great still but SIL A and I were so turned off by that we had a hard time enjoying her music afterwards. I’ve been to a lot of concerts and I’ve never felt that disrespected as an attendee.

Work today. It’s raining a lot here so you know it’s basically a California apocalypse. My work bff’s last day was yesterday and im still sad about it.

  • Hard agree on the late concert ridiculousness. I'm very happy that the only concerts weve been to in the last few years have been at an outdoor venue with super strict end times because it's in the middle of a residential neighborhood - everything starts and end on time!

That a bummer to hear about LDR @levioosa , i've been a big fan of hers for a long time but never seen her in concert.
  • @CharmedPam she's 65!  She's literally old enough to be my mother and to start collecting social security!  Artistically I'm loving her stuff but I can't with the rules and attitude.

We're seeing a show next weekend.  I'll have to pay attention to the time it's supposed to start and the actual time.  I give some leeway when you can see people still filing into venues but my grace window is about 20-30 minutes if you don't have an opener after which I think you're disrespectful.

Years ago I saw Gorillaz (like 22 years ago!) and they were super late.  It was a standing only venue in Philly and I was SO irritated.
  • Prudie must be on vacation or something bc there hasn't been anythign new this week. I can post some of the other advice columns if ppl are interested? Otherwise can wait til next week.

I'd be interested, if you have the time.

Also from the '80s, Pat Benatar is one of my all-time favorite singers.  I've seen her perform a number of times.  She's 71 and still preforms!  She was in her '60s the last time I saw her.  Her voice hasn't aged at all and was still powerful.

The black leather mini skirts she used to wear are long gone.  She was wearing an ankle length cardigan sweater.  My H said she looked like a grandma.  I said she IS a grandma!  What do you expect, lol.

We saw her probably 12 years ago and is still one of the best shows weve ever been to!

  • I had some friend who just saw her in NYC last night and said she went on at 9:30 if that helps @CharmedPam.

I have refused to buy tickets for artists I would really love to see b/c of their reputation for being late/last minute cancellations.  Madonna, Lauryn Hill, GnR....I'm sure there's more, but those are the most recent ones I can think of.  I assumed Wu-Tang would be late but they started 15" late.  It's just so ridiculous, my money and time are worthwhile and if an artist doesn't think so, that's totally fine, but I'm no longer a fan.  Aerosmith not only came out on time, but did 3 encores and ran to the lawn area to set up a stage and do some songs out there.

Jewel and Melissa Etheridge are touring together and I'm seriously considering that concert.  Melissa is just an astounding performer in person and I've always liked Jewel.

Also, my party, with DJ, is starting at 6:30.   I'm turning 47, I'll need to nap in the first place and I don't want people staying until midnight!!

Oh also, when we saw Wu-Tang, apparently Bentonville, Arkansas just closes down at 10 pm?  We couldn't get an Uber or Lyft and all the taxies were booked.  We had walked there, so we walked back (and that ended up being great b/c it was standing room only, so getting moving again helped us not be so sore the next day), but it was a bit scary.
  • I saw Madonna roughly 20 years ago when I was in college (and no I can’t believe I was in college 20 years ago) and I remember her being great but also late to come on. And again that was 20 years ago!
  • Your mock tail and DJ party sounds awesome @VarunaTT!!
  • I knew I was forgetting to respond to someone.

@short+sassy there are LOADS of sugar free options.  It just kind of depends on what you want.  I've been impressed by the "health" options.  My favorite NA beeer right now has only 70 calories/pint, which is really nice.

I wonder if she did that because it was a Wednesday night and will think Friday nights are weekends and people can wait?  I think we’ll shoot for 9:30 and sit and chat if we have to but I have NO desire to watch a DJ.  My coworker goes tonight so I’ll ask her - but again, maybe she treats Friday and Saturday nights differently?

word on the 6:30 start lol.

Billy Joel & Stevie Nicks are touring.  I’d love to go, but the venue for Chicago doesn’t make it worth it.
Edit; Moot point.  I just checked and they’re playing while I’m in Alaska.

Melissa Etheridge and the Indigo Girls are playing a show together this August at the outdoor venue I mentioned in a prior post and i'm super excited about it! Hopefully I can get tickets!

Thanks!  I'll have to look more into it.  Most cocktails=sugary.  So I assumed most mocktails=sugary.

It's not so much the alcohol I'm trying to avoid, it's the sugar.  Though I have cut back a lot on alcohol because of the empty calories.

I think of a mocktail as being a fruity drink.  Most sodas have done a great job with no sugar versions.  But a good tasting no/low sugar fruit juice is rare.

I found an outstanding no-sugar Paloma mixer on Amazon.  But it's $16 for 32 ounces (eyeroll).  Though I do remember you saying mocktail mixes are usually pretty expensive also, lol.  But I like fun drink creations, so sometimes it's worth it!

Surprisingly beer, wine, and hard liquor actually lower blood sugar levels.  As long as it's not a sweet/dessert wine or a sugary mix is added.
