Question about furniture

I need to replace my IKEA couches.  They've been great, but they were never meant to last and they're just aging and getting uncomfortable.

My only real wants are that it is up high on legs, has arms, and I still would like to have an orange couch.  If I could get a sleeper, cool, but not a requirement.  I do want a sectional with a chaise on the right, but I'm flexible on that one.

Anyway, I've been shopping around and for a quality couch, I'm seeing mainly upwards of $1500 with most of what I like falling in the $2500-$3200.  

I was casually discussing this with my mother and she about fell over when I said how much I was looking at spending.  Is this a high number for a quality couch?  I really kinda want something I'm not replacing for.....well ever, but at least 10 years.  Do you have other recommendations for quality furniture?

So far, looking at Ethan Allen, Ashley Furniture (they have no orange), Haverty's (they have no orange), and Crate and Barrel.  I'd like to avoid Wayfair and the like, because they're just not lasting quality I've noticed.  I don't dislike them, but I don't want to be replacing stuff in 5 years.  We also have a Slumberland (no orange at all, they used to) and a few other more local/small furniture stores, but no orange.  I could be convinced to switch to blue, but....I don't really want to.

    Honestly i think those are great prices for a quality piece that you don't want to replace, especially in a specific color. I didn't wince at all when i read it!

    That’s definitely in line with what we’ve bought recently. We’ve had really good experiences with Raymour & Flannigan if you have those near you/ they have what you want. For comparison we got a beautiful oversized leather chair for ~$800 and our living room set (with holiday sales) for $3000.

    I'm not that experienced with furniture, especially not quality pieces, but I feel like even mediocre quality couches can run in that $1500 range.  My baseline for mediocre prices is Rooms to Go commercials, lol.

    Another option is to check out re-upholstering prices.  I doubt that's cheap.  But it might be cheaper if you can find the perfect high end piece at the $1500 end, but it doesn't come in orange.

    My friend is so funny.  She has an armchair that originally came in a red patent leather.  As the fabric started getting shabby and scratched, she searched for months to find the exact one.  She found it at a warehouse in LA and bought a big bolt of it, lol.  I think it was $400 to get the chair re-upholstered locally, but that was providing them with the fabric.  It is a fabulous chair and that red patent leather is *chef's kiss*.

    I think that is ball park for a couch, so doesn't seem outlandishly expensive.  It's the type of thing that people don't buy very often, so maybe your mom just forgot how expensive couches can be?  I bought mine for $750, and it was heavily discounted and middle of the line for quality.  
    If we could have gotten the couch that was in the house when we moved .... that would have been acceptable.  It was also, ironically, orange, but had the wooden pieces on the sides that we like so much.  
    There have been times when I wish we had gotten a sleeper couch, but I have my folding cot now so that is just easier.

    @short+sassy reupholstering requires more work from me just than arranging delivery.  I think I could probably be really happy with doing that, but the likelihood of me following through is just not there.  I know myself well enough.

    Okay, I just wanted to make sure (and make sure there wasn't something better out there too!).  I did ask Mom how much they paid for their couch about 8 years ago and it was $700.  I just reminded her that all prices have gone up and her $700 then couch pretty much looked like the $1500 couches I was looking at now.

    Oh good!! They also will deliver and set up and make sure everything is good before you accept the delivery. And they have a protection plan that covers a lot.

    I don’t really have anything to add other than I feel like the couch prices are accurate, but I’m still salty about how expensive they are. You’re telling me if I was to furnish a home with decent quality furniture now I’m looking at $15k+ for a two bedroom home? That’s outrageous. 

    We’ve also bought from Living Spaces before for our other furniture. It’s not the best quality ever but it’s also far from the worst.

    @levioosa A friend and I were discussing that very scenario.  We've all moved on from college furniture, but we'd like to move on from Wayfair and the like.  But the nicer pieces are soooo expensive (which I do understand why, but I still dislike it).  Now, you can buy your house...in 5 years do the furniture...and about the time that's paid off, you'll probaly need a car too.  It feels un-ending, just trying to have decent products surrounding you.

    I read an article years ago that talked about the "20 things you have to buy when you get your first house that no one tells you about".  But written to be funny, as opposed to an advice article.

    One of the items is new furniture.  Because your futon couch from college suddenly doesn't seem "good enough" anymore.

    My current couch (sectional with left side chaise, but it was available in right side too) is from Raymour&Flanigan, I can vouch that their protection plan is awesome.  
    I usually go with R&F, or crate & barrel or PB.  Those prices are not unreasonable.

    We bought DS1 and DIL a couch for a belated wedding gift two years ago. It was totally customized (arms, leg, back, cushion type and upholstery). It cost a little over $2000. I can't remember the name of the company but it was a midwestern brand.
