Wedding Woes

Wednesday

Morning! I feel hungover this morning and didn't drink anything last night, so not sure what that's about. Getting my hair cut tonight right after work and I'm VERY excited about it - we also have 15 minutes chair massages at work today! The file i'm trying to work on is irritating me and keeps closing for no reason. Overall pretty normal day!

Re: Wednesday

  • oh! G is going to a bday party this sunday for a 6 year old in his class that i don't know. The invite had minecraft characters on it...do you think a small minecraft lego set would be cool? Or should i just do a gift card or something? WE don't do video games yet, so i'm super unfamiliar. My go-to gift is magna-tiles, but if this kiddo has a more specific interest, i'd love to do something related.

My nephews love Minecraft @Casadena.  It’s really cute because there’s three of them and they get an allotted “amount of time with it” but the younger 2 spend their time watching the older one and have NO idea they’re getting the short end of the stick by not playing it.  They’re content just watching.  Lol.  But kids love lego so I think that’s perfect.

SSDD for me.  I have to escape soon to go to a seamstress over “lunch”.  Our annual sales conference is next week and my light spring blazer/jacket has no button enclosure.  I’m hoping it wont cost much to add one button to close it.  I think I only paid $30 for it and it’s an awesome jacket (edit for link; https://a.co/d/7kQ6O6t ) The women in our office and even other offices are so panicked on what to wear and buying up a storm.  Everyone dresses to impress but has the money for it. The only thing I purchased was strappy dress sandals (which I’ll need anyway), the blazer and two blouses at $25 each. The rest is stuff I already own. Clearly I’m not dressing to impress too too much.

  • @CharmedPam, I love that jacket!  Appropriate for the office, but with some extra style compared to a typical blazer.  Where is the conference?  Anywhere fun?

Quite the kerfluffle going on at work!  Along with me being given more responsibilities, which I'm glad about.

    Buckle up. It's a story.

The Procurement manager (T) sent me a Teams message, saying that he and L were going to be conference calling me shortly.  Surprising, because I've never had him contact me or done any work for him.

They called me about 30 minutes later.  For some background, work is exploding right now.  There is hiring and some restructuring going on.  So, we have a Procurement department at my work, specifically for this client and their projects.  I'm going to call that department WP to differentiate it from the client's Procurement department.  WP is the one I was running by myself for 5+ years and then they've shut me out of it for the last year and hired new people which ruffled my feathers.  I know it wasn't a reflection on me.  They wanted my work to focus more on steel.  But still.  I felt like I wasn't given a promotion to a higher paying managerial position that rightfully should have been mine.

Okay, sour grapes over.  Back to the conversation.  The client's Procurement department needs more help and apparently my name has come up a couple times in meetings.

The other person on the call is L.  He's a fairly new employee.  I know him better and had thought we'd be working together more, but we really haven't yet.  He started the conversation saying something like, "Congratulations, you're now going to be working in the Procurement department with us!"  Me with an upbeat, but questioning tone, "Oh!  Okay."  He laughed and said it's possible this is the first time I'm hearing it.  I laughed also and said it was.

We all then had a conversation where I talked about my current workload and my procurement experience.  They aren't taking me off of steel, which I was glad about.  But do want me to start taking more of a role with them, though didn't really give me any details about that except for one task that has come up.  Neither of them are in NOLA, but they will be here in March and said we'd all meet again when they are here.

Main point:  What I really wanted to ask if the client's Procurement department is hiring and can I apply to be a direct employee, lol.  But seriously.  The more I'm entrenched and an asset to different managers and departments, the more power I have for my company to keep me and let me work 100% remote when I move.

What they need help with more immediately is the kerfluffle part.  One of the employees in WP got in a bit of a nasty fight with the Doc Control manager.  He sits in the same cube room as me and I already knew something had gone down.  She had internally rejected 18 POs he had sent in.  According to him, she called him and was immediately yelling at him about what was wrong.  She is great at her job and upper management loves her.  But she is awful to work with and doesn't know how to treat people.  With that said, I've heard her speak loudly and in a demanding way to people.  But I've never heard her yell.

She sent 4 e-mails with the original e-mails attached to them and had a lot of scathing words about what he did wrong and his attitude.  T forwarded them to me.  She also included our big boss in the e-mails.  Oof!  It was rough.  I was asked to fix the problems mentioned in her e-mail and have them resent.  Though thankfully just internally and not to the vendors.

The WP person also has a strong personality.  He will also speak loudly and with a bit of a condescending tone when he is upset.  I heard some of his end of the conversation he had with her.  She definitely exaggerated his "attitude" in her later e-mail.  But I don't think either of them handled it correctly.  Though more her than him.

I'm just trying to stay down and stay out of it!  And hope that I come out sparkling with this first thing I've been asked to do.  I'm going to send one e-mail first and have it blessed by someone in DC before I send the others.

  • Yay for not only more bargaining power, but the good reputation @short+sassy.

I think the lego idea is cute @Casadena.  Also, if you have a Box Lunch store close, they always have really cool branded merchandise.  They can get pricey, but there are lots of options in a varied price range.

Just grinding away at work.  I'm trying to figure out how to not be an emotion manager for people at work.  It's hard, but I'm trying.
  • @Casadena our default is a gift card honestly. That way it reduces what the kid gets and they can have their own reign if it's a specific interest.

@CharmedPam oh that is cute! My personal vice about it is no buttons to close. I rarely use them but I like having buttons.

@Jen4948 i swear by lists and calendars lol
  • It's been a busy few days.

M is mostly on the mend but he tweaked his back this morning so that was great. Luckily he's wfh and can put something on it - like heating pad etc.
He'll be 34 this year, and I joke it's really just down hill, and although I 100% agree he's in pain, I couldn't resist giggling.
    He's pretty sure it happened reaching down for his hoodie while getting dressed lol {hence my giggling}

Weather is suppose to be above freezing next week - so hello incoming spring :D

I do need to be sure BK's raincoat and splash pants still fit.
If not, we'll be grabbing some in a couple weeks when I'm off and doing groceries with her.
I did recently get some spring shoes, so I'm very much dying to wear them and begging weather to warm up so I can also stop wearing winter boots (again)

Finally got more trash bags and bag 6 to donation is ready to go PLUS maybe bag 7!
I'm telling you, you couldn't tell we're decluttering because it still looks so nuts.

@short+sassy I hope you can stay down and out of it and get through this well. I would document everything you've witnessed in case you need it later but hold on to the documentation for now.

As for me, it's tax season. I was successful at finding a second job to supplement my existing one but I have lots of work to do. I'm also in several plays! Just hoping I can keep all those balls in the air.
Thanks!  Good to hear from you.

Sounds like work/finances are great, albeit extra busy.  And being in some plays sounds like fun!

Thanks, it is! I'm also trying to balance getting together with family and friends, especially my current BF, along with these things. I gotta admit that I can't wait for the end of tax season. It's good to hear from all of you too.
  • Alabama has started shutting down IVF. Because an unhinged religious based court opinion held that embroys in a dish are children. It’s an outrage and heartbreaking for all the families impacted and just a horrifying time to be a women.

The concurring opinion even quotes “gods will”. I can’t.
  • I misunderstood this Alabama thing!  I thought they would fund it more and take it seriously because it considers the embryos to be children.  This is insane, so many people use it as their hope to start a family.  But then again, I wouldn't want to work in IVF if dropping a test tube means I might be on the hook for murder.

heartbreaking and makes me so scared for this upcoming election. I don't understand how people don't understand how unhinged this is.
  • For you ladies in the states, if you would find the need to come to Canada .... please let me know. I live in a spot that currently has wonderful touristy things and are also SAFE *hint hint*
  • I took a break from news for a little bit for my mental health. With the elections I’ve been trying to be more informed again and every time I seek out news I am just sick to my stomach. This is horrifying.

I saw an article about that.  It's like just when you think the religious uber-right can't get any worse and more nonsensical, they find a way to top themselves.

While the worst is for women and families trying to have children, I also feel bad for the IVF places that might suddenly have to close.  The owners left with bills/expensive equipment/leases for a business that is no longer viable and their employees who are suddenly without jobs.

But I'm sure they will all be fine because Alabama is so rife with great opportunities and well-paying jobs //s.

It's just a lot more complex and more money for social programs to help ACTUAL children instead of hypothetical ones, so some Republicans keep pounding their drums for idiotic legislation like this.
