Tuesday

I like my shirt today and my hair is "settling" after a so-so haircut a couple weeks ago, so overall a good morning. I slept SO hard last night and still feel a bit groggy. On my own with the little dudes tonight so any good vibes you want to send for bedtime will be appreciated :)

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Also taco Tuesday so make use of the excuse.  I actually ironically enough had an enchilada in my homechef box so I don’t need to go out. Yay.
was everyone panicking about Facebook/Instagram? No? Just me? Lol
This weekend when I gassed up at a station along the way to see my parents, I later got a text from Capital One asking of the $151 purchase at the gas station was valid (it never costs more than $40 because I have a small tank). It wasn’t. They took care of it RIGHT away, took off the charge and sent me a new one.  Snaps to Capital One… however they have a shopping reward section for extra % off certain stores and i found some new shoes in one of those merchants so i hope they’re still there when my new card arrives.  I’m all about saving every penny I can.  But also- spending on stupid shit the next minute that would make you shake your head at me.
yes @Casadena, therapy is so good for the soul! Glad you found someone you like and can unload.  I’m sure you have a lot to talk about.

  • I also love that CapitalOne sends me an alert after every purchase @charmedpam
  • Hold up. Today is March 5th.  Not May 5th.  And I told a few people it was cinco de mayo today too. I also wondered why no “may the 4th be with you” memes were posted yesterday.

  • I now have numerous text messages going b/c FB/Insta not working and we all need our mental health/dopamine hit convos.

Bossman is stressing me out.  I'm tired of hashing that out, so we'll leave it there.

@Casadena, that was also my favorite part.  I felt like I had a cheerleader, honestly, and it was so helpful.  I kinda want to go back, just for that feeling.

Otherwise, SSDD.  Going to see my mom today after work.  Trying to get back into the physical and mental swing of things from these 2 really busy weeks.
  • Haven't been able to see dr yet, but I think my belly button is infected somewhere still.
I have to pick up meds tonight {typical meds} so I may see if pharmacist has idea.

Otherwise I gotta call clinic at 8am and try to get in. Pain in butt.

Nice weather here though. I think there's air pressure change because I've been battling a wicked headache
  • @CharmedPam, you're two months early for Cinco de Mayo.  But it's always the right time for tacos and enchiladas!

That's so weird it was the right gas station, just wrong amount.  I wonder what the story with that is.  Technical error or shenanigans of an employee.

I was completely exhausted yesterday.  I hadn't gotten enough sleep and it also wasn't a good quality on Sunday night.  I tried to do better last night.  It wasn't great either because it was storming, but I'm feeling better than I thought I would.

When we went to bed, I told my H that I was worried the dog was going to keep me up after I had already had such a bad day.  I'm her comfort person when she is scared and she'll climb all over me.  He told me to wake him up if I'm not sleeping and he'll go sleep on the couch with her.  At 1AM, I did exactly that!  It was such a restful sleep after that.

I was scoping out places to initially move to when we go to Cincinnati.  There are SO many rental scams out there nowadays that I'm trying to be hyper aware.  I'll probably just stick to an apartment complex for that reason.  But am worried most of them aren't going to be cool with a shorter-term lease.

I saw one on Craig's List that had a phone number embedded in the photo.  In the written description, it said the phone number in the pic should be local and the area code should be 540.  I looked it up and that's for Louisville, KY.  Not what I would call local, but I guess it's not crazy off.  However, the phone number on the photo was area code 760, which is in South FL, lol.

Unfortunately, there are some smart and sophisticated scammers out there.  But I am so glad most of them are this dumb.  Like if they'd just spent 20 seconds reading the ad/pics they stole, they could have taken that sentence out.

  • Lol @short+sassy, ever since I was little, I always got the M months mixed up, and they’re not even next to each other.
The correct charge was also on the cc.  151 was additional.  And I actually double checked the screen to make sure my transaction closed and it was ready for the next person. so I have no idea how that exact amount came up?
it’s a very good idea to rent to get the lay of the land.  You can get familiar with the area and where you want to lay down roots by living in the area for a bit.

  • My therapist and I are so well-matched. I love her to pieces.  I've backed off on going as much as I did in the beginning, but I still think I'll see her at least every couple of months for awhile.  It's great to have the outlet and have her validate things for me that I may otherwise downplay for reasons.  Anyway, therapy with the right therapist is the best!

SSDD otherwise.  Tuesday, blerg.  It's also rainy and gross outside.  I'm hoping it clears out later so DH and I can at least take a walk.  We started interval running again yesterday.  I love/hate it, but it has so many benefits in other areas of my life.  We need to get back to hiking too.  We fell off all of it after the summer last year with BIL living here and other things being in transition.  I'm glad we're putting effort into getting back on it.

I panicked a little that my FB was hacked as I've had a few friends deal with hacks recently, but I'm glad they got the word out super fast that it was down.

The funny thing is, if we had continued our plan to move to Ocala, we could easily have bought a house from afar to have a place to move right into.  But it's a much smaller area and the kind of homes we were looking at were pretty homogenous and less than 20 years old.

Cincinatti has a LOT more variety in neighborhoods and houses.  I was surprised how much.  It would be almost impossible to buy a house from afar without it potentially being a lot of hassle.  I could see going under contract.  Going up to see the house for the inspection and in two minutes I see something that is a dealbreaker.  There are also a lot of residential houses on busy streets and business corridors.  I don't want any part of that.

Oh!  This was a weird thing I hated about Cincinnati, but I'm sure will get somewhat used to it.  So many parts of the city have the first lane of the road also being for parking.  You're driving along a main street.  Everything is looking good.  And then you see a parked car in your lane a couple blocks up and have to merge over to avoid it.  I mention this because one of the houses we especially liked didn't have it's own garage/driveway.  You had to park in that first lane of traffic.  And just for good measure, it was also on a curve.  I could definitely see my car getting hit on a monthly basis in a set-up like that.

There were just so many houses we liked from the listing.  But the minute we saw it in person, it was obviously a nope!  And that's just from the outside, lol.

There was only one house we saw the inside of because there was an open house while we were there.  I LOVED that house!  Beautiful neighborhood.  Built in the 1880s with so many architectural features.  But it was a 2-story house (plus basement) and didn't have a bathroom on the main floor.  That house was a good lesson that I really want a bathroom on each level, lol.  The second floor was such a bizarre layout.  You got to the top of the stairs, but it was a tiny landing with no hallway off of it.  The bathroom was on the right and the master was on the left, but you had to STEP UP to get into either room.

I was picturing trying to negotiate that at 3am and I have to pee.  I'd have to step down from the bedroom onto the small landing.  Then step up into the bathroom.  My husband or I might fall to our death down the stairs.  No thank-you!

And those are just two examples from about a dozen where we almost immediately weeded places out.

@MissKittyDanger feel better!   @Casadena sometimes that’s needed, someone to feel feelings with! @CharmedPam Feliz cinco de marzo! Never a bad time for a taco anyway

A sort of higher up at work (same level but she was given more power this year) who has been a thorn in my side all year (yes, this is the Girl Scout mom, no, it’s not about cookie sales) crossed a line yesterday afternoon with a new protocol for two students.  I love my job but total hill I’ll die on. Immediately texted my building union rep who said oh hell no and got our district union head involved who also thinks the protocol is BSC. They are meeting with the teacher and our actual boss in a little while. So I’m anxious but glad that I spoke up (my coworkers are too).

Good luck!  Always helpful when you show up armed with people and data that says, "This will not work and here's why!" vs. "This protocol is stupid and you're stupid and I want you to buy the cookies you stole from me you jerk."

These are such northern/midwestern things! The road thing is so common in Buffalo- driving down major roads in the city and all of the sudden you have street parking. You get used to it when you’re here long enough but it’s definitely jarring when you first encounter it.

The no downstairs bathroom is also super common in older homes here! Our first house in Toledo had an upstairs bathroom and no lower- had we stayed there longer we would have tried to figure out how to do a half bath somewhere (we had a huge pantry that would have been the most logical choice. It’s probably a result of older homes not having original indoor plumbing and it being easier to convert bedrooms or build out bathrooms on a second floor than the first?
  • @short+sassy - no main floor bathroom is my biggest complaint about our house. We have 3 bathroom, which is great - but we also have a split level and so always have to go up or down 7-8 steps to use the facilities.

We looked at a few homes in our area that had the weird step-up/landing thing too! I don't know how those people aren't falling down the stairs regularly!!!

Also, we used a realtor to find a rental when we were moving here from out of state! It was fantastic - super helpful to get the same kind of info we'd get if we were buying and definitely "legit". We then used her services a year later when we bought our house.
  • @charlotte989875, thanks for the perspective, lol!  I have never experienced anything like that with a lane being both for driving and for parking.  I'll try to give Cincinnati a little more grace if it is a Midwest thing and not just a Cincy thing.

I'll have to ask my husband about the indoor plumbing thing.  I wouldn't think it's easier to install it on the 2nd floor as compared to the first, but perhaps not.  I laugh every time I see a basement pic with a toilet that has no walls around it.  My H said there is a reason almost every basement has a toilet.  I don't remember it exactly, but it has something to do with the plumbing.  There needs to be an outlet (maybe for venting?) on the lowest floor.  There are other ways to do it, but installing a toilet is the easiest one.

I'm definitely open to adding a bathroom for the right house, but there has to be a space where it would make sense and that is not always true.

Basements were another puzzling piece for me.  I realize a finished basement can be included in the square footage; however, it seemed like it usually wasn't.  Usually.  But then sometimes it was and I'd be super confused as to why an 1800 square foot house looked so much smaller than I was expecting.  It finally hit me they were counting the basement square footage, so the main part of the house was only about 900-1000 sq ft.  All of that is something else I need to keep in mind!

I'm roughly looking for at least 1500 sq ft, not counting the basement.  Though smaller would potentially be okay if there is a good layout and storage options.  Since my H and I don't have kids, I'd also rather have fewer bedrooms and more spaciousness for the same square footage.

My side of my current house is 1170 sq ft.  The living room is big, but skinny.  Our master bedroom is big.  But our bathroom is tiny and the kitchen is on the small side.  It also doesn't have much storage/cabinetry.  I'm only okay with a small bathroom again is if there are TWO!

That's wild you know what I am talking about with the stairs!  Or maybe it's not as unusual as I think, lol.  I just hadn't seen something like that before.

I've thought of the bolded a few times and then keep forgetting, lol.  I've never used one to find a rental, so it's not the first thing that comes to mind.  But it is a good idea.  Plus I need a realtor anyway when we first start house hunting, so it would be a nice way to see how well we work together.

There were tons of houses available when we were toodling around in November.  But it's interesting to see what a difference coming into spring makes.  Almost everything for sale is already pending.

I'll be looking right away when we move because you never know when the right opportunity will bite.  But I'm already seeing that fall or winter are better house hunting times.

  • I would expect, if Cincy is like Buffalo and Toledo, that spring/summer are going to be better for house hunting @short+sassy. I’d expect in late March/April listings to start going up. At least in our experience- your photos look better because the weather is a lot better and no one wants to try and move in the winter here (or Toledo) so people wait to list until spring. Then in the summer people want to move before the school year starts.

I meant better as in less competition from other buyers!  But that makes sense there might be fewer listings also.

Moving from our Cincy rental to a house should be somewhat easy, relatively speaking, because most of our belongings will be in a pod that stays in storage until we tell them where we want it delivered.  Wintertime would not be a fave but, as long as it isn't snowing/icy when we are trekking stuff into the house, probably not a big deal.  We could also be flexible with the days and work with the weather.

I feel like that used to definitely be the case, but (again in Buffalo at least) there’s been such limited inventory of houses that everything is still going really fast here!

  • @short+sassy DD's town in the Chicago area has the same parking set up. It shocked me the first time we drove there.

I know the Indy market is still pretty hot for sellers but that is because inventory is so low. It has slowed down though, from the pandemic madness that it was. Yes spring-summer is the busiest time for home sales here, and I always think of Cincy and Indy as being pretty comparable.

We had the same thing happen with our card while traveling last summer.  We are highly suspicious that the card reader at the gas pump had a card skimmer over it.  In addition to our gas charge, we had nearly $500 in 2 different charges at a Lowes near the gas station.  American Express was able to freeze our card and no other charges appeared.  They issued a new card in days and would have given us a temporary number over the phone if needed.
