Wedding Woes

Tuesday

Y'all.  I watched the Republican Convention yesterday/last night (I have watched them both since I can remember and can't help myself).  It's is effin' WILDING in that place.  First of all, someone was bleeped.  I was taking a note at the time and didn't catch what she said and I'm so curious to know.  AMBER ROSE spoke.  The newscasters were like, She's most famous for dating Kayne.  I was like, Ma'am...that is NOT what she is famous for, let's not play family values now.  It was so odd to see someone with a forehead tattoo on the RNC stage.  But the most awesome thing was that the president of the TEAMSTERS was up there!!!  He gave a 15 minute, fire and brimstone speech on why unions make the average American stronger and the most anti-corporation speech I think I've ever heard, right to that audience.  There were claps and shouts of support and a lot of confusion.  I was sitting in stunned silence, like WTF is happening, I couldn't even take notes.  I didn't watch all night, I'm too old for that.  When their nominee came in, it was gross, they made it seem like an old school Baptist church revival and I was sickened, just based on my history.  I have nothing to say re: the VP pick.

Otherwise, SSDD.  I was supposed to see Gremlins at the movies tonight, but I think I'm going ot have to cancel.  I have removed my right contact until the swelling in my eye goes down.  I can see okay to work, but i think a movie theatre experience might be too much to watch.  Is it Friday yet?  :D

Re: Tuesday

  • JD Vance is trash. That's all I've got about that.

Nothing much else going on. We're camping at the lake this weekend and I'm trying to get my ish together. It's going to be so hot, but whatever. I might just sleep on the paddleboard.

Melting over here, as I know everyone else is too.
My dryer started acting up yesterday, I had to bring a load of washed clothes to the nearby laundromat just to go through the dryer (there was a chance of showers or else I would’ve hung it on the close line. Thankfully the local appliance guy can come later today, hopefully it’s an easy fix.
  • It's insane to me that anybody would vote for someone who might go to jail.  You'd think that would at least give pause to swing voters and even most Republicans.

I know I shouldn't be borrowing trouble because we are still such a ways off.  But I'm worried they will get rid of the ACA if we have a Republican president and both houses are a Republican majority.

My life goal is to retire early, but I can't do that if I can't buy health insurance at a somewhat reasonable monthly premium or if I can't buy it at all because of my pre-existing conditions.  I already spent half of my 20s without any health insurance because I couldn't buy it and anything related to a pre-existing condition was excluded on my next plan for 12 months.

I remember begging insurance companies to let me buy major medical coverage.  Whatever, they can exclude my conditions but ffs, let me protect myself if I fall and break my leg or need my gallbladder removed.  But the answer was always no.  I couldn't buy any kind of medical insurance for any price.

It's a wake-up call.  Even if this doesn't happen in the next election cycle, there will always be this danger.  I can't necessarily plan for my early retirement to be in the US.  I also need a Plan B to retire to another country where I'm eligible for their health insurance or can buy private policies for a reasonable price.  Fortunately there are a LOT of places like that, but also a lot of "cons" to living in a foreign country.

We have friends who moved to Canada years ago because he saw how things were going in this country - and I mean years ago. I think they now have Canadian citizenship but I'm not sure. Anyway, they immediately were covered for healthcare because of his job. They have no plans to move back to the US. If we didn't have kids and grandkids here I would be figuring a way to do it. I was born in Italy because my Dad was stationed there with the US Navy. I could possibly look into Italian citizenship (which I had until I was 21 why oh why didn't I maintain it!?)
  • @short+sassy the ACA is a HUGE reason I will not vote for the current R ticket.   Combine that with their standing on social issues and the thoughts and prayers after every shooting and I'm not voting for Rs at the national level.

That would be sweet!  I wouldn't be surprised if you could still obtain it.  Generally speaking, the US is the one that doesn't allow dual citizenship and make people choose.  Though it usually doesn't make a difference, unless they want to become a military officer.  Italy might be fine with "here's my Italian birth certificate".

Funny enough, I used to work for a defense contractor and one of my coworkers handled those issues.  If someone with a dual citizenship requested becoming an officer, he would contact them and explain they were required to denounce their other citizenship.  If they wanted to do that, he would send them the paperwork.  If they didn't, they didn't get in trouble.  They weren't even kicked out of the military.  But they couldn't become an officer.

I might be able to get Germany citizenship which would then open up all the EU countries, though I haven't delved more into it yet.

Germany has a program where if your paternal father or grandfather was a German citizen, you can become one also.  I did side-eye why it is only paternal and not maternal, but not my monkeys.

My grandfather was born in Germany, but here is where it gets tricky.  It supposedly can't "skip" a generation.  So my father would have had to have applied and become a German citizen for me to become a citizen.  BUT my father passed away before the EU existed and possibly before this German policy was in place.  I'm hoping I can use that to be granted an exception to the "no skip" rule.

Malta and Portugal have two of the easiest immigrations for EU countries.  Though you do have to invest a certain level of money into either real estate or a business or a combination of both.  One is $250K and the other is $400K, though I forget which is which.  I think that also gives you a resident visa to work/live there.  And then you can apply for citizenship after a few years.

  • I should also add, I don't even have my heart set on a European country.

Some great choices in Central/South America.  People are sleeping on Uruguay.  Safe and affordable.  Incredible scenery with both mountains and beaches.

But oof.  It's way down there.  A very long flight to come back and visit the US or really go anywhere off the continent.

  • My husband is a duel citizen. He recently renewed his other passport just in case.

If shit really hits the fan, I might be a 90 day fiance.
  • Yup @short+sassy citizenship can definitely affect things like your clearance.  I know it was an issue for people DH worked with that they couldn't claim citizen ship of us AND another country due to the business they were in.  It's not that you can't get that citizenship but it's going to be an issue depending on what it is that you do.  If he ever wanted to pursue it in Italy it iwould be a problem with his job.
