It’s strangely breezy and…not hot…considering we have a brief heatwave coming our way Thurs- Sat, with highs around 90. Making the most of it now though with the windows and doors thrown open.

Yesterday the kids and I did the Harry Potter experience again- felt the urge to do it once more because it’s leaving NYC soon.  Then we went to the Central Park Zoo.  Took a cab up to the zoo and again back downtown to get our train home. The city goes in and out of feeling super safe and sadly it’s not in a “I feel safe riding the subway with three children” place right now.  It’ll improve, it always does, it’s just a cycle.  Cabs are a lot though 🤪

    SSDD otherwise

You are rocking that look @VarunaTT! And yay for the part time job.  I’d love that right now.

Did you know ambien shopping is a thing? Woke up at 3, took an ambien, scrolled my phone - SAW this device that massaged your head while using red light therapy AND inserting oil at the same time.  So I remember seeing the ad.  This morning I woke up and looked at my email.  Oh. Apparently I bought it?

  • Hello.  It's the first day of school for us.  I can't believe DefConn's in 8th grade.

Yes, I know it's early.  We have one of those balanced calendars where longer breaks are sprinkled throughout the school year. So that means a shorter summer.

Volunteering yesterday was OK.  The turnout was a lot lower than years past, which made it less fun than it normally is.

This morning has been a lot.  The kiddo's (supposed, purported, assumed?) baby was born late last week.  He texted DH very late last night about it, so I'm assuming he just found out.  I'm working on what he needs to do in order to start the process to rule him in or out on paternity.  She's indicated she will make it as difficult as possible.  Thankfully, I have friends who know way more about this and can help us navigate.

There's also a lot going on with the fallout from foster nephew going back with his mom.  Sis and BIL are taking off next week and I was able to secure them a couple nights for free on my points.  It's the least I can do.

My boss is forcing me to take the rest of the week off after today.   I don't have concrete plans tomorrow (except to do anything my sister needs me to, but she's not sure what that is at the moment), so I will post Prudie.  If I don't do it before 1 or so, then someone else (@short+sassy?) take up the mantle.  :)
  • @VarunaTT Your hair looks great!

@ei34 shhh, don't let the weather know you know it's nice out.

@mrsconn23 Hugs for Sis and BIL and foster nephew. I can't believe Defconn is in 8th grade now!

@CharmedPam lol. I'm pretty sure there are a ton of sit-com jokes about it. I remember on Grace and Frankie, Grace broke up with her BF but he was on Ambien and binging food at the fridge and he didn't remember any of it so she had to do it all over again another day.

I have had a stressful 24 hours. I'm trying to re-certify one of my licenses and it is the most unnecessarily long process ever. And then I thought it would save my application, it didn't, and I had to re-upload like 50 documents which made me want to tear my hair out this morning. It definitely feels like it should be Thursday because I didn't leave work until after 9 last night because I was working on this.  More work shenanigans are happening, nothing that's really unexpected, just more so stuff that makes me wonder, do they really think we'll stick around if they keep doing this? It's absolutely bonkers. And the one meeting I would like to be a part of to say something is on Monday, and I'll be somewhere for training. Boo.

Otherwise, just keeping an eye on the Olympics. I needs to make a quick binge list of stuff on Peacock while we have it for the month or two.

  • Love the hair @VarunaTT!!!

I was up too @Casadena but with the baby. He had been doing SO GOOD with sleeping and now… not.

  • I think things are finally catching up with me (or maybe it’s Ms new cold). My uncle passed on Monday night and it’s sad. He was really great and he was far too young (he has dementia but was only 72) and it just feels cruel.

J didn’t sleep well again last night so I didn’t sleep well. And on top of that I’m being recruited for a new role I have to decide if I want or not. How do you all make big career decisions??

I wasn’t mad at 3:00 self, like I want it and hopefully it helps my hair! But I also like to shop around and find coupons before buying it too.
I think I remember that ep of Grace & Frankie too.  I connected well.  I don’t think I ambien eat because… well, I keep my fridge pretty bare.

  • @charlotte989875, I just make impulsive decisions based on my mood at the time. It's gone ok so far.

It's so humid here today. I went into the office because I'm on an interview panel and even though it was remote, I like to give candidates the impression that I show up at least occasionally. But it was so muggy that I had to come home at lunch and change and put my hair up.

Nothing much else going on. There's a pizza place in the neighborhood that does $20 pizza and bottle of wine Wednesdays, so since I already have pants on and never feel like cooking, we'll probably do that.

I’m sorry for your loss @charlotte989875 , 72 is definitely too young
  • @ei34, sounds like such a fun day!  As someone who has never lived in NYC, I'd always hear the stereotypical subway complaints.  But the first time I experienced it, I was completely amazed!  It was so convenient and I never expected how far down in the ground it goes.  All this activity going on and big pieces of machinery running under one of the biggest cities in the world.

As compared to New Orleans where city buses only come by a stop every 30 minutes and sometimes they don't.  They also don't run 24 hours, which especially sucks for service workers in the French Quarter.  There's no free parking there and bars never close.

But I'm sure it's different for residents as opposed to tourists like myself.  I also can't speak to the safety aspect.  I always felt safe, but am only there for a week here and there.  And also not having to worry about 3 kids and their safety!

@VarunaTT, the new hair style looks great!

@mrsconn23, If you aren't able to, I'd be able to post Prudie during my lunch hour which would be around 11:30am (Central).  You're a great sister!  Also wishing your family luck with the "is/isn't it" the kiddo's baby.  I hope it isn't a long, drawn out process because I'm sure it's hard for him to not know.

@levioosa, I hope you have your re-certification done soon.  You already work such long and stressful hours.  You definitely don't need the aggravation of a wonky system forcing you to re-do things.

@charlotte989875, I'm sorry to hear about your uncle!

  • @CharmedPam I've had a handful of friends who have had bad experiences on ambien which is why I refuse to take it.  One friend was headed outside with car keys in hand when he tripped, hit his face breaking his nose, and that's what woke him up.  Another ordered pizza more than once and would just find it at the foot of her bed in the morning.  One friend drove to Braums I think and bought ice cream and milk and came home.  There was almost a marriage fight over that b/c he didn't remember doing his, his husband obviously hadn't, and everyone was confused.  Those are the ones I remember the most, but I'm pretty sure there was at least 2 more "I eat and don't remember doing it".

    @VarunaTT I like your hair.

Weird day for me. My boss arranged a phone conference with a client at the client's request but the client needed administrative, not tax-specific, help. Not a great use of my time.

Having lunch now, then back to work.

@charlotte989875 I'm very sorry for your loss.
  • I'm so sorry for your loss @charlotte989875

Wish I could be more help but I feel paralyzed myself by big career decisions (which I need to start being more aggressive with soon). I tend to think naturally in "pros and cons" and then weight each one according to how much I value it. Ex. Work longer hours, but no on call and good PTO, less pay but much better work life balance, etc.

Now I'm also putting a lot of weight on job security in the advent of AI. There are a lot of areas in healthcare which I would be much better suited to, however I can already see the writing on the wall for several jobs.

  • @ei34 we're debating that for next week and taking the kids to a Yankee game.  I think my youngest is slightly older than your group and my hope is that for the evening we'll be adults huddled around them and in the crowd of people.

If you think we're off our rocker and we should just spring for the Uber we can deal.  Chiquita became seasoned at the Subway in DC and witnessed guys getting high on....something not smelling skunky and 20 something horny guys who were drunk, stoned and in need of getting laid.  I'll have DH with me who is hardly the brute squad but is at least a grown ass man which I...hope is intimidating despite him being a lover not a fighter.

@banana468 I think my oldest and Chiquito are the same age! Also think you guys would be fine.  Im picturing a large group, traveling en masse from the MetroNorth to ..I guess the 4? A subway car packed with fans. You’d be fine, and that’s the best way to get up to Yankee stadium from GC any time of day…that cab ride would rival what you paid for tickets.

For the record I hate that I’m the local saying I don’t feel safe on the subway. It would’ve been fine. The city goes in and out of being average safe and quite safe. Now that I’m on Long Island and extra sensitive to admitting that. There are native Long Islanders who never go to the city/never take their kids/go on about how unsafe and dirty it is. And it really isn’t. I had to do a suburban mom check on myself. We had a couple sketchy run ins on the two block walk from the LIRR to Harry. And I can’t pull off my “don’t mess with me” vibe when I have three wide-eyed kids flocking me 😝 so the cabs were just following my gut. But really, it’s fine.

Yeah - I think we're actually likely not going from GC but plan to drive in, spend the night and get a hotel.    DH and I will have to look at the #s and the timing (may leave late Friday knowing that we'll be part of the shore traffic who I normally want to threaten with homicide) but yeah.  I think the hope is to park at the hotel, unload and then subway uptown on the 4 with the goal to be close to the line (ish) for minimal walking back.  The next day we are thinking of taking the kids to the 9/11 memorial.
  • @ei34, it's like that for New Orleans also.  People from nearby suburbs "pearl clutch" and brag about how they never go to that heathen NOLA.  Probably over happy hour cocktails at AppleBee's, lol.

Something else I've found surprising since moving here is there are a lot of people who have no interest in traveling.  At best, they've gone on a road trip to TX, MS, or the Gulf Coast area of FL.  One of my former tenants is originally from Houma, LA.  It's only about 90 minutes from NOLA.  Houma itself is a good-sized town, but it's deep in rural Cajun country.

He told me he knows lots of people who have never left the area.  Not even to NOLA because it's a scary, big city.  It barely makes the top 50 list for biggest cities in the US, lol.  But I get it, it's about perspective.
