Start trying to find a new ride.

Dear Prudence,

I am a college student who doesn’t have a car. Public transportation is really poor in my city’ we’re looking at 4x or more the time it takes to drive directly. I also have health issues that make public transportation especially difficult for me, and I can’t afford to ride an Uber. Typically, I take classes online, but last semester a friend promised to drive me if I joined the same class as them (otherwise I would’ve gone online). Unfortunately, they often flake, and I’m stuck on the bus. Their excuse varies but it’s rarely something they couldn’t have predicted before this agreement, and I’m starting to resent them for it and having trouble staying grateful (which I usually express through what money I can spare and homework assistance). What to do?

Re: Start trying to find a new ride.

  • Can you talk to your professor and advise that you're having transportation issues so you will do what you can to get to class but may miss it?

But in the meantime go to your Student Union.  See what they have for ride share options.  You may not be the only person who lives in your area so see where there may be resources for ways to carpool
  • It's one class for one term. I think you have to suck it up and deal with the bus or find the budget for uber when friend flakes, but you shouldn't trust them again in the future.

If you have a disability, reach out to the public transportation authority as well. There are often alternatives (van rides etc) for disabled people who have issues with normal mass transit services, but you're probably not going to get that lined up fast enough to make much of a difference for the current semester.
  • Talk to student services and see if there's any other ride shares available as a connection. They might even have a pool they they can connect you with.

  • My city also has a city transportation available for riders who are disabled.  It is direct from point A to B and free, though it has to be scheduled.  LW should really start pushing from some resources  Being in college will help, they should have an office there especially for students who are disabled.  My city transportation also sucks, so I feel for LW.  I tried to look into taking the bus and between the schedule and where I had to even walk to, to GET the bus was outrageous.

    My transportation system rant.

My local angst is the city of New Orleans is in its own parish (county) that's different from the surrounding suburbs.  The surrounding suburbs are in three different parishes, smh.  And NONE of the various parish transportation systems are coordinated with each other.

In the past, my H and I looked at getting to the airport (Jefferson Parish) via city bus.  Because hey!  $3 instead of $45 for a cab would be great.  It's 14 miles away and 20-30 minutes via car.

But we have never done it because bus route is insane.  You have to go to one of the few stops that's a transfer to the other parish.  No matter the time, it would just miss the bus that takes you into Jefferson Parish by 10 minutes.  So then you had to wait 45 minutes for the next one because they only come about once an hour.

It takes about 3.5 hours.  My plane flight is less than that most of the time!

Then I think about all the commuters who might have cars for no other reason than they work in the city.  Or people who have limited job prospects because they don't have a car.

The US massively screwed up a long time ago with a poor public transportation infrastructure in most places.  But not having a coordinated transportation system for a city and its suburbs is taking it another step further into absurdity.

I mean, a lot of places had great public transportation, and then the oil industry came in and purposefully dismantled it. The LA area used to have some great lines, all gone now, and they're trying to rebuild some and it's a thousand times harder now because of population growth. Hands down I would take the train more places if it was feasible to do so. I remember as a young adult (when I lived at home), my father and I had a huge fight where he tried to take my car. He told me I could just take the bus to school. Um, in my car it was a 15 minute drive on the freeway. By bus it would take 2.5-3 hours one way. I was working and going to school and taking nearly twice the full time of credits, it was not a realistic option to take the bus for four hours a day.

  • @levioosa, I've heard that also.  Politicians yet again selling out the American public for their big business buddies.

My friend (C) lives in Tustin and works in downtown LA.  She takes the train to work and loves it.

I flew into LAX once and took the train to southern OC.  Side-eyed the airport was nowhere near the train station.

C told me there were talks of putting in an elevated rail to link the airport to the train station, especially with the Olympics coming (this was 5ish years ago).  Me: "C!  Have you met our people, lol?  They will be rioting in the streets if there is even a hint of an elevated rail going into their neighborhood or business corridor."

But definitely would have been a great idea 50 years ago.

They are building that train from LA area to Vegas and I am absolutely stoked about it. It's absolutely needed too because the two lane highway for most of that 3 hour stretch is not going to cut it much longer.

That would be AWESOME!!!  I used to do 2-3 road trips a year to Vegas when I still lived in CA.

The casinos should donate money to that project.  You know they will get their contributions back many times over!

@short+sassy, it would be easier to fly at that point, but feasibly soon you can even take the train from SD to Vegas
