Wedding Woes

Be true to yourself even if it loses you a 'friend'.

Dear Prudence,

My best friend is refusing to talk to me because I acted friendly with someone in a clique he dislikes. I am always friendly with everyone. But my friend is demanding that I act hostile toward every member of that clique because he hates one of them for calling him an a**hole on social media; and it’s not even the same person I was friendly with. I fundamentally do not want to be hostile to anybody, and I consider it unfair that my friend is giving me the ultimatum of either betraying my own morals or losing the friendship of someone I care about. Should I hold strong and sever my friendship with my best friend to uphold my morals?

  • That's really only a question the OP can answer for themselves.

This is what I would do.  If the clique are casual acquaintances and I wouldn't miss their presence in my life, I would go with a middle ground and stop seeing/interacting with them.  But if I ran into one of them on the street, I'd still be friendly and polite.

If it is not possible to avoid the clique, I'd tell my friend it isn't in my nature to be hostile to people and I am not doing that.  I'd add that I'm on their side and value our friendship.  But if they want to end our friendship because I won't be a jerk to other people, then that is what they need to do.

  • This is so silly (and agree @levioosa, immature).  If I were the OP I wouldn't change a part of my personality that comes naturally to me at the request of a friend.
  • I don't care if there's a .0001% chance of ever meeting anyone in the clique ever again, I would not kowtow to this request. A person who issues this kind of ultimatum is not a friend.

But yeah, this is def high school or younger. You're going to see the other people.
