I think I’m back on track at work.  Yay.  Anyway our vacation “up North” was just great. Mackinac Island for those wondering what up north is to me lol. I love air bnb when it involves a nice split.  However, the damn pillowcases they had on the pillows smelled so gross.  Usually I bring my own pillow, especially when driving and not flying but I forgot it. I had to stop off at Walmart to get some replacements.  Ugh! $330/night and they can’t afford good detergent? Or new pillows?

I got an email that les miserables comes to Chicago in Dec/Jan BUT I already saw that one (albeit obstructed view seats) and I literally just bought & Juliet tickets last week which I haven’t seen yet.  So someone tell me no! And oh look - Moulin Rouge comes in April of next year too.  No! No! No!

Re: Wednesday

  • I've seen Les Mis at least 4 or 5 times.  I think I'm good on that show, so I'd pass on buying tickets. LOL  Wicked, OTOH, is my absolute fave and I will buy tix every time it comes to town.  You just reminded me to look at our Broadway season schedule.  Thankfully, it doesn't start until December and I'm finally seeing Six in March. Yay

Yay for a fun trip.  Eww to gross smelling pillows.  Especially at $300+/night.
  • I love Wicked! My fave before Hamilton came on the scene.  Actually Six probably before Hamilton now. And of course, phantom of the opera. I can’t even remember much of Les Mis tbh. I bet you’re excited for the movie @mrsconn23? They just said it’s a 2 parter

  • See, that's another reason I don't like AirBnb. We stayed in one and I actually ended up sleeping on top of the sheets without a blanket because everything smelled dank. No thank you. At least I know most hotels have minimum standards. I was looking to see what Airbnb options I had in my Grandparent's town for Christmas because I reallllly don't feel like driving back 2 hours on Christmas night and the house is going to be full of guests who are truly from out of town so there's no room for us. And there are way too many bears in their backyard consistently for me to be cool with pitching a literal tent back there. lol. But yesterday I saw one singular AirBnb in their area, walking distance from their house, but it was a 120 sq foot detached room with a full size bed, and the bathroom was OUTDOOR across the courtyard from the mini house? Hut? Whatever you want to call it. I was like oh no, there is no way in hell I'm walking there from my grandparents after a night of drinks and games and paying $200 a night to have to put on a long coat and trek across a yard for the 9 million times a night I have to pee. They tried to market it as "glamping!" Uh huh.

Anyways, it's SSDD for me. Trying to decide on a walk vs hike tonight. It is getting cold gradually which is awesome, except my body is used to 100 degrees and I'm literally freezing at 70. It's also that time of year where it's cold (for us) in the morning, but hot in the afternoon and it does make it hard to plan an outfit. But I'm not complaining. I'm ecstatic that hopefully this next week is our last hot push before the fall.

  • $200/night to glamp??  No thanks.

I'm camping this weekend but it's for a good cause.

I've only used one Air BNB and it was 8 years ago.  At this point I'm so skeptical of them.  In 2020 we considered going w/ an AirBnB for vacation but opted instead to use a real estate agency to rent a house for a week in Maine.  I'd do that again when I have a fall back and still we have our own space and there's a way to mitigate problems.

The older I get the pickier I am. Even camping it didn't take me long to know my comfort level and I need at least a cot or I don't sleep.

Another busy day. Back to school night for Chiquito and Chiquita has a soccer practice followed by 'support' for the Varsity team which means 2 hours of bench warming.  If you'll excuse me I need to hound her to do her HW.
  • I love Les Miserables, but "no." I've seen it live once and recorded productions of it multiple times.

No luck finding a permanent new job, but I may be able to revive my own business in the not too distant future with part of an inheritance, so not too bad.

One of the major tax deadlines has passed, so I'm taking a couple of days to recuperate and then back to work.
  • I've used AirBnB/VrBo several times for my college girls' trips and for when DS1 got married. We've really never had a problem. Most of the time the properties were rental properties not the owner's actual homes. The one exception was the place we rented for DS1's wedding. The description said there was a cat on the premises (no problem I thought, I love animals) and that it would stay away and to itself. It was the friendliest cat I have ever met! It wanted to snuggle all the time. Unfortunately, I discovered I'm allergic to cats! By the end of the weekend I was all sneezy and my eyes were watery and itchy. I'm sure it was because I was sleeping in a bed that the cat normally was all over (it didn't try to sleep with us though). Other than that the house was nice. The owner had warned that a cat was there - I just didn't realize it would be a problem for me.
  • We do AirBnB/VRBO when we visit my sister.  It's nice to not have to get 3 hotel rooms and it's more comfortable.  It's tough to find a place that is somewhat handicap accessible and the one we've found isn't ideal for that but we make it work.

We had an employee appreciation event on-site yesterday so I went to the office to work.  It was very nice and well-organized.  There are about 20,000 employees at our site and so it was crowded.  There were photo booths, food, games and flu/covid vaccines.  I got both shots as it was convenient.  A local rescue brought puppies and puppy cuddles were just what the dr. ordered!  I spent about an hour out there before I had to return to an office to teach in the afternoon.

My co-worker and I have a weird thing happen when we go on-site.  We each facilitate a monthly educational forum that has about 600 folks who attend virtually.  When we're on campus lots of folks will come up and say Hi.  They recognize us but we don't know them.  We're like local celebrities lol.

  • Overall, I love AirBnbs/vacation rentals.  They're usually cheaper and a lot more comfortable than a hotel room.

@ILoveBeachMusic, I totally understand why it turned out to be unpleasant with a cat, since you didn't realize you had allergies that severe.  But I love it when there are animals on site.  When my H and I went to Ocala, FL, we AirBnB'd a studio apartment on a horse ranch.  It also had a resident dog, though it didn't stay in the studio.

For our cruise last September, we even stayed IN a room in someone's home for the first time.  We were definitely unsure about that experience, but it turned out great.  That guy had a dog that was fully disclosed in the listing.  The dog was also a highlight of most people's reviews, lol.

My only bad AirBnb experience was in Boston.  Ironically, that was our first time using Airbnb or any other vacation rental.  It was born out of necessity.  Hotel rates are crazy in Boston, like starting at $400/night to be anywhere near the downtown which is also where most of the historic sites are located.  We were going to completely scratch the trip, but then checked out Airbnb.

The first place we booked, the hostess suddenly canceled on us with less than two weeks notice before our trip.  AirBnb gave us up to 10% more to cover another booking.  We scrambled to find another place that wasn't an abject fortune since there wasn't much available anymore.  We ended up booking in a suburb called Revere.  $100/night.  I was very nervous about how close or convenient it would be to the city.  That part turned out to be AMAZING!  There was a subway stop a block away and it was only 20 minutes to the downtown.

But the accommodations themselves were very lacking.  It was a basement unit and there was a GIANT water pipe for the whole house, like 2-3' in circumference, that went right past the bed.  There were people renting the main house and every time they showered or flushed the toilet, it was a "whoosh" water sound from that pipe. No television, even though the listing said there was one.  Instead of having a normal mattress, it was a thick piece of foam on a box spring.

However, that location (chef's kiss)!  Not just that it was convenient to the downtown.  Safe neighborhood with gorgeous architecture.  A 5-minute walk to the beach, where there was a Dunkin's Doughnuts.  Or we could walk 3 minutes in the opposite direction for a different DD, lmao.  Both a small grocery store and a place with delicious sandwiches was a block away.  I tried giardiniera for the first time because it was on the sandwich I ordered.

A couple other notes about the trip.

--Revere Beach's claim to fame is it is the first place in the US where a woman wore a bathing suit.  The woman was an avid swimmer and had designed it herself.  I believe she later opened a business to sell them.

--On our first morning when we got off at one of the downtown subway stops, I noticed a historical plaque and went over to look at it.  Across the street had been the site of the Boston Massacre.  Wow, I'd been in Boston proper for two minutes and already ran across one of the most famous events in US history!
