Monday

How was everyone's weekend?

Re: Monday

  • Mine was nice.  Friday evening wrapped up the final back to school event one of my kids had (thankfully). Saturday was busy but not in an overwhelming way - a brunch with some aunts and uncles (my mom's siblings) that I just don't see as often as I used to, then household chores and the kids and I saw The Wild Robot (my son's favorite book, though my daughters and I enjoyed it too)...it was really well done, a rare case of the movie being as good as the book, I cried at least six times lol, but good.

Yesterday was just mass, more cleaning, and some cooking and baking (if anyone is on the fence about getting the Trader Joe's cinnamon roll Blondie bar mix, I'm here to give it two thumbs up ;) .  My parents left for a long (for them) vacation last night, and I heard from them a couple hours ago that they arrived safely in Greece (jealous but obviously happy that they're there).
    Hope everyone's Monday goes smoothly!
  • Week 2 of the new job and thinking there’s no real way it can be any worse than week 1. Weekend was good, but exhausting. H went to camp to fix a roof, his sister and I took all the kids to a fall fest, they had a blast but I was exhausted which is probably as it should be!
  • Wow @mrsconn23 sending lots of good vibes for you, that's a lot on your plate right now!

@ei34 glad it was a nice weekend!

@charlotte989875 hoping the job starts getting better and you have the opportunity to lead the team in the right direction.
  • @charlotte989875 good luck!!  I hope it improves.  @mrsconn23 that's a lot on your plate too! Continued vibes for job placement and your H's mental health!  Hope DefConn gets better soon!  The flu is no joke - you're reminding me that I need to call for vaccines!

Weekend was busy ish.  Saturday Chiquito had a soccer game in the morning and they tied.  Chiquita had a game an hour later and forgot shin guards so cut to mew racing to the field with Chiquto's sweaty ones so she could play.  SHe wond up as keeper the 2nd half due to a likely concussion for our current one and luckily our defense is solid so no errors on her end!

I raced home from her game, quickly changed and headed to church to cover as cantor for the two evening masses and then we took the kids out to dinner.  Sunday Chiquito and DH were at a booth selling the Cub Scout million dollar popcorn (I mean, it's like $20 / bag ) and I set out to do Sunday cleaning.  The kids now have clean sheets on their beds and I tested the washing machine with all the dirty laundry.

Random plug.  The bathroom in our house molds fast.  It's gross and it just does and the only option is to not shower and...that's not an option with two stink factories that I grew myself.   This stuff is IT.  Yes I used nearly the entire thing but it WORKS and my tile grout and caulk are white and I didn't have to break into a sweat and swear to make it happen:

Wear gloves and vent your bathroom if you use it.
  • Weekend was fine, H took G to his cancer wellness center for a kids lego building event and then to the annual Glow walk for cancer fundraiser Saturday night. G had a blast and H's parents, Sister/BIL/niblings went as well. N and stayed home and hung out. Yesterday I took G for a few hours to hang out and run some errands together, H's parents stopped by for a bit to see the boys and bring ice cream and popsicles. My mom came around dinner time and is staying for a few days to hang with N before he goes back to school!

Our weekend was good.  Saturday I finished a Cricut project for my friend who had to put down their dog of 15 yrs.  Then we went for a drive to see some goats owned by a friend.  She also has an 8 week old boxer/lab mix - so cute.  Then we drove to pick up a second Cricut machine from a seller on FB MarketPlace.  Came home and did a craft store run.

Sunday we skipped church.  I put chili in the crockpot and made cornbread muffins.  Our nephew came over for the Packer/Vikings game.  Oh boy, the first half was brutal!  The Pack came back in the second half but not quite enough.

Sunday morning I had arranged to pick up another Cricut machine in town (both of these were such good prices, I couldn't pass up) for a friend.  The seller and I made plans for pick up and she confirmed the time/address that morning.  I go and no one answers the door.  I text, no response.  It was a duplex, so I knocked on the side door too.  Nothing.  I finally sent another text that said I was waiting 5 more mins but would then leave.  Crickets. I left and she responded 10 mins later asking if her husband came out.  I said no.  Apparently, she was at work and he was supposed to handle.  I wasn't interested any more after seeing the condition of the house.  It may have been better inside but the outside was disgusting with garbage piled out in and around a trash can, junk everywhere.  ICK.

So, I will give my friend the machine I bought on Saturday and keep looking for a second one for myself.

  • We arrived home from Chicago Friday afternoon. Around 5:30 our power went out and didn't come back on until Sunday morning. We have a lift pump for our waste water so when we are without electricity we have to limit water usage or the waste will back up into the basement bathroom (luckily it has never happened). Anyway, I went and worked out at the Y and showered over there on Saturday, as did H. I got 2 books read because what else is there to do? Thankfully iPads are backlit.

I feel horrible for all the devastation in western NC and eastern TN. I think y'all know I'm originally from NC. Everyone I know is ok so far. One of my friends from college was still trying to reach her sister yesterday. Another college friend's son lives in Asheville and has no access to water. He is in his early 20s and asked her to see if she could find out where he could walk to to get free water (he has no internet/tv). The stores are only accepting cash because there is no internet. The apartment complex where he lives is using pool water to flush the toilets. I saw somewhere that they are using pack mules to try to get supplies to people. It is going to get worse before it gets better I'm afraid. Some of my friends in central NC are trying to organize donations for the area. This area just never expects to get hit by a hurricane - they are 500 miles from the coast!
  • @ILoveBeachMusic, I'm glad everyone you know in NC is okay.  I hope Asheville and FL and anyone else who needs help, gets it soon.

Part of my hurricane season preparation is keeping extra cash in my safe.  Or with me, if we are evacuating.  I've had it happen a number of times where stores are open, but they can only take cash because the electricity or cable/internet to use their credit card machines is down.

Another tip is to fill the bathtub with water ahead of time.  It's an easy way to get at least 40 gallons of water jic, in the event of an emergency.  It is stagnant water though, so it's not going to be safe to drink forever.  But I'm comfortable with a few days, as long as it stays clear.

We have tried to follow the same.  We had no power for 5 days when Sandy hit 12 years ago and luckily gas pumps accepted credit cards most of the time but it would stink if they didn't and we needed fuel for the generator.     And having a well pump when the power goes out there's no water so we either fill the tub or a tote and then we can at least flush toilets while we're in between generator supply.

We also maintain a small supply of the fuel needed to have generator power so we can easily morph.  It's less an issue now but in the winter it's ROUGH if we didn't have power and the longer we go w/o heat in the cold the greater the likelihood of pipes freezing.    Things to think about as you move further north!
  • Shoot.  I NEVER carry cash with me.  I’d be SOL.

We don't (usually) have extreme weather, but we do have the ever looming threat of earthquakes. We have a generator and now we have solar with a back up battery. H keeps gallons of water in all of the bedrooms and den in case we ever have a catastrophic quake and get stranded and there's some limited food too. We also have a giant water container in the back yard that is full of emergency water just in case. Except for the fact that I'm positive our area will be a dystopian Purge-like nightmare in the event of a bad event, our house is probably The Place to Be if anything happens. Lord knows we wouldn't want to go to SIL's with her exactly 7 food bars in the cabinet per week with no extra food, water, or supplies. lol.

When did we become inlaws? 😂

  • One of my friends who has a house in the NC mountains does have a generator said they usually have "blizzard" food but it isn't blizzard season so people weren't prepared in that way. No one was prepared for hurricane weather in the mountains. We usually have bottled water in our fridge but don't have a generator. H is looking into getting a small one not a whole house one - too expensive he says.

Ours will power the boiler, hot water, well pump, fridge, freezer, and microwave and maybe a few outlets.   We can't run it at night (need to have the garage open to vent it and I'm not comfortable sleeping with open doors due to the human and animal element) but it's kept us clean, warm enough and without spoiled food.

Your H is right!  The whole house ones are $$$.  I think they start at $15K.

My H and I bought our generator at Costco of all places!  They don't carry them year round, but they do at this time of year.  Though I assume that is regional.  It was $900 a few years ago, though I think you can get them a bit cheaper.  It can run on natural gas, regular gas, or propane.  We hooked it up to our natural gas line, which unfortunately was another $800 to have a licensed plumber do that.

At least for our circumstances, when we need a generator, it's because a major storm has hit and no/few gas stations are open.  So we didn't want something that only ran on regular gas.

It's pretty powerful!  It can run our entire house no problem, plus an a/c and the refrigerator on our tenant's side.  We could even run our dishwasher or washer/dryer, if we briefly unplugged the refrigerator and our stand up freezer.

Hindsight being 20/20, I wish I hadn't spent the money.  But that is only because we didn't know how soon we'd be moving when we bought it.  We did just use it a couple weeks ago for Hurricane Francine.

Very smart.  Post-Sandy you couldn't get gas for a few weeks, people filling their cars would wait hours in line at gas stations only for the gas to run out.

Ours is also from Costco.  I don't remember how much it cost or the power capacity but if you have a well pump you need a generator with more power than the smaller ones can provide to ensure that you have water available.   That's the difference between being able to flush or not flush, shower wash hands, etc.
