I'm so right that I'm never wrong.

Dear Prudence,

I am a highly intelligent person. I don’t say that with false confidence, I know I’m smart, I ace every test that’s given to me, I take in information like a sponge, and I speak multiple languages. Now I do like to brag a little because it’s the only thing I pride myself on. I’m not athletic, I’m not very good at the video games I play, and I can’t draw for shit. I have pretty bad imposter syndrome, but it’s never been able to touch the fact I am smart.

Unfortunately, this becomes a problem. If you ask me a question, 95% of the time I will be right. I can admit when I’m wrong, but unless proven otherwise, I’ll assume I’m right. People seem to not entirely like this. Even other people like me, who are pretty smart, tend to not like it. I don’t rub it in their faces. Of course, I like being right, and I do make an effort to hear others’ voices and opinions, but odds are, I am right. The way I see it, people think I can’t admit I’m wrong. But I can, I’m just not usually wrong, and so it makes it seem like I can’t admit that I am. Should I be guilty of being right? I don’t care particularly if people like me, but I don’t want to hurt feelings, and I’m not sure how to avoid that.

—The Wrong Answer

Re: I'm so right that I'm never wrong.

  • You must have a lot of friends and be thrilling at parties.   How's that going for you?
  • How many conversations are you having though where there’s a black and white “right” answer?  Unless your social life is one big trivia night, there’s (supposed to be) a lot of nuance, personal life experience and opinion, as many topics of convo tend to be more subjective topics.

“Anyone doing anything for Halloween?! This is a fun time of year!” “Thanksgiving is the best holiday and I’m right bc I’m always right” is how it’s going in my head 🤭
  • I feel like this person likes to turn what starts as an innocuous conversation into a 'debate'.  They're probably a prolific keyboard warrior.
  • @levioosa, my knowledge for random trivia (especially 6 degrees of celebrity) is legend in my family.  I will never forget the time I pulled Wynton Marsalis out of ass in Trivial Pursuit and BIL looked at me like I had three heads.

Do I remember to get everything at the store even when it's on the damn list?  No.   But I will give you the family tree of a random actress while watching a rerun of a show though.  LOL
  • I've also been having a conversation like this with Chiquita.  It isn't that she's right all the time but she needs to learn that she doesn't need to have a retort or answer for everything.

Oh, but 13 year olds just know it ALL.  God mom, why can't you just let her live? ;)

OMG!  Right now we're in the zone of a teammate telling her that she's doing it all wrong on the soccer field.  I hear enough about what the teammate goes through and it's likely a classic case of speaking out against DD because she has so little control anywhere else due to her parents.    The teammate is entirely wrong but also has her own set of issues that there's no point responding.  Chiquita needs to learn that you don't to have the last word to handle this with grace and not EVERYTHING needs a come back.

Even just the way you correct someone! Like the 4yo was telling the 2yo this morning that there were two types of pears, red and green, and the 9yo jumped in with NO YOU'RE WRONG YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT

So we had to be like, "It can be a positive learning experience! You can say, 'Actually bro, did you know there are gold pears and other cool types too?'" The tone doesn't have to be "Hey, you're an idiot."

Lots of "Are you helping anyone with this correction or the way you're correcting them?" for us with her lately.
