Wedding Woes

Help! Makeup artist payment after mess up

Hired a makeup artist to do bridal and 7 bridesmaids hair and makeup. In fact I had hired someone else and then the first one informed me that she had already been hired so I figured oh my wedding planners or someone chose her so I said oh ok I like the work let's go with it so I cancelled the other HMU.

I was very adamant about getting done before 4, first look was 4 and guests arrived at 4:45. I said I would even prefer sooner since photographer arrives at 1:30 and that gives us plenty leeway to take getting ready photos.

They insisted noon was enough time despite my protests, I even suggest I go to the salon separately to do mine so they can focus on BM because they stated they couldn't get there any earlier than 12 anyway. Insisted photos after the first look at 4 so I will be fine. Etc etc.

My makeup was done at 4:45. We had to kick out guests so we can do first look so it was super stressful. Only 5 bridesmaids got hair down and only 2 got full makeup, one for half makeup and the rest had to scramble to do their own at like 4:30 pm. The BM missed cocktail hour and we had to delay the ceremony start, so we missed photos with the bridesmaids etc.

I'm good at keeping my cool externally but internally I was SCREAMING. Very stressed. First look stressful as well. Anyway, I had an amazing wedding so totally overshadowed the HMU.

The next day they sent me a bill for nearly $3k. Included second makeup artist fee (so they each charged a makeup fee for the same face of makeup 🙄), fees were increased from their original pricing, late booking fees (despite them being the ones to tell me they were already booked), special effects makeup fees, retouching fees, etc. also charged for 9 total makeup? I'm not sure how they were justifying that but anyway, rest assured I did not sign a contract with them ahead of time nor have a paid them any money. It's a weird scenario I know but we never discussed a second artist, late fees, increased fees from her original quotes, no proof of retouching, no justification for the double charges. Nothing was discussed. Obviously they knew I had a backup makeup person so why would I agree to last minute booking fees with them had I known?

Also kept blaming my wedding planner for telling them to get there at noon when they never spoke to her, only me, and they both insisted over and over noon was fine.

I suspect they saw how much bigger the wedding is than they expected and they thought they could just invoice me for whatever and hope I'd pay.

So ignoring the fact that they were the biggest stressor of the day and the majority of the hair/makeup was not even done, I'm not sure what to do. Obviously without a contract or any payment they don't have any recourse. I'm not looking to stiff them either, although I suspect many people would after being forced to miss an important photo shoot and hours with the vendors. But they certainly aren't getting $3k either. What do you think is fair?

  • I think this is really location specific.

But I think you'd need to look at what they're specifically charging and then what you received.

If they charged you for people who did not receive the service then do the math.  subtract the total for each person.  Also subtract the added fees that don't hold water.  And let them know that you appreciate the invoice but you are questioning it as you did not sign or agree to this so you are disputing the invoice lines.

Beyond that , I think you need to have the frank discussion that they're adding fees when they were late.  But also talk to the wedding planner before you do so to confirm that there was only communication from you and they can't point to anyone else giving them information or license to change the process.
  • Thank you, it’s in Tampa Florida area. I broke down costs myself to come to $1200 and that’s even with all the retouch fees, travel fees, and the little extras they threw in there that weren’t accounted for.

My bridesmaids had half Halloween faces spray painted by another artist there. The makeup artists are telling me that they had to touch up that skull paint (they added a line) so charged $110 for that, then charged an additional $100 to do the other half of the makeup, and then $100 for hair (quote said $60). So I’m already annoyed at the amount they charged without my prior approval (I expected $100 for a half makeup face, since I was paying the other airbrush artist already to do the half skull face).  They knew all this ahead of time btw I’m fact I asked them just to do hair and they were the ones that said they wanted to do the other half makeup face because they can make it blend well with the skull.

Bottom line though is this, they had only three out of 8 people….including me…. ready by 5pm, which is well over an hour late and we missed all the photo opportunities. They also has to rush through the other BM they actually did finish, and left out all the soecial effects details and face gems etc etc. And no one had any time to go back to them to get it touched up and it didn’t even matter anyway because we completely missed all the photos anyway! Not sure why they stayed and just hung out for the rest of the evening “for touchups”, I never asked them to and everyone else did their own makeup so no touch-ups were required.  So that $1,100 I am counting for even took into account the time they hung around for touch ups just because I am trying to be reasonable.
  • In lieu of an actual contract, you're in murky territory and a lot is going to depend on Florida law to get you through.  Services not rendered vs. services half ***ed rendered.  If you did not request they stick around and they did because they could and they didn't render services during that time of simply hanging out (as opposed to finishing what they didn't get done)...  Go back into your written communications/emails and bring the dispute items to the forefront.  End of the day, they didn't deliver all of the services you requested, and at minimum you should not be charged for not only services you did not request but services they did not attempt to complete.  And as Banana said - confirm that you are the only person to have communicated with the MUA with your planner and go from there.

For future brides - THIS is why you get it all in writing and have contracts because it protects both of you especially when something goes far less than planned!

Sorry for the conflict with your vendor!  Ick.

Would love to see pictures of your wedding party - the make-up/theme sound very unique!
