Manic Monday

Unless anyone has a better adjective to convey fully stressed out about tomorrow.  Ugh.  Sending vibes to all these next couple days.

@charlotte989875 how'd it go yesterday??

Re: Manic Monday

  • Silly, low stakes question, but does anyone play a game or do an activity with their family on Thanksgiving?  My siblings and I want to add some fun to the holiday now that it's just our immediate family without all the aunts, uncles and cousins we grew up sharing the holiday with.  Our parents prefer the downsize to 16 from what used to be closer to 30 guests, and we're happy if they are, and we're all good cooks so the meal itself is incredible.  But...we're all kind of tempted to add...something?  I guess some fun?  We already share what we're thankful for (and we're not playing football lol).  If all else fails we might bring along Uno, what do you meme, etc.  But we all agreed to crowd source to get ideas too.

My weekend was nice.  Lovely crisp weather and delicious meals both days.
  • I have to ask my brother but his partner's family plays a game for spare change that was addicting.  We played Easter but I can't remember the name.  Uno is also a fun one and there are tons of new Uno types.

We are having a picturesque fall that is super dry.   As a result, the brush fire hazard is through the roof and there have been several throughout the town.  The local state park has been closed since Saturday due to the fire that is ongoing, there was one off the highway exit in town 10 days ago, a local nature preserve last week and about a mile from my house last night.  The last one I could smell as I walked outside.  With a mostly volunteer fire department I am going to try to coordinate a donation drive to the guys who are leaving their families for this and burning the candle at both ends.

Plus - that takes my mind off tomorrow temporarily.

Our weekend was packed.  Chiquito was in a soccer tournament Saturday so we were out the door early, he played two games (won 1, lost 1), got his hair cut and we had family photos.  Four weeks ago we ordered a mattress and turned down delivery Saturday because we knew the day would be busy.  Of course as we pulled into the driveway the delivery truck with the mattress was there so I took delivery as DH and Chiquito were off to get his hair cut.  And Friday we had people over who cleaned the bathroom ceiling of surface mold so the contents of the upstairs bathroom are scattered around the house and upstairs.   It made for a cozy delivery as they wedged the bed against my closet door and I had Chiquita hold it up so I could do things like get in to get DH's shirt I was ironing for photos.  We were supposed to have them in the park that was closed so we moved to a different location and I can't wait to see them.  Chiquito had a birthday party Saturday night and after dinner we got the new mattress on the bed frame and bed made.  We were BEAT .

Sunday I was super grateful for the extra hour of sleep.   I was the sub cantor for the 9 AM and 11 AM Masses while Chiquito had his last game. He was a space cadet and left his water bottle and coat on the field.  Coach grabbed the bottle and instead of trying to do some house work, I was off to the field (a half hour away!) while DH was leading a Cub Scout pack hike.   I got it!  Spent the rest of the day trying to get the house just cleaner and now it looks.  The same.  It looks the same.

    Back to the grind!

  • @ei34 we always loved games like Scattergories that can have pretty unlimited number of players and you can make it up easily even if you don't have the actual cards/game set. We also love the "name game" - everyone throws in a few names of people that are widely known (family members, celebrities, etc, etc) and you pick out of a hat then give clues to guess the person.
  • Weekend was pretty good. G had an epic meltdown Saturday morning i think because he was nervous about swim lessons. But then did GREAT at swim lessons. Ran some errands then all went out for ice cream. Yesterday all the IL's came over for brunch and it was very nice. Our kids have been absolute animals lately so we had a few hard moments with them, but other than that was a great day. They were asleep by 7:30 so H and I had a nice night and then got "interrupted" when we took things upstairs. That was a bummer. Everyone was in a good mood and got ready nicely this morning though so hoping for a good day all around!
  • @ei34 at Thanksgiving we always play Dictionary. (I am the "dictionary" par excellence.)

Basically the host/'dictionary" throws out a word from the dictionary that everyone agrees they don't know, and then people write down "definitions" for it. Host collects them all, includes the actual definition, and shuffles them, then reads them aloud. People have to guess who wrote what.

We usually go about 6-8 rounds and the person with the highest total of correct guesses wins. If you have funny people, it's hilarious. And at this point we have callbacks to previous games that go back a decade or more - they'll just show up in a definition.
  • It’s fall and beautiful here too.  Those fires sound scary though @banana468.  Thankfully we had/have rain the last few days.
it gets dark out so early. I had a loooong drive home in it last night. Also, the time change makes the day already seem longer.
@VarunaTT, I went and bought those kiss gel nails you were talking about.  I took my false nails off and they all broke down to the nub and I HATE that feeling. I went to Walmart real quick but the selection sucked. I have coffin shape (which I don’t like) and miss matched (which I also don’t like), but I ordered a bunch of oval shapes shorts online that were shipped today so it should do until those arrive. I got a bunch on sale so I can put my color street wraps on them and have them how I like them.

Yeah, I've been ordering online for the same reason.  My favorites are the short lengths as well, really in any shape.  I bought one medium length to try and was useless.  Their online prices are really the way to go, IMHO.

My anxiety is baaaaaaad.  I'm doing the best I can to deal with it.  I bought this book nook:

and so far I'm loving building it.  I just started part 2/4, but put it down last night because I was tired but wanted to keep playing with it.

Otherwise, weekend was alright.  I got my big window covered with the insulating plastic for the winter.  Seems like it was just in time.  But I went a little crazy with winter cleaning, which is what I do instead of spring cleaning.  My back was hurting very badly yesterday, but the stiffness has dissipated a lot.  The F1 races were just out of control and shocking.  Rain was involved and it made for some incredible racing.  It does look like Verstappen is still going to win the world championship, but it's not a walk away like it was last year.  It's been an incredible season.

This is balderdash! We used to play it, but my family lacks creativity. After about 3 rounds, every round included "the film on the top of the water after boiling hot dogs" at least once.

@ei34 there are some great tabletop games out there that are loads of fun too.  My favorite cooperative game is probably Pandemic and it's easy to pick up the instructions and learn.  Disney's Villainous is not cooperative, but it's a load of fun and pretty easy for beginners to tabletop games.  Don't read the instructions, watch the video for learning.  There's also Forbidden Island, which was pretty easy to pick up as well.  If you want competitive, Boss Monster is pretty easy and fun, and anything based off of Settlers of Catan type gameplay is great (I know there's a train one at least, but there are loads of others).  Most tabletop can be pushed to about 8-10 people depending on add-ins.  One of my very favorite is a simple game called Gloom, where you basically make up stories about monster families.  I've laughed so hard in that game, I've cried.  I think it goes up to 6 players in the base game and you can add more families, so more players.

When we had more players than could be used in one game, we usually had a few games going, would switch, or set up a tournament.

K's family plays Nertz, which I'm not sure has a limit on players, you just keep adding cards:  https://bicyclecards.com/how-to-play/nerts

ETA: the easiest way to learn a tabletop game is to watch a video.  I really like "Watch it Played" b/c it's a dad and his kid playing games together and Will Wheaton's channel is awesome too.

ETA 2: And boardgamegeeks.com will often have great tips/hints and cheat sheets for boardgames to help the play go easier.

thanks so much for reminding me! I put this up in ‘22 but not ‘23 and I noticed higher gas bills.  I have my roll coming on Thursday lol.
    What a cute book nook!

  • Growing up, we played lot's of Nertz.  We have a smaller group but usually end up playing Chicken Foot dominoes.  We have also played Relative Insanity https://www.amazon.com/Relative-Insanity-Party-About-Relatives/dp/B079997BXY/ref=asc_df_B079997BXY/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693071376199&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17038726799636424922&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9195025&hvtargid=pla-568047636180&mcid=6cdce2d05b023a419665ebaf81f8c88b&th=1.  Which is basically Jeff Foxworthy joke set-ups and punchlines.  It was hilarious for an adult crowd aged 21-82 years.

Weekend was good.  Friday night was low-key which was perfect after a hectic week.  Saturday we drove about 2 hrs to meet friends for lunch.  We had a really nice visit and the weather was perfect for a drive.  Sunday was recliner church and then my Mom stopped over for lunch.  I made pasta e fagioli soup.  The Packers played the late afternoon game.  I had to leave at halftime for a volunteer gig but they lost.  DH's team played the Sunday night game and won.  DH made a rude comment as I was going to bed and it hit me hard.  I'm still upset about it today.  It'll be ok, but I hate that.  Maybe it's the election anxiety too.

Busy work week again this week.  I'll work onsite on Friday.  It's been rainy and I hope it warms up a bit so I can finish with the fall chores outside this week.  I need to take down the rain barrel and a few other things before a hard freeze.  Will also put out the Christmas lights but not turn them on yet.

Ha! Who knew there was a board game version. I think we must play the "parlor game" that Wikipedia tells me it's based on. I have a literal 1940s dictionary on my lap that I flip through!
  • Weekend was pretty good. We had a nice time with DD and family. We watched GS2's first basketball game Friday night - I forgot how hilarious it is to watch kids who haven't played an organized game (of any kind) before. There were a couple of girls on the opposite team that were the best players. I think one made 6 or 7 baskets! Saturday was swim lessons for GS3. We thought GS1 had a soccer game but we were wrong. Saturday night we watched the boys while DD and SIL went out with his parents to celebrate his and his father's birthdays. Sunday was church then we headed home.

Our new washer and dryer were delivered early in the morning so 8 loads of laundry later I'm done! I think I'm really going to like this new set. Top loader - no more front loader for me! I need to start planning for book club next week - I'm hosting so I need to do a couple of appetizers (others bring salads and desserts). I've also started thinking about holiday decorating.
IMO top loader is always the right choice.
  • We used to play Balderdash and it was so much fun.

Not a thanksgiving game, but for Christmas we did a game where the player gets blindfolded, you scatter bows across the table, give the player a bowl and a spatula, and then you give them X amount of time (I think we did a minute) to get as many bows in the bowl as possible while blindfolded. The absolute confidence people have as they scoop with literally nothing on the spatula is hilarious. Everyone liked it and even my dad was able to play while seated.

I could imagine a fun Thanksgiving game where everyone is blindfolded and you have like thirty seconds to draw a convincing Thanksgiving Turkey and then you vote on the best one.

Taboo is always a crowd pleaser. For the older and non-kid crowd, Cards Against Humanities. For the conservative crown, Apples to Apples can be fun. For a little bit of competition, there's a game called SkyJo which we play (and have played with my dad and grandparents). It's easy to pick up and follow.
