Election Tuesday

Hopeful and terrified all at the same time. How is everyone?

Re: Election Tuesday

  • I'm exhausted today. N was up briefly a couple times last night and i'm coming down with a cold. My niece and nephew both had horrible runny noses when they were over Sunday and i definitely caught whatever they have. G has an oncology checkup today and N had a very rough dropoff this morning without his brother there.

Filled out my ballot and need to drop off at lunch - there's a dropbox a few minutes away. Kind of glad i'm on marathon bedtime duty tonight so i wont' really see much election coverage. I don't think i'll be able to mentally/emotionally handle watching anything in real time.
  • If you're voting there's a decent chance Girl Scouts are selling cookies at polling places.   They're great for stress eating.

I'm scared and anxious and trying to be patient hoping that we have good news by the weekend but also pessimistic when I see how many people are voting for that Velveeta Voldemort.
  • Terrified and hopeful too.  I don’t have it in me to follow. T***p will declare victory either way.

Election day here is always a day off for students and a superintendent’s conference day for us.  Our school is a polling site and we were told last month that bc it’s  a presidential election, our PD would be remote, which is pretty sweet. I know for many who work remotely with frequency it’s of course a true work day.  But for me over here in comfy clothes, pushing laundry through, not needing a sitter for my kids, it feels like a day off. On my work friend group chat we’re all agreeing we wish we could do this one day a month.

Sending comforting vibes to all today, tomorrow (and hopefully not the next few years!) 🫶🏻
  • I love my little town, my polling station is pretty small and easy. In and out in 10 minutes. Which still surprised me because this year we’re supposed to have high turn out numbers.
I won’t be watching, i’m going to a friend’s place to plan some stuff for our upcoming girls trip. I hope it won’t take too too long. Rain all day too.
    @ei34 enjoy your day off!

  • I voted in-person this morning.  No line but a steady stream of folks.  DH and I decided we aren't watching the continuing coverage tonight.  We'll do a marathon of Law & Order or something.

I'm teaching today and have a nail appointment tonight.  Need to come up with something for dinner.

I couldn't fall asleep last night and was awake until 2:30 AM.  Finished my book and up about 1 AM to craft and confused the cat.  She's already a little mixed up due to the time change.

    Cold and rainy here today.

  • I am NOT a morning person.  But got up at the crack of dawn to vote before I went to work.  They changed my voting location a couple years ago and now it is within walking distance of me which was really nice.  That was why I didn't do early voting.  Those locations weren't nearly as convenient.  My H joined me for the walk and to vote.

The ballot in my voting booth wasn't working.  They were able to fix it by (I think) turning on a switch.  But I was there about 35 minutes after voting opened.  Ugh, it makes me wonder if anyone who had used that booth before me didn't have their votes count.

Overall though, I was in and out pretty quickly and that was great.  Expedience was the main reason I went this morning instead of waiting until after work. Not that my presidential vote matters (eyeroll) in the very non-swing state of Louisiana.  There was only one other office (House of Reps) to vote on.  My vote probably didn't matter for that either.  The incumbent is very popular.  He's a Democrat, but he sucks and I can't stand him.  I voted for the only other Democrat on the ballot.

I hate voting by party only.  It didn't used to be like that.  Politicians on both sides catered more to the middle.  I would vote for the person I felt was best for the job.  I still do that for local elections.  But for offices that affect the nation, I no longer have that luxury.  The right has become so extreme and almost everybody tows the party line, no matter how horrific a piece of legislation would be for the American people.

Okay, I'm off my soapbox now.  On to good news.

I'm going to an election watch party with my neighbor friend tonight.  It's at a local movie theatre only a couple miles from our street.  There is going to be live music, election themed games, and election themed trivia.  Sounds like fun and it will be good to get out and commiserate/celebrate with like-minded people.  At least I hope they are.  New Orleans the city, not the area, skews very blue.  Hopefully the Trumpsters living in the city will head out to the suburbs where they can be with their own kind, lol.

My big boss called me into his office this morning.  It's near my work anniversary and I'm getting about a 6% raise.  We talked about upcoming projects and how they would affect the steel department.  He gave specific thanks about the work I've been doing and passed along the client's appreciation.  We also talked about how things were going with my trainee (D).  Eeek!  I've been dreading this.

But I felt like the conversation went well.  I was able to keep it brief, summarized, and stuck to facts.  I talked about the positives first and how he helps me.  While also explaining he doesn't have the computer skills for this position and they haven't improved much.  I also gave a heads up that things are mostly caught up and I won't need any more help in the near future.  I feel like I didn't throw D under the bus too much.  BB and I decided it's best to keep him as a back-up for me and no one else needs to be trained at this time.  Less pressure/expectation that D can be "fully trained" and sets me up to have a future conversation for when I no longer need help.

  • Slate published a PRudie list of old Q's today "for anyone who needs a distraction" Happy to post them if it would be a welcome distraction for people!

  • I am teaching DD about the electoral college like it's my job! Also we figured out that the first presidential election DS1 will be able to vote in will be on his 21st birthday, so that's fun for him! Because of course all of these things will be the same and work the exact same way by then! That is the assumption we are working under!

Doing hopeful things like that is how I'm giving myself more hope. But I very much understand not being able to handle that. Prudie today sounds fun!
  • Chiquita won't turn 18 until December 2028 so the first presidential election she can vote in will be the same Chiquito votes in and he turns 18 two months earlier.
  • I'm trying to avoid social media/news stuff as much as possible. I trained at the Y this morning then walked with some book club friends. Unfortunately, they were 2 of the 3 people in our club who support Trump. The rest of us are dumbfounded because these are educated, kind and lovely people. We just don't get it.

I'm still doing laundry - changed our bed linens to fall/winter from spring/summer so that added 3 loads. I think I'm done now. H and I are going to the local bike shop to pick up a bike for GS3. It is for his birthday in April but thought we'd hit a sale. We are also taking GS2's bike seat in to get replaced. DD hit the bike with her van and bent the seat last spring/summer. I'm tired of watching the child sit on a cockeyed bike seat.

Grilled salmon for dinner tonight and I'm probably binging NCIS or something along those lines all day. May break out some bourbon at some point. Here's to  a great outcome for the election. I'm slightly hopeful but very anxious. I've always voted split ticket until the last election. Now it is Democratic all the way because I just don't trust any Republicans.
  • I'm with you @short+sassy.  I voted for two Rs at the local level because that's where they will remain and one is an incumbent who has a 100% voting record and has been incredibly responsive and compassionate.  I will not vote for any R at the federal level for the time being.

I saw a thread that said, optimistically nauseous and yeah, that.  I'm off at 1 and will walk to my polling station.  I'm a little nervous; when Pride rolled around we always had big trucks with TFG flags driving around the square yelling slurs when set up was starting.  We never had any violence, but my polling station is at the same place (within a block) and this being MO...I'm just being cautious and very aware of my surroundings.  Especially now that it's only 25 feet from the front door of the station for campaigning.  I can say I won't watch returns, but I will, I always do, and I'm going to be anxiously vibrating no matter what, so screw it.  I will have edibles and snacks though.  I'm also off tomorrow because no matter what happens, I am going to be exhausted from this trauma response I'm having (thanks 2016 and 1/6/2021).

Otherwise, SSDD.  Kept myself busy with work up to about 11:30 and am now just watching the clock like a hawk.  Will go visit a friend after voting, stop by someplace to buy copious candy and snacks, and then home with Harley.

ETA:  MO Dems have worked their arses off for the local elections and Amendment 3 (enshrining women's right to be healthy and access to medical care) here.  I have a secret hope to see a Dem governor again.

  • @levioosa I'm glad there's some movement on both the professional and personal health for you, finally!
  • I ran the NYC MARATHON (on Sunday but I was driving yesterday). It was amazing. And hard.

As your friendly, former political scientist- no results tonight don’t mean there’s a problem it just means things are too close to call, which is what we expect. Things to watch are obviously PA, NC, WI, GA, NV, and AZ. Likely more early voting than 2020 so where we have early voting we might see results early.
    Ahhh that's amazing! Congrats!

  • @flantastic, 30 years ago I was in college and took a public speaking class.  I gave a speech about why the electoral college was outdated, stupid, dangerous, and made people less likely to vote.

At the time, there had only been one election (Harrison) in US history where the popular vote was different from the electoral vote.  And another very weirdo situation where Tilden won both the popular vote AND the electoral vote, but was one electoral shy to clinch it.  His opponent Hayes (R) disputed 20 of the electoral votes and they were subsequently awarded to him by a Federal Electoral Commission that was thrown together because no one knew what to do in this situation*.

But both of those elections were in the 1800s with minor presidents that most Americans have barely heard of.

I predicted that if it happened again in modern times there would finally be a call to get rid of the electoral college.  I was SO wrong, smh.

In the meantime, only people in swing states or potential swing states have presidential votes that matter.

There are also NO Federal law the electors have to vote the way their state wants them to.  37 states have laws against it.  But THIRTEEN don't!  JFC.  How long is it going to be before some mega-rich guy like Elon Musk buys off some of the electors to vote the way he wants.  Perhaps it already happened in earlier times when people did not have the quick results and media to see what is happening.

*Historians now believe there was a backroom deal. The Democrats, whose stronghold was the South, agreed to let Hayes be president in return for the Republicans promising to pull all federal troops from former Confederate states.  "Reconstruction" did suddenly end the next year (1877).  Coincidence?  Doubtful.

  • short+sassy I could tell that the 9yo was basically like, "That's a stupid way to do it. Why don't we just, like, count the votes."
  • So excited for you @charlotte989875!!!! Congratulations!
  • @ei34, hmmm.  I wonder if schools are closed today in my area, as well.  Traffic was extremely light this morning.

@levioosa, good luck with your transfer request.  Sorry to hear about the kitty's dental problems.  Oof!  And I thought the expense for dental work for humans was bad.

@VarunaTT, Like MO, Louisiana is a very red state.  Arguably redder, unless you are talking about just the city of Branson, MO lol.  But we have frequently had Dem governors in the time I have lived here.  There is hope!

Though our last Dem governor was anti-abortion and anti-legalizing marijuana even for medical purposes.  So there's that.  He rationalized his marijuana stance because "aw shucks" his daddy was sheriff of the small Louisiana town he grew up in and had worked hard in the war against drugs.

Sometimes kids are the best at simple wisdoms!

If his elementary school classes were anything like mine were, we voted on things that affected the whole class by raising our hands.  The most hands raised wins.

  • Got busy with work but will post a few old prudie's that were up today!

@charlotte989875 way to go! NYC marathon is a huge accomplishment :)
  • I was trying to remember that the 2020 election was free and fair and it was 4 days before we knew who won.  I'm going to try to be patient and watch anything but the returns.
