I dislike my dress

A few  months ago I bought a dress online for 150 $, I liked it. Now I had I tailored for 80$and I hate it. Not because of the tailoring. The lady who did it, was amazing. But how I look. I look old and fat. It looks conservative and nightgown-ish.
I went to a salon once with my BFF (she lives on another continent) and I hated the experience. Sales rep was no help. I felt old (I'm 41) and all the dresses were heavy.
My wedding is next year. I have issues spending a lot of money for my dress, but now I'm thinking Its the only way. I don't have close friends or family to go shopping with. I'm exhausted.
I guess I just needed to vent. I'm lost.

Re: I dislike my dress

  • Did you put it on with all the shapewear and accessories you're planning on? It might give you a different impression if it's the whole vision.

What makes it conservative-looking? Some sleeves you could shorten? A high neckline you could reshape? Some odd beading that can be cut away? All is not lost, and you are certainly not old. Sketch out some ideas and see if there's anything you can have done to make you like it again.
  • I agree with the suggestion to try it on with all your accessories, but if you still dislike it after that, you're only out $240. While that is a lot for a regular dress, it really isn't much for a wedding dress. If you can afford to spend more, get something you like.
  • This is my dress. I am not used to wearing long dresses, even long skirts. I can see my underwear and my tummy. I hate how boring I look in this dress. I just dont feel pretty.
  • I think you look great, babe! Try a longline shapewear or slip to smooth out those lines. A beaded belt and a nice necklace might brighten it up a bit for you.
  • Thx. I ordered shapewear today hoping it would help. I hope it does. Otherwise I will sell this one and get something new.
  • Thx. I wish I felt like that.... :-(
  • If you don't feel amazing, just sell the dress. Don't bother with the shape wear. I agree with you that you could do better. It's not bad, it just doesn't feel special.
  • 1000% what @maine7mob said!!!  Your posture says it all in your pics!  IMO - and IMO only - your dress is missing the umpf factor.  It's like they started sewing the dress and didn't finish the embellishments/appliques/lacing work.  Something isn't quite right with it!

FWIW - you went to a shop that wasn't the right shop for you - you have a gorgeous body, but that dress isn't highlighting nor enhancing it and shapewear isn't going to change that because your body really doesn't look like it needs it as it's a dress issue not a you issue!  Nothing says you have to have a floor length dress either!  Try on some shorter dresses if you're going to be more comfortable!  Macy's, Nordstrom's, Bloomingdales all have wedding type dresses with a very strict return policy, but a return policy nonetheless.  Some (like Nordstroms) even have a bridal salon in-store with a personal shopper as an option as well.
  • I decided to visit another bridal shop and I found my dress. I love everything about it. How I feel and how I look. It makes my body look amazing. I also got a really good price. Thank you all for your input. It really helped to see things from the outside. So excited now for the big day!
  • FWIW I think that second dress is great!

*Squee!!!!  Glad you found the right dress FOR YOU!!!!!!  And yes - that dress looks AMAZING on you!!!!!!!
  • I’m really sorry you're feeling this way—it sounds tough, especially with everything going on. It's understandable to want to feel good in your dress, and it's frustrating when things don't go as planned. A lot of people feel the same way when it comes to wedding dress shopping. Have you looked into JJsHouse? They offer a wide range of affordable options, and they have great reviews from people who have had positive experiences with both the dresses and customer service. It might be worth checking out some of their styles to see if anything speaks to you. You deserve to feel beautiful on your special day!

  • I think that jewelry can make a difference to the look.  I got a cheaper one too and I was so happy with it. I do have issue spending thousands of dollars on a dress. I got this one from Celestial Bridal for $39999

  • And I like your dress
