LET GO

Dear Prudence,

I hate my son’s girlfriend of 13 years. They are high school sweethearts who are now 30 and talking about buying property and eventually starting a family together. He currently lives at home and helps pay my mortgage, among other things. If he leaves, I will be forced to sell the house and adjust to a new lifestyle. I feel she will keep me away from my son when they move out. I have tried everything to split them apart and often make her feel unwelcome in my home and talk about her negatively to almost anyone who will listen. I even make her bring her own food when she stays here. Why can’t she just get the point that no one wants her here and move on!? What else can I do to get rid of her?

Re: LET GO

  • It's been 13 years and you don't get it?

What can you do?  You raised a grown man who is capable of making his own decisions.  It's time to start treating him and the people he associates with respect or the garbage will take itself out.
  • WTF is wrong with you?

Go marry Toby Keith or something and let your son have his life.
  • Yikes! You sound awful. And with a decade + to figure out your finances/supporting yourself.
  • Wow, you're a horrible human being.

    Well…. Someone wants her there…

  • God I hope this dude moves out, buys a home with the saved money on rent and then immediately goes no-contact. However I do feel bad for gf. I really hope he has been standing up to monster in law or else she deserves better.

  • I have news for you, LW.  I'm sure the feeling is mutual.  You're lucky you tied your apron strings so tightly around him that he's been living in this state of arrested development for so long.

But the luckiest one is him.  Few women would waste 13 years...and especially those key years in their 20s when people are establishing their lives...on some loser who hasn't been ready to marry, have children, and/or buy a house with them until recently.  While their b/f's mom blatantly treats them as horribly as possible and is proud of it.
