Wedding Woes

Fri-yay

Glad it's the end of this week.  Ready for a break.

Not too much going on this weekend.  I have a friend who wants me to come over and watch Agatha All Along, but I'm just not interested.  I've got some new books from the library to read and movies to watch.  Sunday I'll go see Mom.  We have to go get her oil changed and all of the fluids checked.  One of her paranoias is taking care of her car and it's just easier to go along with it than to keep trying to point out this level of maintenance is unnecessary.  It doesn't hurt anything and is fairly mild on ability to take care of, so I just do it.  The mechanic will always say, "You're not due for this yet" and I'll say, "I know" and we both just go about the business.

Anyone have any good plans?

Re: Fri-yay

  • I can't decide if I'm tempted to watch Agatha All Along or not, but I'm erring towards "meh."

I'm sorry to hear about your health stuff @CharmedPam

Back at work today. It's benefits enrollment and some of it is as clear as mud. I loathe looking through the health plans every year. It feels insane. Otherwise, not too much else is happening today. I had my laser hair removal session yesterday. It's so quick it feels dumb to pay so much. But I'm pretty happy with the results overall. There are just a few stubborn areas left. H and I got lunch afterwards and then explored a new park (to us) nearby which was nice.

I can't believe Thanksgiving is around the corner. I am honestly not feeling too excited about it this year. But I did make a meal plan for it and sent that over to SIL so she could talk to the rest of the family about contributing 1-2 items. MIL is obsessing about the turkey, so she can make that, but I'll still be doing the bulk of the cooking with most of the sides. I always wish I had the day off before too, but it's okay. I'll just have to do my shopping the Monday before.

Otherwise, just trying to keep the existential dread at bay. So this is my current vibe.

  • I've always thought that too @levioosa, the day before Thanksgiving would be a nice day to be off.
Your mom is lucky to have you help with the car stuff @VarunaTT, especially if it eases anxiety for her.

Nice weekend ahead.  I booked passes for the zoo tomorrow, not sure if we'll go but leaning towards it.  I have brunch with friends on Sunday.  It's the group that I've taken a (9 month) break from dining with, since they're the split the bill evenly folks.  I see them in other settings but have missed the conversation that flows at brunch (and they're all disgusted by the election results too, which is nice to be around right now, so I'm planning to just bite the bullet and prepared to pay $70 for an $8 glass of Pinot grigio and $13 meal).  Kids and I are off on Monday for Veteran's Day, it's shaping up to be an errands/cooking day.
  • I am taking humor where I can find it as I'm reading up on what our soon-to-be new "leaders" are saying.

I was reading one of RFK's social media posts about wanting to emphasize health alternatives that the FDA suppresses because they can't be patented by Pharma.

I found a GEM that brought me so much laughter and joy at how much the Republican party is going to be questioning their choice with this guy.  But first, my serious thoughts.

Reading his list was much more of a roller coaster ride than I was expecting.  NGL, I was surprised to find I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agreed with some items and have been wishing for some of them, for years.  With the major caveat of "under regulation".  For example, looking at the chemicals we use in our foods and to fertilize them. Especially the ones already banned in most/all other developed countries.

But then the next item would be, "WTF are you talking about?!?!  There is mountains of scientific evidence you're wrong."  Removing fluoride from public water systems and making it legal to buy/sell raw milk again are the two that first come to mind, but there were others.

Now the gem.  Promoting stem cell research.

GASP!!!!!  "Sir!  Have you FORGOTTEN yourself and the party you represent?"

Some of you might be too young to remember this, but stem cell research was a relatively new and burgeoning field of research during the George Bush Sr. years.  It had so much promise...as it turns out, for very good reasons...to help countless diseases.  But the best stem cells because they were the most "blank slate" and flexible came from fetus material.

It was a major controversial topic that got a lot of press for a long time.  The Republican party was vehemently opposed to it and having absolute conniption fits because it "promotes abortion".  As if any woman anywhere facing an unwanted pregnancy is factoring in stem cell research with her decision.

"We are the Pro-Life Party!  How DARE you suggest we allow fetus material to be used for research in saving people's lives."

I may not be remembering all of this perfectly, but this was the gist.  In the end, Pres. Bush brought stem cell research almost to a halt during his tenure.  This was how he did it.  A lot of medical research is governmentally funded.  But any lab doing this kind of research would be cut off from any federal funds.  For ALL their different studies.

On a totally different subject, but exactly the same tactic.  The Federal Government decided it was best for the drinking age to be raised to 21.  But that is 100% and with no question a state's decision.  Not theirs.  But no worries.  They sent a notice to all the states.  "If your drinking age is below 21 on X date, all federal highway funds will be cut until it is 21."

  • The 21 driving age thing is why Florida has a turnpike. Spring breakers were big money for Florida back then.

I'm hoping for a relatively relaxed weekend, but still trying to keep myself distracted. We're making cocktails and watching a movie tonight. Long run in the park tomorrow and then our soccer team has a do or die playoff game tomorrow night. Sunday I'm thinking of heading up to the mountains to do a long hike.

I wanted to make a big pot of soup, but it's hot again here. Well, warm but now humid. I feel like I'm getting cheated out of autumn this year. It's going to stay hot and then be winter in 2 weeks.

I think Louisiana was the last hold out for some of the same reason.

They said, "No.  We don't want to do that.  You shouldn't be trying to force us.  We'll lose a lot of revenue if we lower the drinking age, so that will offset some of the cut."

They went for about a year without those federal funds!  But finally had to cave.
